Michele Bachmann: ‘If Anyone Will Not Work, Neither Should He Eat’

GOP presidential candidate Michele Bachmann promised to significantly lower funding to social safety net programs during a speech at the Family Research Council this morning, going so far as to suggest that people who can’t work should not eat. “Our nation needs to stop doing for people what they can and should do for themselves,” she said. “Self reliance means, if anyone will not work, neither should he eat.”

I’m going assume that Igor isn’t fluent in English and doesn’t understand the difference between “will not” and “can’t,” because otherwise he is being willfully dishonest.

Personally I don’t have a problem with letting an able-bodied person who refuses to work (without good cause) miss a few meals. The social safety nets are for people who either can’t work or who can’t find work.

BTW – This is not an endorsement of Michele Bachmann

  1. It’s the other Michelle who doesn’t want people to eat unapproved foods.

  2. I really would like to see a woman president before I die, but this lady is not it. She does not seem to have the ideas or know how to solve many of the problems this country is facing now.
Sarah and Hillary understood and if they did not have the answer, they knew where to look for it. They were smart enough that they would appoint the best people for the job.
Michelle does not give me the same feeling of confidence

  3. Somewhere between FDR and today the Democrats became to welfare what the NRA is to guns. They have zealously opposed reasonable, common-sense requirements for welfare eligibility like drug testing, lifetime limits, job training and fraud investigation the way the NRA opposes bans on assault weapons.

I don’t think it’s illiberal to make a distinction between the needy and the lazy.

    • I agree with you about the requirements to get welfare. There should be all the things you say.
Welfare is supposed to be a short term help when needed due to forces beyond your control, such as sickness, job loss and such.
At one time there was a sense of shame about being on welfare ,and you wanted to get off it. Now people seem to think they are owed welfare

Cain “4th Accuser” press conference // Update – alleges sexual advance after termination of employment

Summary of press conference: Woman alleges that in 1997 after her employment terminated with a National Restaurant Association affiliate, Cain made a single sexual advance at her which she rebuffed and which he stopped after she said no. So the allegation is not one of workplace “sexual harassment” but of an alleged attempt at infidelity.

    • And by sexual advance, she may have meant he said he liked her shoes. Which is of course code for let’s do the nasty.

Who knows. Who cares. They’re coming out of the woodwork now.

      • It looks like Paula Jones all over again so far to me. Sorry, but if you said NOTHING at the time, and conveniently make a stink 13 years later when there is publicity and political gain to be had, I kind of doubt your story.

    • Gloria Allred is involved in this one. That alone should be a huge red (heh) flag. She has a long history of taking poor and middle class women and using them as pawns in her game against Republicans, all of which makes he money–mostly from the Democratic party.

I personally hate her and hope she soon suffers a Russert because someone needs to stop the damage she does to women and their issues. She has wasted so much credibility for other women with her stupid fucking games. She’s the feminist equivalent of a Snake Oil Salesman.

  5. Igor is culturally illiterate. It’s a commonly quoted biblical reference. And considering that the Bible is laced all throughout our history and culture in this country, no American, regardless of religion or rejection thereof, should be ignorant of it. It’s like living in Greece and being ignorant of Plato and Aristotle.

From Paul’s second letter to the Thessalonians:

3:7 For you know how you ought to imitate us. For we didn’t behave ourselves rebelliously among you,

    3:8 neither did we eat bread from anyone’s hand without paying for it, but in labor and travail worked night and day, that we might not burden any of you;

3:9 not because we don’t have the right, but to make ourselves an example to you, that you should imitate us.

3:10 For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: “If anyone will not work, neither let him eat.”

3:11 For we hear of some who walk among you in rebellion, who don’t work at all, but are busybodies.

Background: The early church (and Jesus himself) were famous for ministering to the sick and the poor, and giving freely. Paul rightly points out here that that is not a license to sit on your ass and demand that others have an obligation to feed you.

    • Little known fact – the early church was basically communist.

      • It had to be to survive. But notice how as soon as they got the chance they dumped that shit and went all out for power and gold.

        • That happened about 300 years later, when Constantine called the Council of Nicene, ALL MEN, of course.

Early church was quite communal, sharing, working together, looking out for each other.

        • Paul’s message was about being willing to work in that community, no slackers—-do your part.

      • Communism is only possible in a like-minded, voluntary community. It doesn’t work so well when forced involuntarily at the point of a gun – which is what government essentially is.

Which is probably why Jesus said “YOU feed the poor”, not “you should force your neighbor to feed the poor.”

I attended a couple of churches that were very communist, though they didn’t call it that. No one ever went without, or had a problem that wasn’t taken care of. No one. We did everything from meals to car repairs to paying utilities to loans to building entire houses for one another. I never paid for a babysitter in my life. It’s not uncommon, even in the modern day church. And it’s all voluntary. It only works if it is.

The gospels have bupkus to say about making other people do a damn thing. As a matter of fact, Jesus generally frowned upon people being overly concerned about what someone else was or wasn’t doing. Christianity (the real kind) is much harder than communism. Because it’s all about you, not your neighbor, not the govt, not other people. YOU.

      • no kidding?

        • The accurate term would probably be “communalist.”

And the congregation of those who believed were of one heart and soul; and not one of them claimed that anything belonging to him was his own; but all things were common property to them. And with great power the apostles were giving witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and abundant grace was upon them all. For there was not a needy person among them, for all who were owners of land or houses would sell them and bring the proceeds of the sales, and lay them at the apostles’ feet; and they would be distributed to each, as any had need. – Acts 4:32-35

  6. OT: Palin just tweeted this (speech from Mark LevinI think from that AFP conf that got harassed by OWS)

  7. GUILTY IN JACKSON TRIAL

    • Guilty of doctoring while black. Damn.

    • GO DIRECTLY TO JAIL UNTIL SENTENCE DECIDED ON NOV 29

    • Michael Jackson: Guilty of doctor shopping, multiple drug sources, without telling doctors what the other doctors were giving him. Money talks.

    • I’m surprised. I thought for sure he’d be acquitted. I didnt follow the trial closely, at all, but the whole situation seemed pretty damn murky.

      • I don’t follow sensational cases anymore – not since the first OJ trial

Strangely, I don’t feel like I’m missing anything.

      • I never thought he’d be acquitted from the moment I found out that the drug he’d been giving Jackson was Propofol.

My husband uses it every day for his intensive care unit patients on ventilators, so that they stay basically paralyzed and don’t even try to breath on their own (which interferes with what the ventilator is trying to do). IOW, the whole point of the drug is to make you stop breathing and not fight the ventilator. You would never, ever, EVER use that drug outside of an OR or ICU setting. There is not the slightest medical justification for doing so. NONE. It’s beyond medical negligence, it is criminally reckless.

  8. OT looks like over at TC she is shopping for traffic..slagging off miq and crawdad hole again… all she seems to do these days is whine and whine about herself…what a primadonna

thank god you guys are here. keeping it real

    • She’s becoming assimilated into the Borg.

      • It’s sad. I don’t know why she cares so much about people she vehemently disagrees with. She should just go find an actual Tea Party website to take her irrational rage out on.

On the upside, I do so enjoy watching her go through the stages of unemployment.

    • I saw NYS blaming sexual assaults at OWS on Giuliani. She really hates that guy.

      • I fail to see how Rrrrruuuudy could possibly have made a bunch of dudebros fondle and harass and rape women. But “because I hate him/her and he/she is BAD” seems to be all the evidence needed anymore.

      • She hates everybody lately.

I drop by every now and then with a reality check.

      • I go back to the DU daze with NYS. She’s okay, but I thought she was deeper than superficial anti crap. Taking a break from posting on her blog since she allows personal attacks. Especially against one’s family. I tried to throw water on the ALL police are pigs by relating my son’s experiences with Code Pink. (He’s a fed). I thought I was being funny, but one of her commenters pronouced him “part of the Gestapo”. Yuck.

        .

        • I too was surprised at her. The attack on you is what started me off (not that I think you can’t defend yourself) and the lame excuse for allowing it pushed me around the bend. Since then, I’ll take a swipe at a commenter every now and then, but for the most part I believe she will return to her right mind soon enough

Hopefully, I’ll be over it in a while……

    • I had a new post notification from Days’, read it in email too. No longer here? It has a pingback on RD’s blog too.

It was a nice response to the RD blah-blah-blah.

Guess when you hit publish, the emails and pingbacks are forever :)

  9. More comprehension problems? The headline to this article…..

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/11/07/herman-cain-gloria-allred-sharon-bialek-twitter_n_1080208.html

This is a mocking tweet? I thought it was funny, then I do do like Cain more than Allred because she exploits women for all the wrong reasons. Also tells me a lot about her “victims”, will no reputable attorney represent them?

“Welcome to the campaign, what took you so long?”

  10. Work “feeds” you in more than one way. Disabled people should be supported in employment as much as possible because they deserve to be part of the community, to have a feeling of accomplishment and belonging. Work is not all drudgery, it’s how you engage with the rest of the world.
