Announcing The Carbonite Accountability Project

On Saturday, March 3, 2012, Carbonite announced that it was dropping its advertising on the Rush Limbaugh Show even after Limbaugh had apologized to Sandra Fluke for certain comments made regarding Ms. Fluke.

When the controversy originally broke, Carbonite took a principled stand that its advertising was not an endorsement of a particular talk show host’s views, and that it was not political

This blog and many others have called attention to the fact that Carbonite’s advertising policy is not consistently applied.

Carbonite continues to advertise on the Ed Schultz Show, despite Mr. Schultz’s long history of verbal attacks on the Tea Party movement and conservatives, including calling conservative radio talk show host Laura Ingraham a “slut,” for which Mr. Schultz later apologized.

Given Carbonite’s very public announcement, it is appropriate to keep track of whether Carbonite is living up to its own standards.

A special Focus Page has been created as a place at which readers can post information and links documenting whether Carbonite is advertising on programs and venues (including websites) which have engaged in personal attacks or uncivilized discourse.

This is a sunshine project, not a boycott.

The technical term for that last little bit is “bullshit.” They are trying to punish Carbonite for dropping Rush Limbaugh (and to threaten other advertisers who are contemplating doing the same).

This is not about fairness or double standards. This isn’t about religious freedom. It’s really not even about defending Rush Limbaugh’s right to call women “sluts” and “prostitutes.”

It’s tribalism.

I mean seriously – this is the second decade of the 21st Century. The Pill is as old as I am and I turn 52 next month. We’re supposed to believe that all these people are shocked to discover that single women in their twenties and thirties are sexually active?

The right wing only gives a shit about sexism and misogyny when right-wing women are the targets. To be fair, the left wing only cares about sexism and misogyny when left wing women are targeted the right wing targets left wing women.

The only real difference between Rush Limbaugh and Bill Maher is which side they’re on. They’re both scumbags.

The myth of free birth control

If you’re a wingnut and your knowledge of Sandra Fluke comes from the right wing noise machine, you undoubtedly think that she was demanding that she and other students be provided with free birth control by the government, or by the Catholic Church, or perhaps by some terrifying chimera of the two. (I’m picturing the body of Darrell Issa with the Pope’s head on top.)

Here’s the real situation: Georgetown students buy their healthcare coverage through the University’s student health plan. It’s just like an employee health insurance plan, but for students. In fact, students at Georgetown, as at many universities, are required to carry this insurance (or prove that they have coverage elsewhere). The premiums run something like $1900 a year. And yet, even though female students are paying for their own health insurance, their birth control prescriptions aren’t included. That’s because Georgetown specifically excludes women’s contraceptive pills from the prescription plan, on account of the fact that the Catholic Church hates women. So female students have to buy health insurance plus pay for their ladyparts prescriptions out of pocket. Even if they have a serious disease that requires the pill as treatment.

Interestingly, the Georgetown employee healthcare plan does include birth control, because the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission would rain hell on their ass otherwise. That’s because of the EEOC ruling from 12 years ago that birth control is normal healthcare and that excluding it from an employee’s prescription plan constitutes sexist discrimination.*

And that’s what this is about: sexist discrimination. The women students at Georgetown are buying insurance to cover their healthcare needs, and yet they’re being discriminated against—denied basic modern medicine that is an integral part of women’s health—simply because they’re women.

The misinformation (lies) about what Sandra Fluke said is incredible. The wingnuts keeps claiming that Fluke wants taxpayers to pay her to have sex ten times a day. If you refer them the the actual transcript of her testimony they ignore it.
