Sharpton breaks promise to Trayvon supporters, fails to show up in Sanford for Easter ‘Occupation’

On Easter Sunday the Rev. Al Sharpton, an MSNBC host, broke a major promise he made to those supporting him and the family of slain teenager Trayvon Martin: He didn’t show up in Sanford, Fla., to “occupy” the town.

On March 26 Sharpton vowed to “occupy” Sanford over Easter weekend to show support for Trayvon, the 17-year-old black teen who was shot by Hispanic neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman on Feb. 26.

“We’re going to have a full blown occupation of Sanford with tents and everything over Easter weekend until [authorities] either arrest George Zimmerman, or arrest us for praying for his arrest,” Sharpton told ABC News about two weeks before Easter.

On Easter weekend, however, Sharpton is nowhere to be found in the central Florida town. Instead, according to his Twitter feed, he’s in Harlem.

[...]

It’s unclear why Sharpton chose to abandon supporters of calls for “Justice for Trayvon.” Neither National Action Network spokeswoman Rachel Noerdlinger nor MSNBC spokesman Jeremy Gaines responded to The Daily Caller’s requests for comment on why he broke his promise.

The reason may be related to recent disclosures about the Martin shooting — facts which have not mirrored the point of view presented by Sharpton and his allies. Since Sharpton first promised he would occupy Sanford over Easter weekend, several elements of his favored storyline have fallen apart.

UPDATE:

In emails to TheDC on Sunday, National Action Network spokeswoman Rachel Noerdlinger claimed Sharpton publicly announced last weekend that his Easter plans had changed. She was unable, however, to provide any evidence to support that claim. CNN did report that Sharpton held a press conference last weekend, during which he rebutted reports that he would organize a boycott of Sanford, Fla. businesses. Neither Noerdlinger nor TheDC, however, could find evidence that Sharpton reconsidered his promise of “a full blown occupation of Sanford with tents and everything over Easter weekend.”

Reverend Sharpton has been involved in enough racial (and racialized) incidents to smell a loser. He pumped this case for everything it was worth, now he’s getting out while the getting is good.

His employer appears to be backing away from the case as well.

  1. “He pumped this case for everything it was worth,”

    Small quibble. You misspelled “pimped”.

  2. Interesting. Found out something I wasn’t aware of, too. I knew that Zimmerman had advocated for the investigation and discipline of the officers involved in the earlier beating of the black homeless man.

What I didn’t know, but the article mentions, is that 2 of the cops Z tried to have disciplined were also arresting officers in his case.

So it appears that the arresting officers were no big friends to Zimmerman. Perhaps that means that the circumstances and his injuries were clear enough that they knew a self-defense claim was legit. Why would cops he’d tried to have disciplined lie and cover up on his behalf?

    • Racial solidarity?

      • Don’t know the races involved. One possibility is that since Zimmerman had tried to get 2 of the cops on his case disciplined, they leaned toward accepting his (entirely plausible) self-defense scenario lest they be accused of going after him in revenge.

    • That is interesting. I had not heard that. It’s certainly something to think about.

    • Street cops do not decide if someone is to be charged with crimes related to a shooting death. They did not make the decision not to charge Zimmerman at the time. That decision was made by the state’s attorney over the objections of the investigating officer who recommended a manslaughter charge.

  3. Heh! Someone was (almost) able to vote with no ID, using……. Eric Holder’s name and address.

    http://www.nationalreview.com/articles/295431/why-we-need-voter-id-laws-now-john-fund

    • Some states with voter ID laws waive the fee for those claiming they can’t afford to pay it. So how difficult is it really to get a photo ID these days? Even those born at home have probably had to get a delayed birth certificate in order to be claimed as a dependent, get a job, apply for medicaid, SS and medicare benefits.

My husband was born at home and got a delayed birth certificate in order to get a work permit when he was a teenager. The family bible was cited as having the record of his birth. The midwife was paid two jars of PickleLilly.

  4. The “pumping” of this story went way back. NBC is trying to sweep it under the rug with the “firing” of an anonymous employee who is probably sitting at work as I type. You have legal troubles if you fire someone for doing what you told them to do. The editing “problem” seems to go back to the local NBC station on March 19. Then there is the problematic “And don’t be fooled by the April 2 dateline at the top – the dateline at the bottom is Mar 19 and the Jay Carney “we here in the White House are aware of the incident” quote is from Mar 19.”

The White House was possibly aware of the incident and the bad editing it appears. Then it all works its way up the NBC chain from local to network to MSNBC. This is the kind of crap they learned from Rove only they did not cover their tracks and remember that scumbags like Rove did it first and could figure it out. Idiots. http://justoneminute.typepad.com/main/2012/04/the-bs-runs-deep-at-msnbc.html

    • Why would Jay Carney talk to a local NBC station? Why would they call him for a quote? Carney gave a response to get the ball rolling, to inflame, and to give legitimacy to the story with the “edit”.

      • It gets worser and worser.

“So the blatant, racially charged distortion of George Zimmerman’s 911 call started on NBC 6 Miami on March 19, appearing in two articles by three different writers. It was repeated on March 20 in an article attributed to one of the three writers. The articles have been updated, but the quotes remain. The mis-quote aired on the Today Show on March 22 during a live segment with reporter Lilia Luciano, and again on March 27 with reporter Ron Allen.

  5. Tawana, Duke Lacrosse, GZ ? The Rev. Al is quite the little sh*t stirrer isn’t he?

    • And someone here make a caustic comment in response to my invocation of Tawana Brawley here very early on in this case. Oh nevermind, it was Ralph.

      • Poor Ralph. He’s a nice guy. I keep hoping he’ll wake up at some point re: OWS, the Trayvon case, etc, and say, “God Dammit! I cannot believe I let my guard down and fell for the manipulations again!”

The problem with the media and the left’s manipulations is that they knowingly prey on good people’s desire for justice, and change. And it’s hard for good people to remain guardedly cynical at all times. It’s not their nature.

        • I could agree with that before Ralph started calling me names on my Facebook page, and I had to ban him. I can understand the slow slide back to comfortable thinking, but that behavior has got to go. I won’t tolerate it, anyway. I’m happy to give any ideas a fair hearing, but civility matters. We won’t restore it until we demand it.

        • Ralph changed when he started going to OWS rallies.

          Koolaid is a helluva drug.

  7. LMAO! Ace rags on Obama’s 2012 white frat boyz campaign staff – where are the black and hispanic people? I only see a few women. Where’s the diversity?

The pic alone is worth the click:

    • One thing I was musing on this morning: It would be, of course, ludicrous to say that the Democratic party is all white. There is obviously tons of black and hispanic support.

But what struck me this morning was the pictorial record that I can recall. While the Dems have lots of blacks and latinos, one most often sees pictures of those groups separately. IOW, if there is an event aimed at “black voters”, you will see a sea of black faces, with a few other races sprinkled in. You will see a rally that is mostly Hispanic. Or you see pics like the one in that Ace piece – a mostly white group with one or two minorities.

What you do not see very often is a truly mixed group. It’s almost as if the whole thing is very segregated on the D side. With that many minorities in the party, why are there not more pictures floating around of Dem campaign offices, events, etc, where the races are all mingled together?

I will say this for the R’s – while they do not have as many minorities in their party, the ones who are there aren’t usually seen in a separate group. You see in the teaparty pics, the R events, whatever, that everyone is all mixed together. The minorities aren’t all concentrated in “their own” interest group.

Not sure what that means, if anything, but I’m pondering it this morning.

      • Whenever Obama gives a campaign speech with people seated behind him, those people aren’t VIPs or warm-up speakers. They are hand-picked from the audience to show diversity.

  8. Some black people on Twitter are going off on the whole NBP recording thing:

    • Could this be a switcheroo? This is not that big of a town and are they concerned that the courthouse is being watched and possible leaking of who is on the grand jury? Could they change mind again and put before the GJ when no one is watching or impanel a second one and dismiss the current one? Just saying.

  9. here part of the al sharpton saga that is rarely mentioned

al sharpton and freddies furniture store
people remember the false rape story but this one is never talked about

    • It could also mean that the SP wants to keep her cards close. She said last week that a grand jury may not be necessary.

      • What I’m reading now is that it looks like there won’t be capital charges as a GJ is required for those. Folks are guessing that GZ will be charged with manslaughter. (IANAL so take my comments with a grain of salt.)

  10. I didn’t know myiq was at the GSA conference ? :P
