The Band’s Levon Helm dead at 71

Levon Helm, the Arkansas-born drummer and southern-nuanced singer of The Band who also acted in movies, died of cancer Thursday at the age of 71.

Helm’s family announced Tuesday that the musician, who was diagnosed with throat cancer in 1998, was “in the final stages of his battle with cancer” and asked for fans’ prayers “as he makes his way through this part of his journey.”

Helm died Thursday afternoon at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, according to Larry Campbell, Helm’s longtime guitarist and band leader.

“As sad as this was, it was very peaceful,” he said.

The shitty part about getting old is seeing people die. Well, some people anyway.

If the rule of three works, Dick Clark is first and Levon second. Who will be the third?

      Don’t tell myiq2xu but I have no idea who Levon Helm’s was and I have never heard of the band, BUT Barneby’s death that is another story. My older sisters and I also ran home from school to watch, but I always found it too scary and took the opportunity to have my mom all to myself.

        The Band were Bob Dylan’s band at one time. Not sure how long. Anyway, I’m sure you know some of their songs but you might not realize it. I think the Weight might be their best known song although I’m sure others would disagree. Anyway, Levon Helm was their drummer and he sang some songs too. .

      My big, 85 lbs. rottie-mix (a rescue) has traveled many times in a carrier overseas in the hull of a plane and, when we were evacuating for Katrina, in the bed of a truck (she didn’t even have a special windshield thingy and that trip did take almost 12 hours with traffic). This is a dog I found as a 6 month old puppy on the side of the road, beat up & bleeding & paid to get her well –including heart worm treatment, which cost me mega bucks including 2 weeks of boarding at the vet’s kennel because the condo I was living in at the time was on the second floor & she wasn’t supposed to climb stairs while undergoing the treatment. She was supposed to stay 4 weeks in the kennel (for the entire course of the treatment), but after 2 weeks there the vet told me I had to take her home because she was getting so anxious in the kennel, not sleeping, eating, pacing back & forth, etc. She’s never once complained about going in her carrier, however. I am sick of people characterizing a dog in a carrier as being “trapped.” If it is the right size carrier (i.e, the dog can turn around in it) then it isn’t “trapped” and it isn’t “torture.” Most dogs, if crated as a puppy, find their carrier very comforting. Mine sleeps in hers.

      It really is nice. The area and the water is absolutely gorgeous. As kids we got to go on base from time to time since dad was in the military. At the end of the day seeing the entire base stop and honor the flag was always interesting/inspiring as well.
