A father has told how he managed to escape the Dark Knight Rises shooting – but was horrified to realise he had lost his four-month old son on the floor of the theatre in the chaos.
The infant was rescued by his mother who had a shrapnel wound to her leg but still managed to drag the child and their four-year-old daughter to safety.
Jamie Rohrs and Patricia Legarreta took their infant son Ethan and four-year-old daughter to the midnight screening in Aurora, Colorado, thinking the children would sleep through the movie as they sat on the second floor balcony.
When gunman James Holmes burst in and began shooting Ms Legaretta heard her fiance shout at her to get down on the floor.
She was then hit in the leg and fell to the floor herself.
Rohrs jumped over the seat with their baby son and says he considered playing dead.
‘I’m trying to keep him low. And he’s crying,’ he told ABC News . ‘People are running all over. I’m tripping and falling. I don’t know if I laid him down or sat him down.
‘I look up to see if I can run. I’m ducking, dodging, turning left, turning right. … Every time you hear a gun shot, it’s like ‘Oh, I’m dead.’
‘I’m just disoriented after I put him down,” Rohrs said. “I’m just waiting for me to hit the ground and fall down dead. You could see the gunfire and people are dropping.”
He says he tried to retrieve his son but eventually jumped over the balcony and fled.
But Ms Legratta saw Ethan as she lay on the floor with the wound to her leg that stretched from her upper thigh to waist.
She pulled the infant to him and ran out the theatre with her daughter and baby boy – only realising she had been hit when she made it outside.
Rohrs said he was horrified to realise his fiancee, son and daughter when he made it outside.
‘My son’s still in there,’ he told ABC News. ‘My girlfriend is still in there. I’m out here. Who leaves their child there?’
Honorable responses to that situation:
1. Using your body to shield your loved ones.
2. Charging the gunman.
Dishonorable responses:
1. Abandoning your loved ones and running for it.
So this wannabe superhero dropped his 4 month old baby and ran for it. I’m surprised he didn’t try to use his daughter as a human shield. I would tell you what I really think but I’m limited by vocabulary because the words I want to use are all sexist and denigrating towards women.
But wait! There’s more!
The couple then reunited outside the cinema, after Ms Legratta phoned her fiance who had driven away from the scene.
Okay, I might buy a story that went something like “I thought they were right behind me” or even “I was going to get help.”
But getting in the car and driving away? (EXPLETIVES DELETED)
If I was her I would shoot him myself. I damn sure wouldn’t marry him.

I’m beginning to wonder if he felt he needed to get rid of contraband on his person and that’s why he drove away. I think anyone can at least understand the situation and fleeing the theater, but driving away? WTF? There had to be cause.
If he’s more concerned with contraband than his kids, that’s even worse.
Well, the rationale of a criminal is certainly not readily apparent to law-abiding citizens, but to quote Walter Sobchak, “At least it’s an ethos.”
He should run for president. The Obots would love him.
There’s a martiini in my nose now. You trying to kill me?
OMFG that’s hilarious.
Note how he left the baby on the floor & ran and says this about it all:
Only concerned about himself.
Looks like huffpoop does love him – check out their story – he proposed at the hospital and she accepted.

She should marry this guy – the complete stranger who actually helped her and her kids get out alive

Okay, at 19 he’s a bit young for her, but she should look for someone LIKE him – you know, a decent human being.
Had to be done. Pin it.
Word. I wouldn’t let him *touch* my baby if I were her — and it is *her* baby, not his, because he left the baby on the floor, left the 4 year old daughter who knows where & saved his own skin. He gave up all rights to claim those children he abandoned, IMO — he’s the sperm-donor, not a “father” in any sense of the word.
I’ll say it again. There are few sperm donors, and they get paid for it. Most are sperm pushers.
You can get paid for it?
Where do I apply?
Oswald ——–> Stop it !!!
I just lost my coffee through my nose. The keyboard is a mess.
The hospital bracelet is probably an identifier that he’s the father of a child who is a patient. Whenever my son was admitted to Children’s Hospital as an infant (I have gray hair for a reason), we had matching hospital bracelets so that I could always prove he was mine. Which makes it even more disgusting.
elliesmom ~ we all have gray hair for those very same reasons………….
it never ends.
He was afraid the baby’s crying would cause the guy to notice him and shoot him so he ditched the kid and ran. What a jerk.
Many definitions come to mind about this parental unit poser, but brave is not one of them. Total LOSER. If I were her, I would seriously rethink the partnership.
I like the term “parental unit poser”. She should dump him now rather than down the road – which will certainly happen after she catches him f*%king one of the neighbors.
“The babies will have been making too much noise for staying at home and he won’t know what else to do. He has needs.”
No child should be left in the parental unit poser’s guardianship. Poor specimen for emulation.
Somehow, I’m not surprised. I wrote him off when I read he took an infant to a midnight show…
You and I both Anthony. Who takes an infant to a midnight screening?
OMG! Peris Morgan is interviewing the couple right now on CNN!!
Well, it’s now in California. I guess it’s a rebroadcast from earlier today. Now they’ve cut away to the news conference. I wonder if Piers will return to the couple. I wonder if he knows what the “dad” and I use that term loosely, did.
My sentiments exactly.
And, we need a new word to describe this turd because there are no words to describe him (I refuse to even call him the “father” — he’s a sperm donor, no more) because calling him a fucking cowardly asshole is actually an insult to fucking cowardly assholes.
I feel no qualms judging him even in this situation — many people in the history of this world have been in extreme danger, even in gunfire situations, and they protect their children and risk their own lives. Go to Pompeii — many of the remains are of mothers crouching over their babies trying to use themselves as a shield to protect their children from the lava. Never in my life have I heard of a father ditching his baby & fleeing from danger. Disgusting & he should be ashamed — of course someone who thinks “fuck the kid, I’m saving my own ass” is incapable of feeling shame, so I won’t be holding my breath on that one.
You never know how someone will behave in a crisis , until you find out . He was actually looking for sympathy on Morgans show . What a total loser .
If this lady does not dumb this load , she is flat out crazy and a danger to her kids.
As for him for he should have coward tattooed across his forehead.
For the rest of his miserable cowardly life he should have to look in the mirror and know what he did
Perfect HelenK, “danger to the children.” Actually, I can’t imagine that this guy would be of much use to any adult in an emergency. As a parent, you bet your life I would have jumped on top of the kids to shield them before running away.
way off topic
I just watched an independent movie called The Art of the Steal. it is a documentry about the Barrnes foundation and billions of dollars in art. How politicians and foundations broke a will to take over the art.
It happened in Philadelphia.
It was like a microism of how backtrack got installed in the white house.
If you get the chance to rent it and see it please do.
This is the second time I have seen a will broken in Philadelphia.
During the revolutionary war there was a financier named Stephan Girard who helped raise the money for the war. When he died his will said he wanted his money to go to open a school for fatherless white boys. ( remember this was the 1700s) The Girard school was opened and during the 1960s Cecil B Moore started demonstrations and went to court to have the will overturned. He won and both black and white boys were allowed to go to the school. As far as I know no black boy ever went because part of the deal was all money to support the boy was to go to the school. Social security payments and such.
In Pennsylvania your will means nothing
from what I understand from a friend, neither does a child custody decree. If you’re the father and you have pull, you can do whatever the heck you want – even when the child declares he is being abused and requests being with his mother full time.
This quote especially struck me: “My son’s still in there. My girlfriend is still in there.”
Even though the article refers to the 4-year-old as “their” daughter, I will bet the farm that he is not the father of the little girl.
Bad enough he abandoned his son and girlfriend, but he didn’t even spare a thought for the GF’s daughter.
I kow, right.. I thought that the moment I read that yesterday. He is a phony and it’s no wonder HuffPoop likes him. They don’t know real from fake any day of the week. But that’s what happens when you live in your own reality.
This riles me no end. Its just unnatural. Guy can’t protect his own children? And drives away? I have half a mind to put a stake through his heart. Hope this doesn’t get me banned here.
He looks stupid. She looks stuck.
Reblogged this on Mcnorman's Weblog and commented:
Good gawd, now the parental unit poser is engaged to this woman. Can someone please help this woman get a clue?
This couple is thinking saying he proposed will get them a free wedding. Looking for sympathy wedding swag. Losers!!

I can’t believe any newspaper would give so much space to this coward.
I’ll just bet “it was the longest 10 minute”s of his life. While he was driving away – escaping the onslaught – leaving his family to live or die on their own.
Holy Jeebus!
