GOP looks for ways to stop the rape comments

Rep. Phil Gingrey’s attempts to explain Todd Akin’s rape remarks are leaving many Republicans beyond frustrated that a few in their party can’t help but insert rape into the already contentious abortion debate.

“This is actually pretty simple. If you’re about to talk about rape as anything other than a brutal and horrible crime, stop,” said Republican strategist Kevin Madden, who was a senior adviser in Mitt Romney’s campaign.

On Thursday, the Georgia Republican didn’t heed that advice, telling a local Chamber of Commerce breakfast that Akin was “partially right” when he said last year that a woman can stop herself from getting pregnant.

“We tell infertile couples all the time that are having trouble conceiving because of the woman not ovulating, ‘Just relax. Drink a glass of wine. And don’t be so tense and uptight because all that adrenaline can cause you not to ovulate,’” Gingrey said.

He also said that Akin’s definition of a “non-legitimate rape” could be “a scared-to-death 15-year-old that becomes impregnated by her boyfriend and then has to tell her parents.”

The comments were reported by the Marietta Daily Journal. Gingrey later said that he wasn’t trying to defend remarks by Akin or Indiana Senate candidate Richard Mourdock, and that his position was misconstrued “in my attempt to provide context as to what I presumed they meant.”

But Gingrey’s lengthy explanation of what Akin meant was quickly circulated by Democrats, repudiated by medical groups, and had some Republicans smacking their heads in frustration.

It’s really quite simple: If you are a Republican candidate and/or office holder and you have a penis but you do not have a medical degree, do not discuss anything having to do with vaginas.

Ever.

You don’t know what you are talking about. The more you talk, the dumber you will look. Even if you have a medical degree it’s better to be safe than sorry.

On the CBS Late Show Thursday, Girls star Lena Dunham said that not only is NBC’s Brian Williams often on the set for the filming of this sex-packed HBO program, the cast jokes about having a “BriWi-cam” on him to gauge his reactions to his daughter Allison’s sex scenes

DAVID LETTERMAN, HOST: We had Brian Williams on the show the other night. His daughter, one of your lovely stars.

LENA DUNHAM: Allison.

LETTERMAN: Yes. And I didn’t talk to him specifically about it, but from the shows that I have, if I were the father of one of the women on the program, I’d, you know, maybe just a little, whoa.

DUNHAM: It’s true.

LETTERMAN: You know what I’m saying?

DUNHAM: He’s surprisingly jaunty about the whole thing. I mean, my Dad sort of takes a perverse pleasure in it. Like people will say to him like, “God, you must be so upset watching Lena get naked and have sex in all these odd positions.” And he kind of goes like, “No, I love it, I’m so proud.” He like really wants to defy people’s expectations. And but Brian is like, Brian’s on the set more than some of our PAs.

LETTERMAN: Actually showing up!

DUNHAM: He comes and sits in video village and acts really proud of us. He calls me “Leans.” It’s not a reality I ever thought I’d exist in.

LETTERMAN: Yeah. Well, I mean, we have to be adult and proud and happy about the circumstance, and it is, again, acting. It is entertainment. It is a business.

DUNHAM: Yeah, we had our premiere last night and we always make jokes about how when there’s a sex scene with Allison we want to have like a BriWi-cam, like just like a camera on his face where we can register it all.

I have a 26 year old daughter and I have absolutely no desire to watch her get naked and have sex in any position. Even if she was on a legitimate show doing simulated porn like you see on HBO I couldn’t watch it.

I find the whole idea creepy. If that makes me a prude then so be it.
