Jackass is sometimes compared to Mr. Spock, but he has this weird thing he does in speeches. When he wants to act sincere, he tends to use his “important” voice. It very much reminds me of Captain Kirk’s “Risk is our Business” speech from the episode “Return to Tomorrow,” except Obama isn’t any good at it.
On the precipice of the Big Speech™ tonight, I was thinking about how the expectations of him have not only lowered, but downright disappeared. For example, some people think Obama should have gotten tough with the Republicans over the timing of the speech instead of backing off. The fact is that he wanted an address before Congress and John Boehner has the keys to the building. The confrontation was a bad idea to begin with. He could have picked Friday, but he probably didn’t want a debate filled with “where are the plan?” moments.
The issue isn’t really about turning left or right. Jackass has veered off the road, through a ditch and currently barreling through a cornfield with a scarecrow hanging off the bumper. He’s not just off track, he would have to fire most of his cabinet, repeal his legislation and make an admission of guilt just to get back to off track.
