Obama Team Feared Coup If He Prosecuted War Crimes

President-Elect Obama’s advisers feared in 2008 that authorities would oust him in a coup and that Republicans would block his policy agenda if he prosecuted Bush-era war crimes, according to a law school dean who served as one of Obama’s top transition advisers.

University of California at Berkeley Law School Dean Christopher Edley, Jr., above, the sixth highest-ranking member of the 2008 post-election transition team preparing Obama’s administration, revealed the team’s thinking on Sept. 2 in moderating a forum on 9/11 held by his law school (also known as Boalt Hall). Edley was seeking to explain Obama’s “look forward” policy on suspected Bush-era law-breaking that the president-elect announced on a TV talk show in January 2009.

But Edley’s rationale implies that Obama, or at least his team, feared the military/national security forces that the president is supposed be commanding — and that Republicans have intimidated him right from the start of his presidency even after voters in 2008 rejected Republicans by the largest combined presidential-congressional mandate in recent U.S. history.

Edley responded to my request for additional information by providing a description of the transition team’s fears. Edley said that transition officials, not Obama, agreed that he faced the possibility of a “revolt.”

That is one hell of an allegation.

One possibility is that this story is pure horseshit designed to let Obama off the hook with disappointed lefties. That would mean Team Obama just defamed our military and national security leaders for partisan advantage.

Another possibility is that the story is true but Obama and his transition team were just paranoid. The third possibility is that the story is true and there was a real threat of a coup d’état.

In either of those two scenarios Obama is a coward.

What do you think?

I think passing the bong while watching Seven Days in May is a really bad way to plan a transition.

There might be a 4th possibility where team obama is attempting to rewrite history to cover the fact that he continued the war crimes after taking office and would be in a difficult position to prosecute those crimes while he was doing the same thing.

I googled 9-11 for a new image for my 9-11 blog post. The first images that came up were the conspiracy truthers and illustrations proving Team Boooosh planned the attack. Really? Sigh.

Finally found a couple, check it out…..

When I posted it, WordPress prompted this gentle suggestion to add to my tags….new construction.

We live in a bizzarro world.

All I can think is that something is going on with the Pentagon and CIA with the WH. This is a preemptive leak to stop the ring knockers and spooks from doing or saying or leaking something. I do not want to think what it may be. What is is their crazy story for the reason for not prosecuting financial felons? Maybe he is afraid they would spit on him. This crap makes him look even weaker if that was possible.

You’ll notice the subtle conflation of a military coup with Republican obstructionism. The military in this country has no specified political power. They would have take out the President, Vice President and Democratic Speaker of the House to even break the chain of command. On the other hand, it is entirely legal for the Republicans to refuse to vote for any damn thing they please and to use the rules of the Congress to do so. Obama is all too familiar with doing that himself.

    FWIW, I think it’s a lame excuse.

    “…authorities would oust him in a coup…”

Who are these “authorities” who allegedly hold all the power in our country? Little greys?

Sometimes I think we try to create some man behind the curtain, some secret organization that’s really running things, simply because it’s too painful to accept that the buffoons we already have are not only in charge, we gave them their jobs.

  8. BO campaigned hard on Gitmo, even gave a strong speech on civilians trials in Spring 2009 which would potentially have put Cheney and the CIA on the stand. Then he walked everything back over the next year or so while he pressed for a surge in Afghanistan. There was never any conviction or principle that drove his decisions. As usual it was politics, he had already begun reaching out to the right. The coup allegation is typical tinfoil fantasy.

I think it’s pretty clear that the right-wing crazies are running the country, no matter who’s in Congress or who’s in the White House.

How do they do it? Intimidation, and showing that they’re willing to destroy the country to get their way.

And yes, Obama is a coward.

Oh, and by the way, the Republicans blocked his “agenda”, whatever it might have been, anyway.

See what happens when you give in to bullies?
