Why is my bullshit detector going off?

CNN:

Two of the three suspects believed to be involved in a potential 9/11 anniversary plot against New York or Washington are of Arab descent and traveled to the United States last week, according to a U.S. government official.

Authorities are operating under the assumption that two of the suspects have arrived on U.S. soil, and have been piecing together clues gleaned from flight logs and manifests, among other sources, said the official, who declined to be named.

A third plotter is believed to be have traveling in Europe, though it is not clear whether that person has arrived in the United States, the official said.

American spy networks had intercepted communications of an attack from an al Qaeda operative in Pakistan, derived from a source who has provided accurate information in the past, official say.

No other corroborating evidence of an attack has been uncovered, but it has prompted intelligence officials to sift through communications from other al Qaeda cells.

The information suggests the plan — thought to involve a vehicle-borne explosive device — is meant to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. The exact type of strike, however, is largley unclear and still remains unconfirmed.

U.S. officials rarely speak on the record about intelligence intercepts. And in the days following the raid on Osama bin Laden’s compound, officials indicated al Qaeda had gone to great lengths to avoid having its communications intercepted by the United States.

While the precise nature of communication intercepts is rarely discussed, U.S. officials repeatedly have indicated their comfort with sharing the results of those intercepts.

Authorities also say they have picked up “chatter,” or widely divergent communications, from extremists that suggest the newly tapped al Qaeda head, Ayman al-Zawahiri, is in some way involved in the current plot.

Meanwhile, heightened security was visible Saturday in New York and Washington as intelligence officials worked to pin down information about the potential threat.

A senior U.S. official said the plot was believed to involve three individuals. It is believed to entail a vehicle bomb, but “we cannot rule out other means,” the official said.

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden also weighed in Friday, saying the information was at least in part gleaned from the May raid against bin Laden in Abottabad, Pakistan.

“This is the first … credible piece of information we’ve gotten,” Biden told NBC’s “Today” show. “All hands are on deck.”

It never hurts to be careful about this kind of stuff, but they sure seem to know a lot about these guys and what they’re planning, don’t they?

I’m remembering how we used to hear about “credible threats” and “possible terrorist acts” whenever Dubya needed a little boost in the approval ratings.

Okay, maybe I’m cynical, but fool me once, won’t get fooled again.

My BS Meter went off too. Mrs. Obama was all over NYC yesterday, U.S. Open, Queens, Fashion Week! Then I remembered when I was so lucky to be in midtown 2 years ago for Date Night.

They shut down half of Times Square ! AND all the streets between their pre-theater dinner downtown and their theater and the motorcade route back to their ride back to DC. So I thought, do you suppose the “alert” is to keep all the uninvited first responders busy and away from the memorial ceremony?

I did tell my NYC relatives, just in case, stay out elevators and subways tomorrow.

My BS detector goes off every time I hear stuff like “we have credible information from anonymous sources about unknown potential suspects who may be planning an attack somewhere…. ”

“There are known knowns; there are things we know we know.
We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know.
But there are also unknown unknowns – the ones we don’t know we don’t know.” -Rumsfeld

They got on a plane and were waved into the country by immigration/Homeland Security? I don’t believe it.

Yea, while our mothers and grandmothers were being detained for wearing suspicious-looking hearing aids or shady colostomy bags.

      Whatever.

….oooo, but did I mention you should be very, very afraid and that Obama and the government will protect you and stuff if you just agree to give up all your rights and dignity?

We were getting ready to watch the speech on NBC. When one of the reporters shares the breaking news with Brian Williams of a terrorist threat. The reporter goes through various versions of the same non details which makes it sound worse each time. After rolling our eyes when they broke the news, we were laughing by the end of it.

Never believed the Dubya version either. It was always too convenient timing, and sure enough, we later heard it was all political.

yup. I had the same reaction.

And then I wondered if the Bush years left me that cynical.

It sure seemed conveniently timed with his new speech, er, campaign launch.
