What were the biggest stories of the year?

This is that time of year when these stories are obligatory.

Let’s see,we had the Tucson tragedy, the Japanese earthquake/tsunami/nuclear accident/Godzilla invasion, leadership changes in Egypt, Libya and North Korea, a royal wedding, a burial at sea, a disappointing non-candidacy, a drop in our nation’s credit rating, a pretty good World Series, a shocking acquittal and a big open-air slumber party.

That was all off the top of my head. What did I miss?

What do YOU think the biggest story of the year is/was?

What was a story but shouldn’t have been? What should have been a story but wasn’t?

On December 31, 1976 if you had asked people across the nation what were the most significant events of that year, how many would have mentioned the founding of Apple Computer? 100 years from now when people look back at 2011, what will they say the most significant events of this year were?

Some “big” stories aren’t really significant – Casey Anthony is an example.

  2. Story that should not have been- well two actually-
    Sheen and Lohan.

The local news has been pretty funny. They’ve been spotlighting other decades, the 80’s, the 90’s. I think 2011 was just so bad that people don’t even want to think about it long enough to say goodbye.

TGIF.last one this year.enjoy the heck out of it. 😆

  5. My favorite thing in the last couple of days was Occupy people protesting Ron Paul and yelling about a police state. Um, Ron is pretty much the most anti-police state candidate out there. Ah, Occupy logic, the same logic that leads to using the bathroom where you sleep.

  6. Another big story this year is of course the obvious secret conspiracy of evil forces using DHS to infiltrate and destroy the Occupy movement. You don’t think the real Occupy people did all that violence, destruction of property, countless rapes, gang rapes, deaths, suicides, using the bathroom where they sleep, on police cars, on sidewalks, etc.? Seriously, they couldn’t be that pathetic, out of touch, low life’s without help from DHS could they? Come on. You people just don’t “get it”.

How about favorite movies or books of the year?

The biggest story of the year. Obama playing catch-up with the rest of the world. Pres Where’s Waldo on most of the major events and opinions that seemed intent on undermining Hillary at the expense of a strong US foreign policy.

This was kind of funny. A screeching OWSie walks into a pole while protesting Romney. Oopsie.

Scientific discovery of the year (by me): Doubling your shots allows you reach the blissful moment known as apathy that much sooner. I’m up to four shots per drink. 😉

The biggest stories for me revolved around Apple, both amazingly good, and stunningly sad. In 2011 they made history again with products and services and with them became the most valuable company in the world, but they also lost their visionary leader who brought them back from the brink.

Here’s a good roundup of Apple’s tumultuous year:
