Doggone Politics

I’m thinking that if you’re going to spend a couple of weeks pushing a meme about a candidate’s  family dog traveling atop a car for family vacations a few decades ago, you might want to make sure your candidate doesn’t have any doggie bones in his own closet. You know, wouldn’t want to alienate the all important dog owners vote, now would ya?

See also. It trended nationally last night.

I missed the fun last night and read the previous thread just now.
Laughing too hard to eat my dog-free breakfast.

  2. imusthavepie says:

What’s great about the “Obama Ate Dog” story is that the Romney team responded to the Seamus story the way they needed to….sadly. A reasoned argument, like the one myiq put forward would never work…but this will work.

    • I actually suspect this has Mitten’s fingerprints all over it. People forget that he looks like Mr. Nice Guy, but he made his wealth by playing the whole field, and making sure his fingerprints weren’t on part of it. Just like Obama, ftr. So I would bet that this little tidbit was bled into the infostream somewhere by someone connected to Romney.

I do agree it sucks that this is what we’re stuck with, instead of actually discussing issues and addressing real problems, but it is gratifying to see Obama and his minions get ferocious pushback. Treacher’s article is already at #2 on Memeorandum. I hope it tops the stories today.

      • WMCB says:

Oh, I don’t doubt that Mitt’s team may have put it out there, perhaps intending it to be a mild pushback on the Seamus thing. I doubt they expected or planned what happened next, though. 😀

      • angienc says:

I totally think the Romney camp is connected with this especially after I saw the clip of Mitt & Ann on the Diane Sawyer interview defending the Seamus thing (instead of saying it was 30 years ago, wouldn’t do it today, etc. to make the story die). They had this in their back pocket (although it probably went better than expected).

However, the really sad thing is: this was in Obama’s book, so nobody “put it out there” — it’s always been there. However, it appears no one has actually bothered to read the book. Romney was smart enough to read it, which tells me he’s smart enough to not get railroaded by Obama & his Chicago thugs, which is good enough for me at this point.

        • I disagree that this proves nobody read the book. I read it and I knew, and I bet a bunch of these folks did, too. But as WMCB explained, this isn’t about any real outrage over him eating dog as a child. It’s about pushback and mockery.

It was the perfect opening to put them on notice that they have to be very, very careful with those reams of opposition research they’ve generated. They better put adults in charge, or this will keep happening and Obama will be a laughing stock by July. It’s really strategic. If cons had ever led with this themselves, they could have been accused of racism. That’s why no one mentioned it before.

    • votermom says:

Good point. I guess it shows how our elections all hinge on emotions rather than logic.

Interesting to me is the subtext of each meme.

Seamus on the roof “terrified”* is supposed to underscore that Romney is without empathy – a robot. If he can’t empathize with a his own dog, how can he empathize with regular folks (aka 99%)?

(Presuming it’s true that he was terrified and not just suffering from indigestion. The way the Romneys tell the story, they transported the dog this way more than once, but it only crapped on the car once. )

Obama talking about eating dog (and snake etc) as a kid shows he didn’t grow up in an American culture. This echoes the right’s underlying concern with him — that American values are not ingrained in his psyche. He doesn’t understand what makes America great and thus he is, deliberately or not, destroying it.

      • WMCB says:

votermom, I agree with you that that was the Obama team’s subtext in dragging out the ancient Seamus story. Because they meant it as a serious attack.

But I don’t think that Obama’s america values had anything at all to do with the counter of #ObamaAteADog. It would have been if the attack were serious. But it was more subtle than that.

        This:

I guess it shows how our elections all hinge on emotions rather than logic.

WAS their point, and the main unspoken target of the joke – not the ridiculous fact that Obama ate a dog.

        • votermom says:

If the obots could brush it off as jokes it would stay that way – simple ridicule.

Ironically it’s when the the obots start defending Obama’s childhood menu that they end up pushing the subtext themselves. The only defense is “that was the culture he grew up in”.
All the conservatives have to do is agree.

        • DandyTiger says:

Agree. The point here is not that Obama ate dog meat when he was a kid where it made sense in that cultural context. By itself that would be a smaller blip. The point is that the Obama team tried to make a big political story out of the Romney dog issue while they had something even worse in his past. All of course silly. But all designed to push more subtle messages. The Obama team blew it. Sadly none of them, probably including Obama, ever read that book. 🙂

        • Karma says:

I agree that it was meant as a serious attack. With Seamus getting his wiki page in Jan 2012, it was clearly set up for Obama’s team to exploit when the time came. I guess technically Santorium opened up the topic when he got desperate. But contrast that with Obama’s team starting at the desperate topic.

They’ve clearly got a poke a voter with a stick list and it came back and bit them in butt.

Now that they unleased this, they better go back and review that list. Because they never were really all that skilled at introducing anything. It’s the media that smoothed out the rough/ruff edges for all these years.

          Sorry dog puns are fun.

  3. driguana says:

    You are what you eat!

  4. WMCB says:

It was really fun making the Obots crazy and undermining their narrative of “Mitt Romney, evil animal torturer”. I spent half the evening on twitter, watching the thing break, and grow viral, and hundreds jump into the mockery.

And you know what was most fun and fascinating about it? It was obvious that no one tweeting really believes that Obama did anything bad. It was not a serious attack. No one was actually outraged that he ate an exotic food in a foreign culture where that’s normal. It was all sheer mockery not just of Obama, but of his media noise machine that decided to make Seamus a big campaign issue because poor Obama has NOTHING to run on.

It was all, “Hey, you wanna get trivial? Fine, we got yer trivial right here!” Which is why everyone laughed even harder when furious Obots started tweeting how R’s are teh stupid, because THAT”S WHAT THEY EAT IN INDONESIA, AND HE WAS SIX, YOU DUMMIES! That right there brought on more peals of laughter and more jokes, because they were the clueless ones for not recognizing the entire ironic nature of this #ObamaAteADog wave. Woosh, right over their heads!

If the R’s had been seriously saying that Obama had done something bad, it would have been just stupid, mean spirited, and not particularly fun. It was the fact that it was sublimely ironic, a kind of self-referential mocking of dumb “gotcha” narratives, that made it go viral.

    • WMCB says:

IOW, it is always a fuckload funnier to pull the chain of someone who obviously does not get that their chain is being pulled. That takes it to new heights of hilarity. 😀

      • myiq2xu says:

      • elliesmom says:

My daughter took her latest job while recovering from a injury that caused her to have a slight limp for a few weeks. One of her new co-workers graciously asked her if she needed some accommodations made. She said, “No, I’m used to walking with a slight limp. It comes from all those years of living with my parents and having my leg pulled.”

      • yttik says:

It really is the American way to mock those who are in power. Unfortunately we haven’t been able to blow off much steam since Obama’s election because the media has been in the tank for him and racism has been such an issue. The dog issue is like returning to the natural order of things. Finally!

      • 1539days says:

That’s the reason South Park started to mock liberals more than conservatives. Conservatives don’t get nearly as outraged, so the writers moved to more angry pastures.

  6. WMCB says:

This was tweeted toward the end of the hilarity last night, and give great insight about what happened. It wasn’t really about eating a dog. It was about the press dutifully trotting out “serious” questions on Obama’s behalf about the great scandal of the Romneys and Seamus.

It was about not sitting back helpless watching the media machine do their thing, just as they did in 2008.

THIS, my friends, is what is was really about:

    https://twitter.com/#!/ExJon/status/192452052549509122

  7. WMCB says:

Oh, I also had another thought last night about framing the narrative. I need to think on this some more, flesh it out, but the gist is this:

I was thinking of the race-baiters, the Sharptons and Toures of the country, who consistently tell the country that a return to Jim Crow and lynchings and the widespread KKK is imminent. They scaremonger with visions of Bull Conner around every corner, just waiting to pounce and take over the whole country at the slightest provocation or relaxing of our uber-vigilant guard.

What if we started treating this crap the same as we would treat ANY conspiracy theory? Because that’s precisely what it is. What if we mocked the tinfoilyness of it all?

Conspiracy theorists, the “black helicopters” crowd, take a kernel of truth (that the govt overreaches and abuses authority) and take it to absurd conclusions (ZOMG!!! FEMA camps! Illuminati!)

Maybe we ought to start referring to the racial conspiracy theorists as what they are. The white helicopters crowd – who take an example of mild or questionable racism as proof that slavery is going to return any minute now.

    • DeniseVB says:

What helps me understand the minds of the far left, are the years I spent in the trenches at DU and dKos. I couldn’t question anything and was simply told to *believe*…. and donate to their sites. It’s still painful to go back and read them. Something happened to the Dem Party between 2004 and 2008 and I can’t quite put my finger on it…….

      • WMCB says:

Yep, me too. I was on Kos as well. I think about all the times I jumped on the outrage train over some “most disgusting, extreme, horriblest proposed legislation evah!!!” without bothering to…… go find the actual bill and read it, not just their summation of it.

And frankly, I am embarrassed that I did that. Maybe some of those bills truly were horrible, and maybe some weren’t. The point is – I didn’t bother to know for myself.

        • DeniseVB says:

I went to YK07 with some fellow kossacks and DUers. I started to feel the “change” at a table of 12 with Taylor Marsh and “icebergslim”. First time I heard the term, sit down and shut up, because they both had something more important to say and I wasn’t allowed to question them. I always thought Question Authority was one of my legal liberal rights…lol….I learned that day, it really wasn’t.

  8. WMCB says:

Hey, LOLA! You are going to love this new one by She-PAC. Women, front and center:

    • WMCB says:

This is a really smart move, politically speaking. She-PAC keeps making a contrast: D Party: “takes care” of women in return for mindless vote R Party: Is empowering women, period.

Whether you think it’s true or not, it’s good framing.

    • votermom says:

      Love that –
specially the dig at the very end “If you want something said, pick a man” – Obama stuttering
“If you want something done, pick a woman.”

    • OMFG, WM! You MADE MY DAY! I posted this on P&L’s FB page with this comment:

This is exactly what I mean by pushing for parity leading to reform. More women, no matter where they come from, will change the game. Republicans have run women, but they have not yet run on women’s issues. They’ve preferred to reject identity politics…until now. This is the first time I have seen a conservative women’s organization note that Congress is 85% male, and it’s the first time I’ve seen them run women specifically FOR other women. This is representative of reform, folks, and that’s the point. I am loving it.

A war by women is right. And we will knock the fuck out of anybody who gets in our way. Go women!

    • Wow. That’s a great ad. It gave me chills just watching it. The comment about watching children run the country was priceless.

  9. Lulu says:

It is about the sanctimoniousness and ridiculousness of the WH and their minions. They make everyone feel like they are in a straightjacket. THEY determine what is politically correct. THEY determine what can be discussed. THEY determine who is A SERIOUS PERSON and who is qualified to talk about any given subject, field, policy, issue. THEY tell everyone to shut the hell up.

No less than David Axelrod himself, plus his PR machine, were pumping this story with Obama making nasty cracks from the sidelines. Obama cannot run on his policies because he doesn’t have any that are not a complete nightmare. He has to run on frigging dog stories from 30 years ago. It is pitiful. The push back is perfect from the Romney camp. They are making fun of Obama’s oh so serious exotic background that makes him uniquely qualified for foreign affairs. He ate dog.

    • WMCB says:

HONK! This wasn’t really about Obama, per se. It was about exposing how the media sets the narrative in his favor. THEY decide which outrageous outrage over “trivia” is appropriate, and which is not.

This whole thing was a big “Fuck You” to that entire dynamic.

  10. WMCB says:

        • WMCB says:

        • Lulu says:

          Leg of lab?

        • DandyTiger says:

Seriously it isn’t. Every time I hear a faux prog saying something about the opponents, I’m going to say, at least they don’t eat dog.

And if they bring up the 30+ years ago / kid thing, I’m going to say, but that was fine to talk about 30+ years old Romney stories. And then just for fun, I’ll follow the above tweet and say, sure, let’s talk about his coke habit then.

I’d love to just make the argument that Obama is a empty suit fronting for wall street and the banks and pushing Republican policies, but that doesn’t seem to get through. So I’ll just make fun of them.

        • votermom says:

And if they bring up the 30+ years ago / kid thing

Nit-picking: In his book Obama says that’s when he was introduced to dog meat. That means the first time he tried it; not necessarily the last.
Does it say he never again ate it?

Edit: My new passive-aggressive faux-sympathy line will be : “It’s not Obama’s fault he grew up as a dog-eater.”

        • angienc says:

Actually if what happened 30 years ago is relevant to today, then Obama’s coke habit is 100% appropriate to talk about — 1982-1983 is the school year he gives in the book. So, 30 years ago Romney was taking his family on vacation and Obama was doing coke.

        • angienc says:

I think you mean this joke is going to dog Obama. 🙂

        • leslie says:

It really isn’t. I was at a cafe this morning reading and having coffee, when a HUGE dog stopped at the window where I was sitting. All I could think of was “Here I am having coffee and a great Dane-ish” ( i knew I was stealing it from something I read, but it made me LOL at the cafe`).

I was up last night about 3:00 a.m. after finishing my taxes, and laughing hysterically at the tweets I was reading here.
Plus, I had just survived a grueling tax marathon because my laptop kept stalling – at one time for more than 2 hours.

    • Lulu says:

  18. The comments today have me rolling on the floor like a dog. LOL I love that the irony is so lost on the proglodytes. And like yttik said, its AWESOME that the door has been thrown open to insult the POTUS again. That’s part of the fun of this political game. I’m even liking the pointedness of republican ads.

When the progs question me about why I’m NOBAMA I ask them what Obama accomplishment has benefited them personally. response is zip. nada. except their responses what Obama’s policies will do for them in the future. They even complain that their unemployment has run out. I remind them that one thing they can point to of Clinton’s many accomplishments is FMLA. And FMLA was accomplished during Clinton’s first few years, signed in 1993. All my friends and acquaintances have had to use it at one time or another. A FMLA request is required by most HRs for illnesses or time-off taken 5 business days in a row, unless vacation time was formally requested. Where’s Obama’s FMLA equivalent???

Just watched Romney’s speech in NC. It was good. One laugh moment: Said that this time around at the D convention, Obama would not be standing under any Greek columns, since he certainly doesn’t want to remind the public what has happened to Greece! Attacked Obama a lot, then said very forcefully: “One thing you will NOT see me do is attack the American people. I don’t do that.”

Talked about Obama’s big promises, quoted parts of O’s own overblown convention speech. Pointed out that all those conditions that Obama was supposed to change have NOT changed, have gotten worse, and it’s his fault. He has failed to do the job, then has tried to blame everyone else under the sun for it. Romney ripped him for not taking responsibility.

Mitt ain’t pulling any punches. He is going to, I think, continually remind people of Obama in 2008 standing under those Greek columns all puffed up with his grand plans to transform the country just by being Obama. Good strategy, IMO, because the contrast with what he has delivered is so stark.

Of course, the obligatory “Hitler Finds Out Obama Ate His Dog” video

  42. It’s at the top of Memeorandum!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ♥ (treacher’s article, not this one)

  43. 1539days says:

Here’s the question. Does SNL mention Obama eating dog? It’s Wednesday, there’s plenty of time to put it in the cold open. They’ve made fun of dogs hating Romney twice. Just how much do they show their naked partisanship?

I still say it’s even money that there is no Obama dog skit.

    • DandyTiger says:

Or if they do, they’ll down play it kind of like Dogs Against Romney are now defending Obama eating dogs.

      • angienc says:

The irony burns! The guy who named an organization Dogs Against Romney is complaining about “desperate ploys” and “trivial memes.” These people will never get it even when it is literally staring them in the eyes.

      • myiq2xu says:

Remember that “Do you want your pillow fluffed” SNL skit?

Try to find it at the SNL site.

    • DandyTiger says:

They’re assuming after he was introduced to dog meat as a kid that he stopped. And it begs the question of him bragging about it in his 30s.

    • Karma says:

And not to play the race card on those tools. But isn’t their comment the actual insensitive remark in terms of another country and their diet? And then to blame it on an adult. Huh? It’s not a taboo meal choice in that country so putting an American vegan-shame construct around it and factory farming in support of Obama, seems to reach further for the offensive than usual. And what factory farms were in that country?

  45. HELENK says:

it is getting funnier by the minute
the obots trying to explain why the romney dog story is important

  46. DandyTiger says:

jtLOL: I just want to thank everyone who has spent the entire day defending @BarackObama from the people quoting his own words about eating dogs.

  47. WMCB says:

This person gets why even though it’s a joke, it’s still important:

    http://www.redstate.com/streiff/2012/04/18/the-meme-war-we-must-win/

    • HELENK says:

perception is important. For almost 5 years the obots have been allowed to paint any opposition as racism, and all backtrack did as great even when he did nothing.
That is ending this year. People are no longer buying the BS .
Humor has always been used against presidents, I bet if we could find them , there were jokes against Washington.
But since backtrack all humor except when the obots used it against any opposition has been frowned upon.

This dog story was the crack in the ice and for the next months a lot more push back with humor should be expected.

      • Lulu says:

Their humor is always nasty and at the expense of someone else. It is put downs, condescension, inside jokes, snark and used to denigrate to stop discussion or questions. That is over. Obama is not cool. He is not a nice person. He is not a smart person. He is not imaginative or interesting. He is a bully and much of the country is sick of looking at his face. This has been a turning point and the Obama left is confused, angry and unsure what to do. I think the attacks on Romney’s wife was probably was the turning point and he simply gave out the order that they were not going to take the shit anymore. Sometimes the tipping point is as simple as that.

    • Karma says:

Not only that but Hillary Dems know that mocking Obama is his kryptonite and have been practically begging Reps for years to attack Obama as such.

      Palin knew it too.

    • Karma says:

Red State’s article above notes Carville and Begala and their effectiveness mocking Reps. And in reading the ABC news report below they mention Lanny Davis’ article on Seamus.

      http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2012/02/political-punch-dogs-against-romney-democrats-say-unleash-the-hound/

Democrats are still trying to figure out the best way to bring this up. Certainly it wouldn’t be done by President Obama or any top surrogates. But given the world of social media, not to mention shadowy third-party groups, there is no shortage of ways for Seamus Romney to become a household name.

Never mind that Axelrod had already used social media to bring it up, which they don’t mention until the end of the article.

But it made me wonder. Were they were using Hillary supporters to talk dogs, both Lanny Davis (1/12/12….two days later Seamus gets his wiki page) and Paul Begala touched on the topic in articles. Begala even re-tweets a Seamus story on HuffPo.

Which talking heads fought for Hillary harder than these two and are more well known? Were they dispatched to make sure Hillary Dems didn’t bolt? Those uneducated, bitter, caretakers couldn’t vote for a dog abuser./s

It seems like Romney’s women problem is really an Obama polling problem with Hillary Dems.

    • I wanted to leave a comment, so I signed up, only to find I can’t comment for 24 hours. That’s a stupid policy, because they’ve lost that comment now and I’m unlikely to keep trying. Keeping newbies from commenting sacrifices gems like this:

I signed up just to say that I agree 100%. I fought these guys hard all through 2008 and they are very good at what they do. I was pretty much resolved to a fate of Obama winning, and I am for ABO, but these recent battles have given me hope. I was lukewarm about Romney, too, thinking I would just vote for him as protest. But now I have hope and now I’m enthused. That’s what these recent battles and wins mean to me. I am sure I am not alone. If you want to win, keep fighting.

    • Helen — I hope Romney digs up info on all those working poor IL constituents who were forced to live in privatized public housing owned by Rezko who had to live without windows, cockroaches coming out of outlets and sewage backing up into their kitchen sinks — conditions not fit for dogs. Will Obama then say he knows what its like to live in one of those?
