Hyperbole to the Rescue!

Digby goes to church.

Digby has a new ad post up about how our government Republicans are attacking us. By “us” she means citizens of the United States, which don’t include Tea Partiers, conservatives, or anyone willing to vote Republican. As usually, she’s overreaching via hyperbole. She quotes Romney:

“Obama wants to hire more government workers. He says we need more fireman, more policeman, more teachers. Did he not get the message of Wisconsin? The American people did. It’s time for us to cut back on government and help the American people.”

From this statement, she leaps to this:

Romney said what most of his voters believe which is that anyone who gets a government paycheck (other than a soldier) should be fired.

Bolding mine. It seems to me that the problem with illogical progressive thinking might be as easy as understanding parts of speech. Adjectives should match when making comparisons. “No more” does not match “anyone with a government paycheck…should be fired.” Otherwise, we would have no firefighters, police, or teachers at all. I have yet to see a proposal where these positions are eliminated entirely. You?

Such is the logical inconsistencies on the left. What are you finding today?

This is an open thread.

It makes even less sense when you consider that Romney was specifically referencing the Wisconsin reforms as being the way to go.

Excuse me, but did Scott Walker fire all the teachers and firefighters?

    • Lola-at-Large says:

Well, to be fair, her cohort in arms, Spoony, decided to interpret the same Romney quote as an attack on the “popular professions” of firefighters, police, and teachers. It’s like they have lost reading comprehension abilities, except that that’s the kinder speculation. The more likely explanation is that they are spinmasters, appointed to this task.

My hair is just fine, thank you. It;s my brain that hurts. . . everytime I read more of the interpretations of Romney’s response. These people LOVE to spin and twist and tangle anything they can.

I was forced to listen to Obama’s speech where he said the private sector was doing well, what we needed was for local and state governments to hire more people. I couldn’t disagree more. Government workers don’t stimulate the economy, they provide a service that has to be paid for with taxes. They cost us money and at a time when our debt is so high and we have so many unemployed people not able to pay taxes, it’s illogical to advocate for more government workers.

I know in my dinky areas, we do not need more fireman, more teachers, more cops, because so many people are moving away in search of employment, our population is declining. We do have a shiny new multi million dollar border patrol agency with government workers that is really an incredible waste of money up North here. Not many Canadians are trying to sneak into our country looking for jobs and medical care.

10 years ago there were a lot of meth labs in the Central Valley. There were all kinds of grants that came along to hire more cops and form drug task forces.

The meth labs moved elsewhere. The extra cops will be here forever.

      • yttik says:

Things get really interesting when the cops start ignoring the meth labs because their existence is what justifies their budget.

    Spoony goes even farther:

This is what it has come to. Direct attacks on some of the most popular professions in America from a candidate who is explicitly saying he wants to fire teachers and firefighters, while implicitly denying their identity as “American people.”

Ironically, Digby followed up her post with one about cops tasering a pregnant woman.

    • Lola-at-Large says:

LOL. I know, right! I saw that. Shorter Digby: “Hire more pigs!”

      • WMCB says:

The left has become a caricature knee-jerk defense of all things governmental. Govt is the ultimate good, period. It’s no less stupid than a knee-jerk “all govt is bad” idiot.

Govt is a tool. It is neither our salvation nor a demon. The question is what is it to do, how much of it do we really need, how do we pay for it (and that effects how much we think we “need”) and how do we make it accountable. We are still going to disagree and compromise on those pertinent questions, but we at least ought to be having THAT conversation, not this bullshit.

    • DandyTiger says:

      LOL. Now that’s fucking funny.

Oh, Debbie Wasserman Shultz tweeted yesterday that “Romney wants to fire fireman, police & teachers. Who are you going to call if you house is on fire?”

Besides the fact that the POTUS doesn’t actually hire or fire any of those jobs (those are purview of state & local govt) and besides the fact that Romney didn’t even say that, everyone on the left is in complete denial that the stimulus that was supposed to “save” those jobs (and didn’t actually work, as the money went to a lot of other things once it went to the states and *not* to those jobs — kind of like WMCB’s “I gave you money to pay the mortgage & you came home with a stereo” rant the other day) was at best a temporary solution — you can’t forever have federal borrowed from China money propping up these jobs or we’ll end up like Greece.

Now, I love Greece & am pretty familiar with that is going on there (compared to the average American) and despite the hysteria & hyperbole in the US press, the main problem there has been for the last several decades that more than half of the workforce is employed in government/public sector jobs. That is a huge problem & it seems to be Obama’s *solution* for the US economy — he meant it when he said the private sector was “doing fine” (despite his later walk back) because he thinks all we need to do is to just hire more public sector jobs & borrow money to pay for them to force the unemployment numbers down. That is an untenable long-term solution, but he doesn’t care about that, as his real “laser like focus” is, and always has been, on getting himself re-elected.

BTW, I responded to DWS and asked her (1) why she thought the POTUS hired/fired police/teachers/firemen and (2) does she understand the difference between public sector & private sector jobs. I haven’t gotten a response, but my account that I tweeted her from @TheAngieNC2 was suspended last night, so I’ve been using my back up @TheAngieNC since then. I doubt she responded, but I did use my @TheAngieNC2 account to ask.

As I said in the second comment, spinmasters, appointed to this task. Good catch.
