Think Progress:

Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio Arrests 6-Year-Old Undocumented Immigrant

Joe Arpaio, the controversial Arizona Sheriff from Maricaopa County, arrested a 6-year-old undocumented immigrant on Friday. The move came the same day President Obama announced a new policy halting deportations for young undocumented immigrants.

The Arizona Republic has the story:

The girl was with 15 other people believed to be in the country illegally who were traveling to the Midwest and northeast United States, said Chris Hegstrom, spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office.

“She’s been turned over to ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) to try to determine where she’s from. She told us she’s from El Salvador. That’s what she told us,” he said.

The arrest took place Friday night at an undisclosed location in northern Maricopa County…

The sheriff said his deputies arresting child suspected of being an illegal immigrant the same day Obama implemented the policy is a coincidence. But if more illegal children enter the country after hearing about the new policy, Arpaio said it may not be by happenstance.

“Are we going to get more of these situations where illegals feel like now they’re going to be safe? I don’t know,” he said.

Immediately following the President’s announcement Arpaio told a local ABC affiliate that it would not impact his approach toward young undocumented immigrants. “They will still be arrested,” he said.

Arpaio is currently being sued by the Department of Justice for mulitple civil rights violations. He also admitted to using taxpayer resources to pursue an investigation into President Obama’s birth certificate, a widely debunked conspiracy theory.

That is the entire story published by Think Progress. Already we see that the headline isn’t accurate – Sheriff Arpaio didn’t make the arrest, his deputies did. The headline also neglects to mention the 15 other people that were arrested.

But here’s the rest of the story:

“It was part of a human-smuggling investigation that we’ve been investigating throughout the Valley,” Hegstrom said.

The whereabouts of the girl’s parents or other caretakers is unknown. All of the people traveling with her claimed to know nothing about the girl.

“Where was she going? What are they going to do with her? We’re trying to get to the bottom of this right now,” Sheriff Joe Arpaio said.

So what exactly should the deputies have done with her? Leave her by herself? The other alternative would have been Child Protective Services, but I’m not sure what the proper protocol is in a situation like this. Either way she would have been in custody.

But the real question is why did Think Progress not tell people the whole story?

BTW – The girl would not have been eligible for Obama’s new amnesty program anyway.

The other things I’m noticing are all the usual suspects (drooling for Obama media outlets) are all on the same page, talking about Romney’s lack of strong stance for or against Obama’s clusterf&*k, er, decision to not enforce certain laws. Clearly the whole arrangement of the campaign move of the other day is to try to get Romney to take the bait or be silent. Either way they talk about Romney instead of about Obama and this move.

So this mischaracterization of Arpaio and what happened here also fits within that campaign game plan. They’re all talking and they’re working together on this campaign effort.

Funny thing is, I think it’s already backfiring, like all their other campaign efforts so far. Amateurs.

I saw this headline develop in real time last night and had the exact same questions and problems you have with it. They’re just falling back on their stock characterization of Arpaio. But here’s what he actually had to say about it according to an actual news report from an Arizona press entity (as opposed to the cesspool that is ThinkProgress):

“We enforce the human-smuggling laws here,” Arpaio said. “Every chance I can get to take action on my own without turning them over to ICE, I do. Especially with the new policy the president has.”

They are deliberately portraying this as if mean old sherrif grabbed this child, clapped her in irons, and shoved her in a prison cell. Which is not what happened.

I agree with Dandy above – I think this constant hair on fire bullshit is backfiring.

I really hate it when people create this narrative in their head and then alter the news to fit their world view. That kind of ideological thinking where everything in the world is black and white, is why I was never a Republican. Lately it’s been the left that refuses to look at the complexity of issues and insists on reducing everything to talking points. It’s also an incredibly negative world view, I mean everybody is racist, mean, out to get you, greedy. They’re arresting six yr old girls and shooting innocent teen-agers on the street and killing the planet and trying to ban books! Just stop it already. This country is not as horrible as some people imagine.

the border patrol has been quiet for almost two years while congress has been trying to get holder to tell the truth on fast and furious. I think they have had enough of the bs and now speaking out
