Obama campaign mobile app reveals which of your neighbors are registered Dems

Just when you thought the Obama campaign couldn’t get any weirder, along comes its latest high-tech gift. Meet the Obama for America app for iPhone, a tool that allows you to spy on your neighbors to determine which of them are naughty (read: not Obama supporters) and which are nice. What you do with that information is entirely up to you.

The website ProPublica explains how the app works. The end-user types in his current location. The app returns a Google map of the area that flags households with one or more registered Democrats. Clicking on one of the blue flags reveals the first name, last initial, age, and gender of Democratic voters who live there. Not creepy at all.

ProPublica’s Lois Beckett notes that this information is publicly available and that canvassers for political campaigns have long had access to it. The question is why Obama for America thinks the average man on the street should have it at his fingertips.

Once upon a time anyone could stroll into a California DMV office with a license plate number and after paying a small fee they could get the name and address of the registered owner. Then a deranged stalker used it to get the address of a young actress who he then murdered.

There is a simple reason that voter registration and campaign donation information are public records – that’s what the law says. The law could easily be changed.

If the law gets changed it will be because somebody misused public records to harass and/or threaten people. Sooner or later, someone will.

I know Lola is working on another post so I thought I’d try in slip in ahead of her.

I find it really disturbing how more and more the instant anyone dares stick their head up for any reason they are immediately swarmed on by the media and blogosphere who use the internet to search for information.

    • bluestate says:

we need to have laws that give us more control over what gets published and archived on the internet about us, because it’s just all too easy nowadays to get that information. and then you have incidents like how abc news claimed a different jim holmes was the shooter.

  3. bluestate says:

so creeped out by this. glad i am no longer a registered dem!

    • myiq2xu says:

It bothers me that somebody can punch in my address and find out my name, if I’m registered, how I am registered, and whether I have donated to any candidates before.

It’s creepy. If I understand it right, OFA is pushing it as a neighbor-to-neighbor GOTV tactic. Yeah, that’ll work, because, you know, everybody needs one more pushy neighbor in their life.

There was one Obama yard sign in my large neighborhood. They put the sign up and their realtor told them they had to take it down because it made people not want to look at the house. The realtor told me this. She said people would pull up and then leave. No joke.

  5. Thumb this comment up if you think I should create a Crawdad Hole Facebook page. I’ll do it if this comments gets more than 10 thumbs up.

  8. Whaddya think?

    http://www.politico.com/blogs/burns-haberman/2012/08/paul-ryans-weekend-131130.html

The Paul Ryan-for-VP chatter has heated up in the past two days, thanks in part to him updating his Federal Election Commission filings for his PAC, suddenly canceling a planned appearance at an anti-Obamacare rally and winning praise from Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal as the best pick.

His aides have cautioned not to read too much into anything.

    • HELENK says:

He would be good, but he is needed in the Senate right now.

    • DM says:

A senior Romney adviser told the traveling press corp late last week that Romney still does not agree with the Medicare cuts in the Ryan budget, a fact that would be explored at length if the Wisconsin congressman were to be on the ticket. He would end up discussing that budget plan rather frequently, a fight Democrats would be eager for.

But for Republicans, there is a feeling that, if Romney went in that direction, he would be making the bold pick some in the party have urged him to.

I don’t believe Ryan is good pick. I’m still guessing that for LA Governor Jindal will be picked. The Deep South voted for Santorum. Romney doesn’t want right wing voters in states like VA to stay home. He needs that vote.

    • DandyTiger says:

I’ll be so bold as to say a Ryan pick would be certain defeat for Romney. The Ryan plan is the worst thing Republican’s have going. It’s the one thing that would actually unify Dems, including many Clinton Dems. Even as Ryan has been backing off some of the stuff in his initial plan, it’s the ultimate red meat for Dems.

Republicans that think Ryan would be a good pick are deep in the Republican bubble/echo chamber.

      • I have to agree. I was willing to give it a listen, but then I did some preliminary research this afternoon, and there’s a lot there I can’t stomach. Not only did he vote FOR TARP, he’s definitely got problems with Medicare, and there would go Florida.

NOW they are noticing Clinton Democrats from 2008 are not budging on The One. Many gave him a chance for some reason but not this time.

two things come to my mind when I read this article

when mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy

the other one is something an old time crew dispatcher taught me when calling a crew

they may screw you once, but you screw them back 5 times. do it legally (according to contract) and let them know when you do it.

We do have long memories and revenge is best served cold

backtrack considers another executive order. this time on cyber security.
just do not trust him enough

  11. Lulu says:

Obama is “angry” with Romney and his sick little aides think it is good. It motivates the slacker. He also supposedly had “respect” for McCain because he was a war hero. Bots are so full of bile. They live on it and gets them out of bed in the morning.
