Touré Neblett is a fucking idiot

Touré Neblett opens his mouth and removes all doubt:

[Paul Ryan] loves this line of ‘our rights come from God and nature’, which is so offensive to so much of America. Because for black people, hispanic people and women, our rights do not come from God or nature. They were not recognized by the natural order of America. They come from the government and from legislation that happens in relatively recent history in America. So that line just bothers me to my core.


I guess Touré’s not familiar with the work of Martin Luther King:

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.”


Gee Touré, if rights come from government then government can take them away, right? That would mean they aren’t “rights,” they are privileges.

Under our theory of God-given or “natural” rights, government does not create our rights, government is created to protect our rights.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.


I guess Touré skipped civics class too.

    He’s an idiot. What the abolitionists and civil rights activists and suffragettes fought for was not for govt to create and bestow some new rights that never existed.

    They fought for govt to stop denying them the rights that were naturally theirs. They understood that, clearly. Neblett doesn’t.

    But it makes many things make sense. He and those like him evidently think they have to suck a lot of govt cock, because geez, that’s the source of all their rights! No wonder they are so enamored of The State, and toady to it constantly. There are no rights that exist without The Boss Man bestowing them. Better suck up.

        If there were a nuclear holocaust tomorrow, and all govt ceased to exist, the rights of man would not cease to exist. It would be a hard slog to recreate the structure to enforce those rights, but the rights themselves do not go “poof” when govt does. They are still there, self-evident truths.

        Evidently they don’t teach this basic shit in schools anymore.

    So in countries where their govt does not bestow any rights, that must be okay with Neblett. Because rights are only rights if the govt says they are, correct? It’s not like they are a thing in themselves, a higher standard and authority ABOVE what the govt says.

      If his point is that government by the people tends to accrete more power and benefits to those who already have power and benefits and that those who have it dont really enjoy sharing it with newcomers, and that members of minority groups and more vulnerable groups (children, old people, and until relatively recently, women) may need legal reassurances and remedies to ensure they are treated equally by the powers that be and have equal access to the halls of power, well then . . . he’s right. Duh.

      Guess what? The founders of our country knew that. They designed our Constitution/Bill of Rights, our Congress, our 3 Branches the way they did for that very reason.

      Toure doesnt seem to understand that the Constitutional system that was put in place in 1789 has NEVER CHANGED. The govmt didnt one day wake up and realize women were also created equal. Women did.

        EXACTLY. The women, blacks, whatever didn’t say, “Hey, write us some rights!” They pointed to the words already in the Constitution and Bill of Rights and said, “That document right there? It includes us. Duh.”

    I disagree, the government will jail people for not being able to pay debts, will take away rights if they think a person is a danger, whether they are or are not. Women and african americans were never granted their freedom, people had to die for african americans to get their rights in this country, and women had to “suffer” to get their rights.

    The references to God are a form of manipulation. The law does not have to be fair, just enforced, that is what many believe in this country.

    Bahahahaha! I almost died laughing when I read that. Ask a Native American where their rights come from. I bet they won’t express gratitude towards our government for bestowing so many blessings upon them.

    Government is supposed to protect our God given or natural rights. And why do we need these protections? LOL, mostly because of government! It was government policy that allowed people to own slaves, it was government policy that prevented women from owning property or voting. Black people didn’t have to sit in the back of the bus because their neighbors might give them dirty looks, black people had to sit in the back of the bus because the government could arrest them if they didn’t! Oh sure, much later Rosa Parks was honored by the government for her work, but first the government arrested, detained, and tried her in a government court.
