I want to take a moment to extend my condolences to the families of Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three of his staff (names not released) who were killed by violent militant Islamic Libyans using guns and rocket-propelled grenades yesterday, on the 11th anniversary of September 11th. Mr. Stevens was newly appointed, just this January, and had only been in Libya for 4 months.
According to the Guardian:
An unconfirmed photograph posted on Facebook appears to show a mob dragging a lifeless Stevens along the ground, his shirt off. Some reports say he suffocated to death. Libya’s deputy prime minister, Mustafa Abushagur, said security forces have launched a manhunt to find the killers. “I condemn the cowardly act of attacking the US consulate and the killing of Mr Stevens,” he said.
The exact circumstances of the ambassador’s death remain unclear. On Tuesday night a group of extremists attacked the US consulate building in Benghazi, setting it on fire, and killing one US diplomatic officer. There are reports in Tripoli that Stevens was not killed in the Tuesday night assault, but was attacked by a second mob when he arrived in Benghazi early on Wednesday morning.
Open thread for chaos.
Update: Here is the unconfirmed photo. It sure looks like him. Mobs likes these are animals. Religion of Peace, yeah right. (Warning, graphic)
