RIP Ambassador Stevens

Ambassador Christopher Stevens killed yesterday in Libya

I want to take a moment to extend my condolences to the families of Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three of his staff (names not released) who were killed by violent militant Islamic Libyans using guns and rocket-propelled grenades yesterday, on the 11th anniversary of September 11th. Mr. Stevens was newly appointed, just this January, and had only been in Libya for 4 months.
According to the Guardian:

An unconfirmed photograph posted on Facebook appears to show a mob dragging a lifeless Stevens along the ground, his shirt off. Some reports say he suffocated to death. Libya’s deputy prime minister, Mustafa Abushagur, said security forces have launched a manhunt to find the killers. “I condemn the cowardly act of attacking the US consulate and the killing of Mr Stevens,” he said.

The exact circumstances of the ambassador’s death remain unclear. On Tuesday night a group of extremists attacked the US consulate building in Benghazi, setting it on fire, and killing one US diplomatic officer. There are reports in Tripoli that Stevens was not killed in the Tuesday night assault, but was attacked by a second mob when he arrived in Benghazi early on Wednesday morning.

Ambassador Stevens is the sixth Ambassador to be killed in the line of duty. Before yesterday, the last was Ambassador Adolph Dubs, in Afghanistan in 1979.

Open thread for chaos.

Update: Here is the unconfirmed photo. It sure looks like him. Mobs likes these are animals. Religion of Peace, yeah right. (Warning, graphic)

From the Guardian article, it says the Benghazi consulate was not well protected, unlike the embassy in Tripoli.
Weakness in like catnip to Al Qaeda.

One witness told the Guardian on Wednesday that a mob fired at least one rocket at the US consulate building in Benghazi and then stormed it, setting everything ablaze. “I was there about an hour ago. The place (US consulate) is totally destroyed, the whole building is on fire,” said Mohammed El Kish, a former press officer with the National Transitional Council, which handed power to an elected parliament last month. He added: “They stole a lot of things.”

Kish, who is from Benghazi, blamed the attack on hardline jihadists. He said locals in Benghazi were upset by the activities of Islamist groups and would revolt against them. He also said the US consulate was not well protected, unlike the fortified US embassy in the capital, Tripoli. “It wasn’t that much heavily guarded. In Tripoli the embassy is heavily guarded.”

Obama is a disgrace, the movie was out on JULY 2 , why were our embassies NOT DEFENDED ON SEPT 11?? NO security beef up ?? NO INTELLIGENCE ?? ( because we don’t get any thanks to drone attacks) but HOW MUCH INTELLIGENCE do you need not to beef up security in volatile parts of the world on 9/11?? More than Obama has obviously . The disgrace is the lack of security and the media spinning this crap and trying to deceive the American people . The media acts like traitors!

  31. tommy says:

This pi**es me off. This was our ambassador. He was not killed, but assasinated. Its a simple declaration of war. The O administration has really screwed it up. Jeez, this feeds into the repub narrative that dems are non-patriotic and can’t take strong action when needed, and that they try and appease the lunatic Islamists. I don’t want to hear ‘just words’ from this admin, I want to see concrete actions. The whole effing world is watching. If O approaches such an act with kids gloves, all the loony Islamists will rise up to further terrorise us. This is an acid test for American resolve, and so far, we have failed. On this issue, I’m with the far right. Till Clinton as POTUS, both repubs and dems have projected a tough face to the world. Now, the 2 strains within the dems (growing anti-semitism and appeasement of the muslims while castigating the Christians) has grown too powerful. Crap, for America, leading from behind will never work, just get our ambassodors killed. Don’t be a crazy gunslinger like GWB but have the intelligence of WJC. Thats in short supply in the democratic party. /rant off (with apologies to the moderators).

  37. tommy says:

The fact is that most americans don’t understand Islam and muslims. They analyse them as just another religion, but thats not true. I was born in an extremely orthodox muslim (arab) country and was raised there for 15 years. I know exactly how they are. By Gods’ grace, my folks emigrated to the U.S later on in life. Americans think rationally and logically. Muslims don’t. Yeah, you might criticize me for being Islamophobic, but thats due to my experiences. Was born in an arab muslim country, was a citizen of an asian country, and finally came to the U.S. Even today, I work with muslims all the time. Let me put it this way…..I’ve befriended atleast 1000 muslims in my lifetime, and only found 3 absolutely secular muslims. The rest are so steeped in and radicalised that they never expose their true face unless you get extremely close to them. A religion of peace? Nope, a religion of pieces. Yep, most of you would find it hard to accept my findings. But thats because you have a rational and logical mind, which most Islamists willfully ignore.

  38. leslie says:

All morning on my way to work (I’m at lunch now) I was thinking about these 9/11 attacks against US and then reflecting on Biden’s screaming out at the DNC: “Is Osama Bin Laden better off today ?!?!?”
Do they think the rest of the world is blind and deaf to the teevee coverage of these conventions or anything else that the administration says/does?
I feel like tweeting something about linking the attacks to Biden’s roars about Osama and the wonder that is TehOne. But I’m at work and will lose my job.

    For the love of fuck.”

    ( angienc @10:17)

    • angienc says:

Kerry’s the one who screamed the idiotic “Ask Osama Bin Laden if he’s better off then he was four years ago.” Biden keeps it to the simple “OBL is dead!”

So did Obama, Hillary and Cairo Embassy throw free speech under the bus for naught?

We still don’t even know what we don’t even know about these “spontaneous” eruptions that coincidently occurred on the 11th anniversary of Sept. 11. I’m going to hold my fire now till more is known.

That said, I believe that Romney’s response and actions in the last 24 hours have been appropriate and timely. If he said nothing he would be criticized and the press would have pressed him for a response. The fix is in as far as the press is concerned so Romney might as well just be himself and do what he feels he needs to do.

Personally I think he comes off as having a more Presidential demeanor than does Obama. It is BS to say Romney should have said nothing until Hillary, Valerie and Michelle dragged Obama’s arse out to the Rose garden to read his cue cards before he took his dog and donkey show on the road to Vegas.

    • gxm17 says:

So they’ve finally figured out that this was a planned attack? It was so clever of those protesters to bring along rocket launchers. Whodathunk!
