Judgment Error

Christian Science Monitor:

US says Libya attack was terrorism: Was it unprepared for Arab Spring fallout?

“What we do know is that the natural protests that arose because of the outrage over the video were used as an excuse by extremists to see if they can also directly harm US interests,” Obama said. “We don’t know yet,” he added, “and so we are going to continue to investigate this.”

The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the State Department have mounted investigations into the Benghazi attack.

The administration’s explanation of what happened in Benghazi marks a shift in its earlier assertions that the attack was spontaneous and showed no signs of preplanning. That position came under stiff criticism from a number of Republican leaders, including Sen. John McCain, who cast doubt on the “spontaneous” characterization because of the intensity of the attack and the heavy weaponry employed in it.

If only Mitt Romney hadn’t kept the media from reporting on this story they might have known sooner what some of us figured out right away. Most “spontaneous protests” don’t involve automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades. There are several reports that there never was a “protest” in Benghazi, it was a military-style assault from the beginning.

Some of you may recall that I was leery of the “Arab Spring” when it first happened. That region of the world hasn’t know peace and stability since the beginning of history. There are a lot of people over there who hate us. It is really naïve to think we could toss out a couple dictators and democracy and fluffy bunnies would magically appear.

It is unclear how much, if any, this will affect the election. What is obvious is that this was a screw-up. Exactly who is to blame has yet to be determined. At this point I’m not blaming Hillary Clinton but she’s not off the hook either. That’s what accountability is all about. But I don’t want her to be the fallguy for someone else either.

One thing I’m sure of – If Obama is reelected we will never know the truth. We may never find out the truth anyway.

Obama (Bush III) was just as prepared for Libya, as GW was after toppling Saddam.

  2. DailyPUMA says:

By blame, are you referring to who is to blame for the assassination of our own people who were there on peaceful terms?

  3. Mary says:

Re results: Gallup had Obama’s approval down to 46% yesterday (pre riots was 50-51) Today is 47%.

    Just sayin.

I think we already know the truth and we know who is to blame. We know our security was inadequate because people are dead. That’s the truth. We also know that leadership comes from the top and down and that ultimately the buck stops there.

So the truth is we screwed up because we have naive and inexperienced leadership and idealistic but unwise foreign policy positions that have left Americans and peace loving people in the ME more vulnerable than ever.

    • Constance says:

Very true we already know the truth and part of the reason we already know the truth is because we can easily read foreign media on line and they aren’t participating in the cover up. But Romney didn’t prevent the Corporate Media from reporting the truth. Media didn’t report the truth because they were fed lies by the Obama Administration and being dumber than a box of rocks they believed the lies and broadcast them. Media was also unable to prioritize what was an important story (Our ambassador assassinated on September 11 and three others murdered) and what was a bunch of meaningless BS (Romney off the cuff statement and the highly edited secret tape).

this is one of the best articles I have read on where we are today.

What’s his problem, that’s what I’d like to know. Is he just a coward who’s too afraid to do anything more than vote present or is his world view totally distorted by his upbringing? Or maybe he just doesn’t give a sh*t; wait a few weeks and one way or another things will sort themselves out. Let’s play a round of golf instead?

Whatever it is, he’s got to go. His lack of leadership has reached the point where people are getting killed, and the cover-ups just exacerbate everything.

Just fyi, I’m going to be off & on here for awhile. Major back & hip issues right now & sometimes it’s too painful to sit upright.

O/T, but its time for some positive vibes. Heres a heartwarming story : ‘Polish troops find a baby girl instead of IED in Afghanistan – At first, the passing soldiers checking a route in Afghanistan thought that they had come across an IED, but on closer look, they realised that inside a bundle on the roadside was an abandoned new-born baby girl, alive and wrapped in a towel. The Polish troops on patrol near their Waghez military base took the two-day-old to the medical centre at the base – and called her Pola, after the name of their country’.

Thanks tommy. I’ll be alright. Something’s causing the pain to flare & I have a feeling it’s my weight.

    • cj says:

WTH happened? This was supposed to nest under tommy lol.

    • DeniseVB says:

My husband had hip replacement surgery and the pain went away ! He was sorry he didn’t do it sooner, is that an option for you?

      • cj says:

I think it is Denise, the pain’s never been this bad before so I haven’t looked into that option. I’m going to look into it now though. This sucks.

        • DeniseVB says:

He put it off for so long trying all kinds of meds and injections to his hip joint, which just made him feel loopy. When the meds wore off, he seemed more painful. What made matters worse, the only exercise he could tolerate was bike riding, he fell off his bike and tore his rotator cuff. So that had to be repaired and fully recovered (8weeks) before they’d do his hip since he needed a walker and cane for a few weeks. Tough year, but worth it for him ! He’s pain free now 😀 Good luck to you and don’t let the idea of surgery scare you !

        • cj says:

Thanks Denise. I’m not afraid of surgery, I’m more concerned with the stories I’ve read about the hip replacement device being defective or wearing out. Forget the shots. After the last cortisone shot to my spine, I could barely get off the table & was dragging my left leg behind me for 6 weeks. Never went back.

    Andrew Malcolm:

So, there goes the president’s foreign policy standing. And he’s sure got no economic accomplishments to vaunt, even with a teleprompter.

Already, the Journal reports from Libya that for months hopeful Americans ignored numerous warnings of trouble in that lawless land from government and militia sources and followed shoddy security procedures. The Brits had already pulled out of Benghazi. For days the State Dept. didn’t even know what its admired ambassador was doing in Benghazi.

After a classified Thursday briefing from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Sen. Susan Collins said security in Libya was “woefully inadequate, given the security threat environment.” Rep. Buck McKeon, chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, added, “The story now has been changed. There was a planned, premeditated attack.”

The State Dept. is launching an Accountability Review Board to investigate. What do you bet its findings and the FBI’s will be unavailable before Nov. 6?

The Obama crowd regularly seeks to reap credit for its boss by, for instance, leaking details of the Bin Laden hit and counter-espionage operations, even when they’re actually British or Saudi. Now, some apparently are seeking to discredit the ambassador’s dead security team, who were former SEALs and not armed with the mortars and rocket-propelled grenade launchers that the spontaneously attacking video-protesters spontaneously produced.

    http://www.cnn.com/2012/09/22/world/africa/libya-ambassador-journal/index.html

after the attack, no one secured the scene. CNN got to scene and found ambassador’s journal.
Was there anything else there that our enemies could use?
Why was the scene not secured by the state dept???

    • cj says:

I know! How the hell did CNN get it’s hands on the journal? And why would they give it to his family and not the FBI?

    • DM says:

I expect an October with very bad news regarding the economy, but a failed president is usually a failure in domestic and foreign policies.

  16. myiq2xu says:

    Weakly Standard:

Wrong, wrong, wrong, and wrong. Intelligence officials understood immediately that the attacks took place on 9/11 for a reason. The ambassador, in a country that faces a growing al Qaeda threat, had virtually no security. The two contractors killed in the attacks were not part of the ambassador’s security detail, and there were not, in fact, “many other colleagues” working security with them.

The nature of the attack itself, a four-hour battle that took place in two waves, indicated some level of planning. “The idea that this criminal and cowardly act was a spontaneous protest that just spun out of control is completely unfounded and preposterous,” Libyan president Mohammad el-Megarif told National Public Radio. When a reporter asked Senator Carl Levin, one of the most partisan Democrats in the upper chamber, if the attack was planned, Levin said it was. “I think there’s evidence of that. There’s been evidence of that,” he responded, adding: “The attack looked like it was planned and premeditated, sure.” Levin made his comments after a briefing from Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta.

Representative Adam Smith, a Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, agreed. “This was not just a mob that got out of hand. Mobs don’t come in and attack, guns blazing. I think that there is a growing consensus it was preplanned.” And according to CNN, Undersecretary of State Patrick Kennedy “has said that the attack appeared to be planned because it was so extensive and because of the ‘proliferation’ of small and medium weapons at the scene.” Not only was the attack planned, it appears there was no protest at all. Citing eyewitnesses, CBS News reported late last week: “There was never an anti-American protest outside the consulate.”

So we are left with this: Four Americans were killed in a premeditated terrorist attack on the eleventh anniversary of 9/11, and for more than a week the Obama administration misled the country about what happened.

    This isn’t just a problem. It’s a scandal.
