Meet Mitt Romney’s Garbage Man

No, seriously.

Are You Kidding Me? Romney’s Garbage Man Blasts Him In New Political Ad

A new anti-Mitt Romney ad from the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees features Richard Hayes, the garbageman who deals with the Romneys’ trash at their oceanfront mansion in La Jolla, California.

Dubbed by AFSCME as one of the “people who make America happen,” Hayes talks about his laborious job, and criticizes the GOP nominee for not caring about the government-dependent “47 percent” of voters who the candidate believes won’t vote for him anyway:

“My name is Richard Hayes, and I pick up Mitt Romney’s trash. We’re kind of like the invisible people. He doesn’t realize that the service we provide — if it wasn’t for us, it would be a big health issue, us not picking up trash.

“Residents do come out and shake our hands. Sometimes they give us hugs and thank us for the job we’re doing, hand us water and Gatorades. Tell us we’re doing a good job and keep up the good work. Picking up 15, 16 tons by hand, that takes a toll on your body. When I’m 55, 60 years old, I know my body’s gonna be break down [sic]. Mitt Romney doesn’t care about that.”

Gee Richard, how much do you make as a municipal employee down there in La Jolla? Do you have a college degree in waste management? How old will you be when you retire and how much will you get each month? Do you actually pick up the trash or does the truck do the heavy lifting for you? Are you planning on getting disability at age 55? Cuz it sure sounds like it.

This is horseshit.

    “Mitt Romney doesn’t recycle!!!”

    • And dang it, he doesn’t hand out free Gatorade. Fucker.

      • Lulu says:

Isn’t the LaJolla home a vacation home. Are they ever there? If they are never there how much trash does he have to pick up from an empty house? Do the Romney’s still have to pay for trash pick-up when they are not there and not generating garbage? Does the city get paid when they are not in residence? Does Richard only get paid for occupied houses? How many empty vacation homes are on his route which seldom have garbage put out? I would think that LaJolla is making a profit off the Romneys to pay for Richards salary and bennies.

And horseshit is actually a very useful product.

    • votermom says:

“He wears white after labor day!”

      • ARE YOU EFFING SERIOUS?!1? Stop the train! This is where I get off. I can put up with a lot, but that’s just going too far. OBAMA2012! Because white is just raycist any time of year. / s

    • mcnorman says:

Or Mitt doesn’t overfills his cans. WTF does this guy want? Hugs? A kiss?

Has the asshat forgotten that this is HIS job? It entails staying fit. I guess he doesn’t think he will become a supervisor when he becomes older, right?

    • carol haka says:

I bet he actually tries to slip aluminum foil and styrofoam in the recycle. And geez, what’s with all the target plastic bags? 👿

  3. myiq2xu says:

I always give my garbage man a hug.

  4. HELENK says:

I don’t even know my garbage man. he does not get out of the truck and is by my house so fast , I do not even get a chance to say “Hi”

    • myiq2xu says:

Where I live you have to have your garbage separated into one of three bins (trash, recyclables and brush/lawn clippings) and the bins have to be out by the curb by 6am on pick-up day.

The guys that drive the trucks are unionized government employees and they make pretty good money and benefits.

    • mcnorman says:

Well, I almost got creamed by the garbage truck, does that count as saying bye?

  5. Really jumped the shark here. Or should I say, jumped the garbage truck?

  6. DM says:

I wouldn’t touch and definitely would not hug my garbage man. People waiting outside the house to give that turd a Gatorade at 5 am? LOL

    • Mary says:

      $109,553????? Good grief.

    • britgirls says:

Whaaaat? Everything’s gone mad today. Seriously they make that much???

    • votermom says:

Do they make the money by selling celebrity trash to the tabloids?

    • DeniseVB says:

Last I read, NYC trash collectors made more than the NYPD and FDNY, wonder how many trash guys lost their lives on 9-11 ?

Funny story, when my daughter opened her business in Brooklyn, she had to go to a private “waste management” company which charges her $400/mo for 2x wk pickup. She told me, I just signed up with Tony Soprano’s company !

  7. britgirls says:

You gotta be fucking kidding me!!! When’s the last time ANYONE hugged their garbage man??? My garbage collector better not be getting any ideas … Totally absurd.

  8. myiq2xu says:

How Much Does a Garbage Man Make?

“Garbage men,” are listed under the more appropriate title of “refuse and recyclable material collectors” in the Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH). According to OOH, there were 129,080 refuse and recyclable material collectors in the U.S. in 2008 and their earnings were relatively low. However, waste material collectors earned, on average nationwide, more than any state’s minimum hourly wage and in the highest-paying state collectors earned an average of $22.64 per hour. Overall, the nature of the job and the relatively low wages invite frequent turnover, so job openings are plentiful (www.bls.gov/OCO).

Dumbest ad evah! Does it have its own hastag yet, that’s what I want to know?

I am Michelle 0’s wig maker. You cannot imagine………

    • britgirls says:

OMG … I just read that on Mediaite and I nearly wept. So fricking funny. This is so silly. I’m looking forward to reading many more snarky replies. 😀

  10. myiq2xu says:

“One day I gathered trash as a garbage collector. I stood on that little platform at the back of the truck, holding on as the driver navigated his way through the narrow streets of Boston. As we pulled up to traffic lights, I noticed that the shoppers and businesspeople who were standing only a few feet from me didn’t even see me. It was as if I was invisible. Perhaps it was because a lot of us don’t think garbage men are worthy of notice; I disagree – anyone who works that hard deserves our respect.”

    – Mitt Romney

  11. Oh good grief. No trash collection out here in bitter clinger land. We take our recyclables to the town collection bins by the post office (the yellow jackets were vicious this morning over there) we compost the garbage and burn the rest. yes, we still burn trash out here in bitter clinger land. Damn us and our carbon footprints lol.
I could pay a ridiculous amount of money to have Waste management come get it. Nope, I don’t think I will. The only bad part is the cat litter- but we pitch that down the woodchuck holes out in the field. So even used cat litter gets recycled here.

  12. HELENK says:

    excuse me while I rant

some stupid ass just ran a gate in a big rig in front of a passenger train. train hit him and derailed. over 30 injured. so far they say just minor and no deaths.

THE GATES AND THE LIGHTS ARE THERE FOR A PURPOSE.

    HOW VALUABLE IS YOUR LIFE.
IT TAKES LESS THAT A MINUTE FOR A SIX CAR TRAIN TO GET ACROSS A STREET CROSSING.
ISN’T YOUR LIFE WORTH ONE MINUTE

BECAUSE SOME FOOL THINKS HE IS TOO IMPORTANT TO WAIT LOOK HOW MUCH DAMAGE IS DONE. HOW MANY LIVES AFFECTED.

I REALLY HATE TRESPASSERS THAT RUN GATES OR LIGHTS

    END OF RANT

    • votermom says:

That’s awful. And I totally agree with your rant.

      • HELENK says:

I used to get reports on incidents like this from all over the country.
after awhile you just can not have any sympathy for the stupid.
I have known engineers and fireman that were killed just because some ass thought they were too important to wait.
I am sorry if I sound crazy but it does get to me

        • myiq2xu says:

What I hate are the people who commit suicide by jumping in front of trains. Can you imagine the traumatic effect on the train crew?

        • HELENK says:

          Myiq
have sat in my office with and engineer who was crying I saw her face and I could not stop the train.

One incident the body was stuck on the front of the engine cooking from the heat of the engine

one of the worse ones for me was a women who jumped in front a train and her son was the conductor the next train. The conductor has to stay with the body until the police come. she wanted to commit suicide by jumping in front of her son’s train.

If I seem to have no sympathy for this people, I am sorry
I am sorry that anyone’s life is so bad that they feel they have to end it. but take a pill , do not make someone who does not know you or that you know have to live with your death

We had an incident where two little kids were killed because mom was drugged out of her mind and dad was in jail and the kids got out and were playing on the track. Dad sued the railroad and the engineer personally

        • HELENK says:

part of my job was to sometimes ride up on the engine with the engineer. you would not believe how people just do not get it .
a train takes almost one half mile to stop, longer if it is a freight train.
walking near a track while a train is going by, you can get pulled under the wheels if you are too close.
I was on the headend going to San Diego when three idiots decided to play chicken. with the train. They laid their heads on the track as the train was coming. I still do not know how we missed them. I had nightmares for weeks

    • DeniseVB says:

Helen, I’m such a railfan, I love all things train ! We even respect the gates for our local zoo train, which goes 4 miles an hour.

When I hear about gate runners, that causes death and injuries, I get pi**ed off too. Semi’s should follow school bus rules, come to a full stop at every crossing.

    • myiq2xu says:

Actually, the article says the truck hit the train. Just FYI, that area is flat as a pancake, the roads are straight as arrows and there is no visibility problem. If you look at the picture there are no trees nearby.

All RR crossings in California have lights and mechanical crossing arms that block the road. You either have to stop, slow down to drive around them or plow through them.

      • HELENK says:

they just have too many drivers just as in other states that think they are too important to wait.

        BTW
Amtrak has a program where someone will go to schools and businesses and talk about railroad safety. There are a lot of trucking companies that could use that talk.

    • myiq2xu says:

According to the local news station there were TWO truck/train accidents in Hanford today. The second one was a freight train, no other info yet.

    • myiq2xu says:

This is a situation where the truck had to stop on the tracks and couldn’t get started again.

No one was injured, but that’s always a dangerous situation. I NEVER stop on the tracks.

      • HELENK says:

see how long it takes that train to stop. The engineer was hitting the brakes before hit the truck and it still took that long

sometime we get sarcastic and say
the train will be through that crossing in less then one minute, with you or without you.

remember in case of ties the train wins

        • HELENK says:

          we also have funny ones
have you ever seen the trucks that move houses? we had one up in Washington State. Had all the paperwork was being escorted by the Washington State police. forgot to notify the railroad to get track and time,( it gives you right of way and the part of the track were you are is protected by the dispatcher and no train can enter). We had a late train. The house became a split level with a detached garage. The engineer’s railroad name is now home wrecker. the truck driver got a DUI arrest. I can laugh because no one was hurt. that does not happen often

          • myiq2xu says:

I know a guy who got spun out on crystal meth and was arrested for throwing his bicycle at an Amtrak train. He was angry and ranting when they busted him but none of what he was saying made sense. I asked him afterward why he did it but he couldn’t (or wouldn’t) explain it.

He got his picture in the paper though.

          • myiq2xu says:

Totally destroyed the bike. It looked like it had been shredded.

        • Karma says:

Here is some video that makes your point of how long it took the train to stop after the impact. There is some stills at the bottom of the page as well as overhead helicopter within the video.

And personally, I like the insider info you provide about the rails. Thanks Helen for all you do. 🙂
