Lazy Saturday Open Thread

My daughter sent me photographic proof that Michigan has turned to gold, or at least the trees have. Apparently Autumn has arrived back east.

I told her it’s still Summer out here in Big Smoggy. The trees are still green and it’s sunny and warm during the day.

The Giants and Reds play this evening in the first game of a best-of-five divisional playoff series.

What’s up in your part of the world?

My daughter told her husband she wanted a romantic weekend away from the kids. So he took her camping.

What’s romantic about pretending you’re homeless?

I got a vacuum cleaner once for an anniversary. I got a new car the next year.

While I used to like to camp, lately I agree with Elliesdad. Camping is checking into a hotel that doesn’t have room service.

The army cured me of camping. Hiking and backpacking too.

I’ve hiked and camped on a good portion of the Appalachian Trail and beach bummed in the Virgin Islands when I was a Girl Scout leader for a troop of teenagers, but when we had our reunion (the “girls” are in their 30’s and 40’s), we rented an inn in Savannah for the weekend.

I like to watch people go camping on tv, then get eaten by mythical monsters. Which is why my kid calls me, “the bloodthirsty audience.”

We rented an RV once. I had to cook and he had to take care of a piece of heavy equipment. It was just like home only smaller and noisier.

My idea of roughing it is being dropped at a discount mall armed only with a wallet full of credit cards. 😀

I really love to go camping, but not without kids. You need to bring them so you have somebody to haul firewood, set up the tent, and get you another beer.

      • elliesmom says:

My Scout troop used to heat water on the campfire so I could soak my feet after a long day of hiking.

    Obama unfiltered:

Do you think Barack Obama knows who Ernie Banks is? Count me a skeptic. The purported White Sox fanatic couldn’t name a single player for the home team on the South Side, so I doubt he knows Wrigley Field from his beloved “Cominskey Field.” But even if the president was never gripped by the Cub slugger’s infectious calling card — “Let’s play two today!” — he has now heard the Mitt Romney version: “It’s fun, isn’t it?”

That’s how the GOP nominee bucked up a befuddled Jim Lehrer during Wednesday night’s ground-shifting debate. It was only 20 minutes in, but the moderator was fretting over the clock while the president fretted over Romney. Already, the challenger had the incumbent reminding 70 million viewers of “Bad Bad Leroy Brown,” the last Chicago legend in his own mind to emerge from a decisive brawl looking like a jigsaw puzzle with a couple of pieces gone.

Romney has dramatically improved his standing at the RCP average. Not yet caught up to Captain Dick as yet. Should hopefully happen in the next couple of days.

Here in SouthEast Michigan many of the trees are green yet, some are turning, and some have turned. Some oaks have begun turning before the masses of maples and other trees whereas usually the oaks
turn later than most of the other trees. Sign of stress from the drought?

    Giants, you got to change
