Open Thread: “America”

Good morning ! So how far have we come ? Fun little clip from West Side Story tells me not far at all. (Rita Moreno and George Chakiris won Oscars playing Anita and Bernardo, and the movie won the big enchilada of Best Picture).

Eisenhower was still president when this movie was made, and now Puerto Rico may become our 51st state. My next clip will probably be “The Rumble” 😀

We just need to get to 2014. Waiting on Palin/Tea Party Marching orders. Calling Boehner and telling him if he funds that bullshit Obamacare, it will be renamed BoehnerCare. 👿

      • DeniseVB says:

Our local Tea Party is divided now. One faction supported Virgile Goode for Pres and the other was behind Romney. Also it’s supposed to be a nonpartisan movement and they’re harping on Christian conservative “Republican” values. Big turn off to most of us who escaped the duopoly to find common ground.

And to think, I thought the common ground was getting rid of the empty chair for a potted plant ? Then go from there 😉

        • ME says:

Are you kidding? I’m a Christian and I would never join the Constitution Party. What are these tea party people expecting? What ever it is they aren’t going to get it from the GOP or the Democrats.

It’s a timeless story inspired by Romeo and Juliet which certainly reflected the hate and bigotry of the 50’s. It’s seems to be where Obama is taking us back to. Can you imagine an update …. the daugher of Democrats falls for the son of Republicans ? Powerful 😉

        • elliesmom says:

I know that story. They got married anyway, and they lived happily ever after. Along the way, their parents discovered they liked each other. She gave up her high paying job to teach inner city kids, and he stuffed the bank account so they could retire at 61. Worked out fine. 😉

        • leslie says:

Sweet story, elliesmom. I know your story from following you all this time. I’m happy for you both. 😉

The new movie is due out at Christmas time. Can’t wait, either. I saw previews Saturday.

  2. The same old- some looking to the bright beautiful opportunity that is America. Some doing nothing but whining and complaining about how awful things are here and how great the “homeland” is.
Well if it is so damn great back home- buh bye. Don’t let the door hit you in the ass.
Not sure I will ever get it. My grandparents came here and were damn grateful for whatever work they could get. Nana went to work in the mills in Andover. Perhaps my great grandparents were not thrilled with their daughters working in the mills- but everyone did what they could to survive. Never once heard any of my grandparents talk about how great things were in the Auld Country. And they certainly were not saving up to go back.

    • DeniseVB says:

My daughter’s in-laws escaped some revolution in Central America where the dad was a wealthy bank president and lived the fine life. They traded that to bring their 4 kids to the US and lived in a cramped NYC one bedroom for years as he worked many jobs to provide for them. They’re doing fine now, will never be as wealthy as they were, but it brought tears to my eyes when they told me freedom is priceless. Their government took everything from them …. because they could.

Probably why immigrants are some of the most patriotic people I know.

      • Those who lost everything are so grateful to be here.
I have issues with those who come here with the sole intention of sucking up benefits and sending everything back home. I have even bigger issues with those who come here and bitch that things are not like they are back home. (Think proponents of Sharia)
As for those asshats that want to wave the flag for their home country and sue to have the American Flag suppressed? Don’t even get me started.
Come here to BE AMERICAN. Learn English.
Nobody offered special classes in the native tongue to our grandparents. And they assimilated, which was a good thing.

      • leslie says:

The people I know who were the biggest supporters of Romney, were the eastern European (Ukraine, Russia, Latvia, Poland) immigrants. There are several women that were very quietly supporting Romney until they learned I was supporting him as well. Then they talked openly about how, since Bronco became pResident, they have seen this country become more and more like the countries they left. They are just as sad and concerned as I am about our future.

A neighbor of mine who also knows these same women claims that the reason these women were voting for Romney was because they are mercinary and greedy and want to collect more and more material goods (jewelry, clothes, etc). Of course my neighbor is in a union and gets really upset with me when I disparage the union where I work. She is so defensive of her union, that I think she must be on the payroll. And it’s all about money with her. She obviously doesn’t see how she is projecting.

        • AniEm says:

Had several ESL students who supported Hillary over Obama in the primary. One man from South America was particularly passionate and anti O.

Then, on the other hand, a state employee told me she plugged in a SSN for health care and eight different names were attached to it. How in the hell do people come here and learn to game the system?

        • Somebody says:

Leslie we have a pretty large group of immigrants from old soviet block countries in my area. Same experience here, they were quietly supporting Romney.

Matters not that type of argument is lost on the vast majority of our youth. We can blame the education system, but as parents we have ultimate responsibility for our children. Every parent should take the time to read their child’s text books, especially their history text.

        • elliesmom says:

There are people here who sell bogus ids to illegal immigrants and charge them money to help them game the system in other ways. Once someone in the family learns how it’s done, they teach the others. My daughter and her husband had both of their cars totaled last year by a guy plowing their neighbors’ driveway. When they tried to file a claim against the driver of the plow, the truck was registered to someone who lived in a nursing home and had no idea she “owned” a snowplow. The driver, of course, was nowhere to be found.

      • DeniseVB says:

Really ! If you’re the wife of a General, you’ve worked a lot harder than Michelle to get him there. MO tends to leave earlier for her vacays, and the cost of flying her separately a few hours or a few days ahead of BO costs us how much?

I heard Medved explaining his pov on his show the other day – he may be right.

    • DeniseVB says:

Negative ads make voters hate voting for either candidate because they’re so “stupid” and “evil”. We all know Obama won his earlier elections by finding dirt on his opponents. Nice guy, huh? He didn’t even have to accomplish anything, as a candidate OR President.

    • angienc says:

As it was designed to and as the MSM helped convince people too by saying over & over “both sides do it” when that was bullshit because (1) a Romney ad that pointed out that Obama didn’t keep his 2008 campaign promises (and other “record-based” ads) is NOT a “negative” ad in the same way that an Obama ad saying “Romney’s not the solution. He’s the problem” or “Romney: Not One of US” etc, etc is and (2) the sheer volume of the Team Obama negative ads compared to the allegedly negative Team Romney ones makes a huge difference as well, especially when the MSM reinforced the messages by rarely or lightly disputing them and by running particular stories. For example,Harry Reid gets on the floor of the Senate & accuses Romney of not having paid taxes in 10 years because some guy told him — the MSM had a field day repeating that claim (and justified it by saying the Pres. of the Senate *said* it); TeamObama accused Romney of being a felon, something she & everyone in the MSM knows not to be true as they understand what those SEC docs mean — but the average Joe doesn’t. So what does the MSM do? It starts saying things like “the meaning of the SEC docs aren’t clear”– bullshit! Furthermore, when Romney quite reasonably & WITHOUT WHINING states that kind of accusation is “beneath the office of the presidency” and that Obama should fire the person who said it & apologize he, what was the story — “Romney whined for an apology! Man up!” (Megan Kelly actually did a baby/crying voice mocking Romney). After the 1st debate TeamObama said over & over on every news show that Romney is a liar & he stood there & lied for 90 minutes and not once did any one on those channels say “Give a specific example of when he lied” — they just allowed the “Romney’s a liar” message be reinforced.
Seriously you can look at every day of this race going back to April & find instances of this bullshit from the MSM all designed to make sure that the public didn’t know the truth about Romney to help suppress the vote by making people who were disappointed in Obama and might otherwise consider Romney disgusted with the whole process. But that’s the way the MSM operates– they trumpet every positive achievement by Obama no matter how irrelevant or trivial and downplay or ignore every failure no matter how far-reaching and serious while they operate under the exact opposite paradigm for Romney.
Romney handled these unfounded, vicious attacks & unfair coverage in the MSM with grace & dignity — everyone paying attention saw that he was the one who looked and acted like a POTUS while Obama acted like a punk, which is why the left is acting so pissed off still even though they got the “win” — they realize that Obama isn’t the better man. But what’s pissing me off now is those on the right trying to blame Romney for the loss — he was a much better candidate then the GOP deserved.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — Popular U.S. pizza chain Papa John’s faces a $250 million class-action lawsuit for blasting customers with illegal text messages.

Oyler, however, said that Papa John’s sees “no basis” for the plaintiff’s estimate of $250 million.

The nationwide class-action case was certified on Nov. 9 by U.S. District Court Judge John Coughenour in Seattle. Papa John’s plans to appeal the judge’s ruling, Oyler said.

Krauthammer: White House “Held Affair Over Petraeus’s Head” For Favorable Testimony On Benghazi Prior To Election…

Krauthammer’s analyis. DP wanted to keep his job and tried to
preserve it by lying about Benghazzi and toeing the party line explanation.

Once the (s)election was safely in the pos’s hands – oh, around 5 pm Tuesday Nov. 6, he immediately became dispensable and the long knives came out.

    Fool.

CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER: I think the really shocking news today was that General Petraeus thought and hoped he could keep his job. He thought that it might and it would be kept secret, and that he could stay in his position. I think what that tells us is really important. It meant that he understood that the FBI obviously knew what was going on. He was hoping that those administration officials would not disclose what had happened, and therefore hoping that he would keep his job. And that meant that he understood that his job, his reputation, his legacy, his whole celebrated life was in the hands of the administration, and he expected they would protect him by keeping it quiet.

And that brings us to the ultimate issue, and that is his testimony on September 13. That’s the thing that connects the two scandals, and that’s the only thing that makes the sex scandal relevant. Otherwise it would be an exercise in sensationalism and voyeurism and nothing else. The reason it’s important is here’s a man who knows the administration holds his fate in its hands, and he gives testimony completely at variance with what the Secretary of Defense had said the day before, at variance with what he’d heard from his station chief in Tripoli, and with everything that we had heard. Was he influenced by the fact that he knew his fate was held by people within the administration at that time?

Of course it was being held over Petraeus’s head, and the sword was lowered on Election Day. You don’t have to be a cynic to see that as the ultimate in cynicism. As long as they needed him to give the administration line to quote Bill, everybody was silent. And as soon as the election’s over, as soon as he can be dispensed with, the sword drops and he’s destroyed. I mean, can you imagine what it’s like to be on that pressure and to think it didn’t distort or at least in some way unconsciously influence his testimony? That’s hard to believe.
