Painting Depicts Obama as Crucified Christ

A painting that features President Obama posed as Jesus Christ crucified on is on display at a community college art gallery in Boston.

The painting by Michael D’Antuono is part of a larger exhibit called “Artists on the Stump – the Road to the White House 2012.” It’s on display at the Bunker Hill Community College Art Gallery until Dec. 15th.

The painting is called “Truth” – and shows the president with his arms outstretched. A crown of thorns rests on his head.

It was originally supposed to debut nearly four years ago at New York City’s Union Square. But that event was cancelled due to public outrage.

“I always regretted cancelling my exhibit in New York because I feel my First Amendment rights should override someone’s hurt feelings,” D’Antuono told Fox News. “We should celebrate the fact that we live in a country where we are given the freedom to express ourselves.”

A spokesperson for the art gallery told Fox News there hasn’t been any criticism of the painting.

D’Antuono said the public exhibition “has afforded me the ability to right a wrong.”

He dismissed critics who called the display blasphemous.

“The crucifixion of the president was meant metaphorically,” he told Fox News. “My intent was not to compare him to Jesus.”

D’Antuono blamed the controversy on conservative media “trying to promote the idea that liberals believe the president to literally be our savior.”

Me, personally? I’m not offended. This is one of those things I don’t have to mock, all I have to do is point and say “See?”

But I do understand why some people would be offended. I was raised in a fundamentalist Christian church that would consider that painting to be blasphemous. But blasphemy is protected by the First Amendment. That’s why I find it ironic that the painting depicts the man who said “The future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam“.

Somehow I doubt that Michael D’Antuono needs to worry about the FBI coming to his house and taking him to prison for blasphemy.

BTW – D’Antuono is dead wrong as far as what some liberals believe about Obama.

It is very cult-like and creepy. The blind and unquestioning adoration is fascist. I’m looking forward to Bronco telling people they are supposed to starve and live in a hovel for his greater glory. Most of them will balk when he starts doing that which is coming up in the next couple of years. They can have a government provided phone which enriches his friends but the masses can live on 800 calories a day for their lord and savior (medieval “lords” kept the serfs safe but starved them at the same time and the church cults kept them terrified and passive). I really wish these pin head Bronco-bots weren’t so historically illiterate.

And it’s not just the vile progs, that’s what’s so depressing. Fast & furious? Yawn. A cowardly CIC who watches 4 Americans die in Libya in real time then flies off to Vegas in the morning & lies his ass off? zzzzzzzzzzzzz

He *will* start to suck medicare dry to pay for Obamacare…will that finally be the last straw? I’ll have to see it to believe it.

    Hee, hee …..

For those who remember Pi$$ Jesus which was called art, and the lefties loved it 🙂

    • yttik says:

I don’t understand “art.” I’ve seen some beautiful work from people who live on the edge of poverty and never get any recognition. Then I have seen the utmost pieces of crap, praised and sold for thousands of dollars. WTH??

Currently our galleries have such prizes as “Orange Circle on Black Canvas,” which is exactly that. We currently have a very prestigious artist who glues rocks to pieces of two by fours, as if he is making great social commentary. Then people talk about how brilliant he is and the message is trying to convey to the world. I think the message he conveys is, many people are completely nuts.

      • lyn5 says:

For me art is food. I love beautiful landscapes, but I also love portraits that aren’t pretty. I do not understand tying sticks together and calling it art.

      • DeniseVB says:

Forgot her name, but saw a “performance” artist at MoMA which consisted of sitting at a table across from anyone who wanted to be stared at by the artist. I think I enjoyed the people watching this with their deep art appreciation looks more. A guard asked me to leave because I couldn’t stop laughing. I’m a hopeless cultural #fail. 😀

        • angienc says:

Ha, ha! I saw a clip of that “artist” on the internet when she was doing that “performance”– don’t worry, if I had been there I would have been asked to leave with you!

          Bringing culture to TCH 😉

        • insanelysane says:

How preposterous to ask you to leave. No freedom to laugh?

Maybe your laughter was part of the art!
Good lordy, they are so pretentious. Blech!

        • lyn5 says:

Your laughing was part of the artistic experience. I wonder if Marina gave the guard a look that made him throw you out. I too would have been giggling.

O/T. I’ve been pondering bout McCains reaction to Rice. What I do know is that McCain is possibly the most honorable person in politics today. He doesn’t just give lip-service to the word ‘honor’ like most other pols do, he lives it. And hes not a partisan wingnut. Unlike what lefty blogs claim, hes not racist (his adoption of a bangladeshi girl proves it), hes not a sexist (his admiration for HRC and her muslim aide who got castigated by other pubs prove it), hes not a teabagger (hes not associated with the tea party at all) and hes not a sore loser (jeez, it been 4 years already. If he wanted to be one, he could have done it in 2009). IMO, the pub wingnuts hate him more than their prog counterparts. He and others gave Rice a chance to clarify. But if hes still not convinced, that tells me that he knows that Rice is still lying. Keep in mind that hes a foreign policy expert. Hes knows most world leaders, and he would have his sources in Libya too. He ofcourse respects the office of the Presidency, and as Rice is a BHO appointee as U.N ambassador, he won’t just come out and say it. And consider that SofS is a very important position for international relations. This worries me. With Holder at Justice, and with Rice as SofS, we’ll get screwed both nationally and internationally. To McCain, this is not a game of appointing BHO loyalists. Its very serious, and the person has to be seriously qualified for the position of SofS. He’d probably heartily support Kerry, though the pub wingnuts hate Kerry more than Rice. IMO, if McCain thinks that Rice isn’t qualified, she just isn’t. Thats my 2 cents.

WTF? Obama and Romney to have lunch tomorrow at the White House? And no press allowed. WTF is going on?

    • insanelysane says:

Obama just wants to suck up all Romney’s good ideas and insight and then claim it as his own. Even O knows Romney understands the economy better than Obama or any of Obama’s lackey advisers.

    • angienc says:

It’s a PR for Obama so he can pretend to care about “unity” — nothing more. He met with McCain too and then at the first “public” meeting with Congress about the stimulus, dismissed McCain after he offered some suggestions with “the election is over.”

Yeah, asshat — the election was over, and you “won” but McCain was still a US Senator & you weren’t elected king.

this was one of the first thing I saw this AM.
way back in the dark ages when I was in school, we were taught to be very vigilant that it is very easy to lose rights through not paying attention to what our government does. It is our duty as a citizen to be awake and aware.
What i see happening today, is everything I was taught could happen by misinformation, indoctrination instead of education and citizens just not paying attention. It does sadden me because so many sacrifices were made by so many to try and keep this from happening.

sometime today I will find a “just because” to make me feel better.

  10. HELENK says:

this is not a just because.
somebody better come up with some kind of plan or we are screwed

  12. Constance says:

My first glace at the picture brought up a memory of an image of Nixon similarly posed that is commonly used in stories about Nixon. I thought it was illustrating some sort of connection between Nixon and Obama.

But I do find it odd that the Left seem to look to politicians the same way normal people look to religion if they need it. All the good and evil right and wrong crap. Both parties are corrupt and they are both organizations of mostly men seeking power for themselves and have no concept of the common good.

  13. angienc says:

FTR — I find the painting offensive.

I’m not going to storm any embassies or anything, but yeah, it’s offensive. Mainly it offends me how stupid & hypocritical people are, but it offends me on religious grounds too.

    • It offends me because it doesn’t even look like a *painting* rather one of those digitized things.

    • Jadzia says:

As a believing Catholic (living in a town too small to have more than a few church services a year), I am offended, but only because of the stoooopid. Number 1, B0 isn’t dead. Number 2, does anybody with half a brain actually think that he would suffer a hangnail, much less crucifixion, for the benefit of anybody besides himself?

I could go on but it’s late here and I am fighting some horrible French bug.

    • Mt.Laurel says:

I find it offensive because these same hypocrites make fun of those those who actually practice their faith (unless it is the theocracy of much of the ME). I am not a churchy person but I found it appalling that Biden was given a pass on Catholicism because he uses it solely for window dressing/as a prop and Ryan was persecuted for actually following the tenants of his faith.

I notice that the figure is holding back curtains. This is just another performance and curtain call by the actor formerly known as Barry Sorento. This whole gang has no more belief in Christ the Savior than the man in the moon.

    • Erica says:

here’s what I wrote when someone posted the picture 4 or 5 posts ago:

I rarely get riled up about pop culture references to religion, but that picture of him really bothers me. Newflash obots: Obama is not Jesus, he’s not been crucified, he doesn’t love the poor, and he doesn’t belong to the truth.

  16. Finally broke through writer’s block. Kinda goes with this post, too.

    • HELENK says:

In a comment I read today backtrack and his followers are like david koresh or jim jones or even charles manson. they are a cult that does not end well.
whether or not you are religious following a man ( any man) blindly is just sick. you give yourself away to someone else’s will and that is never good.
I do not know of any president in the history of this country that was considered a god. Do not know of any that wanted to be.

this worries me, fewer and fewer will stand up for the rights that the founders wanted for us.

  17. John Denney says:

The word “blasphemy” gets tossed around, but what does it really mean? “To revile”

So I don’t think the painting is blasphemous. Idolatrous, perhaps, but not blasphemous. Although the president does have a lot of blasphemy directed at him.

    • yttik says:

“Although the president does have a lot of blasphemy directed at him”

This makes no sense unless we are declaring Obama to be God? You can’t blasphemy against an ordinary person.

“Blasphemy- A contemptuous or profane act, utterance, or writing concerning God or a sacred entity.”Obama is not God and he is certainly not sacred.

      • Somebody says:

John true it is more idolatrous than anything. Technically speaking blasphemy is in the eye of the beholder. By that I mean, depicting someone with a crown of thorns, being crucified other than Christ would be considered blasphemy to a Christian……but probably not to a Muslim or Scientologist. So you have a valid point.

However, I part ways with you when you claim Obama has had blasphemy directed at him……because that would indicate that Obama is a god and he’s NOT.

      • John Denney says:

The definition from the link I provided is the original meaning, which is not specific to deity or the holy. For instance, Titus 3:2 says, “… speak evil of no man…”. It could have been translated, “blaspheme no man”, since the Greek word is identical to the one translated elsewhere as “blaspheme”.

    • angienc says:

The word “blasphemy” gets tossed around, but what does it really mean?
Although the president does have a lot of blasphemy directed at him.

      Physician heal thyself.*

Or, since you’re obviously a complete & total dumbass (and thus unable to understand how the proverb applies in this situation): before you start lecturing others on the meaning of a word, you should know what that word means yourself.

*Coincidentally, that’s a biblical proverb from Luke 4:23.

      • John Denney says:

Titus 3:2 says, “…speak evil of no man”. It could as well have been translated, “blaspheme no man”, since the Greek word used is identical to the one translated as “blaspheme” elsewhere in the New Testament.

The English word “blaspheme” derives from that Greek word. But I concede that by common usage it is no longer used as a synonym for “slander”, but is reserved for religious purposes.

        • angienc says:

Oh, you’ll “concede” that after you did your little google search?

I happen to be Greek and the New Testament is written in Ancient Greek (which is really very different from modern Greek) but I do happen to have knowledge of the language & I’m telling you point blank that the root word/Ancient Greek word for blasphemy ALWAYS carried the meaning of impious — you can’t be impious against things that are NOT sacred. So the “common usage” fig leaf you’re trying to cover yourself with now is bullshit.

A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing, bub — anyone who needs to *concede* that the word blasphemy only applies to disrespect toward religious things really needs to STFU.

        • John Denney says:

angienc, so then what is your take on that phrase in Titus 3:2?

          • myiq2xu says:

Texas veterans file lawsuit against union pacifc and smith trucking for crossing accident that killed 7.

the gates and lights were working as intended per NTSB.

there is a term called track and time where the trucking company could have called the railroad dispatcher and requested that all trains be kept from entering that territory for the time it took both trucks to get across. this apparently did not happen.

    example of this
on the Pasadena sub when they are building the floats for the rose parade the dispatcher is contacted and stops trains from entering.

this crossing accident breaks my heart because it did not have to happen
