Weakly Standard:
Kerry: Obama Offered Me the Job a Week Before Susan Rice Pulled Out
John Kerry says that President Obama offered him the secretary of state job a week before Susan Rice publicly pulled out of the running for the job.
“He called me, actually a week before Susan got out of the thing,” Kerry tells the Boston Globe. “He called me and said, ‘You’re my choice. I want you to do this.’ He asked me to keep it quiet. I did. I sat on it.”
At the time, Rice pulling out of the running for the top State Department job suggested that the position had simply fallen to Kerry, who had been in a neck-and-neck competition for the job. Now it seems that the White House allowed Susan Rice, the ambassador to the United Nations, to publicly save face by publicly withdrawing from a job that was never going to be offered to her in the first place.
As I said at the time, I don’t recall any official announcement that Susan Rice was the nominee to replace Hillary. But they didn’t do this just so she could save face. Here’s what Obama said back then:
Today, I spoke to Ambassador Susan Rice, and accepted her decision to remove her name from consideration for Secretary of State. For two decades, Susan has proven to be an extraordinarily capable, patriotic, and passionate public servant. As my Ambassador to the United Nations, she plays an indispensable role in advancing America’s interests. Already, she has secured international support for sanctions against Iran and North Korea, worked to protect the people of Libya, helped achieve an independent South Sudan, stood up for Israel’s security and legitimacy, and served as an advocate for UN reform and the human rights of all people. I am grateful that Susan will continue to serve as our Ambassador at the United Nations and a key member of my cabinet and national security team, carrying her work forward on all of these and other issues. I have every confidence that Susan has limitless capability to serve our country now and in the years to come, and know that I will continue to rely on her as an advisor and friend. While I deeply regret the unfair and misleading attacks on Susan Rice in recent weeks, her decision demonstrates the strength of her character, and an admirable commitment to rise above the politics of the moment to put our national interests first. The American people can be proud to have a public servant of her caliber and character representing our country.
You might recall that the professional feminists were in high dudgeon mode over how those evil sexist Republicans were picking on Rice because she was a girl. Obama threw her to the wolves then tried to get some mileage off her getting eaten.
For the record – Susan Rice deserved the criticism she received. She gave out misinformation about what took place in Benghazi. She was either a dupe or a willing tool. If the American people had been told the truth it could have changed the outcome of the election.
All true except for your last sentence — the only change to the outcome of the election would have been the cover stories on how Obama was “re-elected.”
Absolutely! Assumes facts not in evidence. Like voters favoring O actually knew or cared about anything other than unicorn poop.
OT — Oh, look — the Romney campaign quietly, and without fan fare, donated $90,000 to the Red Cross after Hurricane Sandy. I hate to link to Politico, but they seem to be the only one with the story.
Fucking Romney.

The wisdom of the ages as filtered and passed down from on high by Algore Incorporated. What’s not to love?
But isn’t “progressive ideals” an oxymoron?
So why is Kerry blabbing about it now ? Ego getting in the way of people thinking he was second choice? Gee, thanks for setting the record straight Secretary Kerry.
We all knew Susan’s name was being floated out there for the theater games Obama likes to play. Didn’t he come to her defense as a stern “father-like” figure ? I think that’s what the feminists got upset about, his defending the poor, helpless girl in trouble.
Two celebrities just lost on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire because they picked Mother Teresa and the right answer was Hillary Clinton.
The question was who has been Gallup’s “most admired woman” a record 16 times?
duh, that’s a no-brainer!
I knew that. 🙂
lets see this guy just got a job where diplomacy is a requirement.
he opens his big mouth to inflate his own ego. Diplomatic much?
my thoughts exactly, HELENK
It’s really insulting to think that there are people who actually believe that Kerry, Biden, Holder, etc, are all more competent than anything the other gender has to offer. It’s like, “ewww, you’re a girl, I think I’ll nominate this brain dead ketchup king.” Or Chuck Hagel who not only says he isn’t qualified, but suggests he’ll learn about what the job is once he gets it.
It wouldn’t be so bad if women were competing against highly skilled and experienced candidates, but we’re not. To add insult to injury, we can’t even get on the playing field with the corrupt and moronic.
We were right. I knew Susan Rice was a smokescreen. He never even nominated her.
Kerry’s almost as good a choice as Hagen. Rice was used, abused and put away wet.
well, I never got past the fact that Rice got her big break from Bill Clinton and was the first person out in front against Hillary. What she got was karmic retribution…..
She’s super rich too. I don’t feel one bit sorry for her. Just a good example of what asswipes the Obama cabal are.
I keep waiting for Axelrod to get his karma for being a Hillary backstabber.
Oh, it’s coming. Check out his profile. Dude has Tim Russert written all over him. You’ll forgive me if I dance on his grave when it happens.
I forgive you , only if you let me dance with you , but I would also settle for some kind of agony of defeat for him as well .
backtrack owes him money. and we know backtrack is bad pay
Obama and the Democrat Party only want a few women in government so they will have scapegoats available.
Trophy-appointments.
It’s the Obama way. CNS reported earlier today that the IRS is estimating the cheapest, lowest tier health insurance for a family of four would be $20,000 per year. Within two hours, ThinkProgress, an official arm of the Obama campaign, had a headline shreiking that “Republicans just catch on that health care is expensive” or some such nonsense. Nevermind that NO ONE in America has EVER paid $20,000 a year for CHEAP insurance, but there you have it. Igor whats-his-face had spin and he pushed it.
