Washington Examiner:

Victory: White House, Holder give Rand Paul the ‘no’ answer he wanted

Attorney General Eric Holder wrote Sen. Rand Paul,R-Ky., to confirm that President Obama does not have the authority to kill an American on U.S. soil in a non-combat situation, Obama’s spokesman announced today.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney quoted from the letter that Holder sent to Paul today. “Does the president have the authority to use a weaponized drone to kill an American not engaged in combat on an American soil,” Holder wrote, per Carney. “The answer is no.”

Carney added that, “if the United States were under attack, there were an imminent threat,” the president has the authority to protect the country from that assault.

Rand Paul just made himself very relevant. Reach-across-both-sides-of-the-aisle-to-get-things-done relevant.

All the 2016 candidates should be scared… I’m certainly giving him a solid looksee.

It’s great that a response was forced, but Holder is still weaseling. He reworded Paul’s question as “not engaged in combat”, not “no imminent threat”.

“Engaged in combat” can mean any fucking thing they want it to mean. Is someone *planning* an act “engaged in combat”?

Yayyy! It’s so refreshing to see someone in congress actually “work.” I’d love to see more filibusters! It sure beats the partisan bickering followed by another week long recess.

for all those who think that Rand Paul’s filibuster was unnecessary, a little bit of history. never be sure that it can not happen here

  18. kanaughty says:

ok, that’s it, i have never heard any politician understand and respect the constitution (and the checks and balances of government) the way rand paul did yesterday… so he is so far getting my vote in 2016…

he also impressed me because he pressed the point that the constitution was about protecting american citizens rights not protecting government officials rights (like presidents thinking they are above the law). he kept stating that the founders specifically found the presidency to not be a monarchy that the reason why america was founded was to get away from the will of a king over any law…

there aren’t many in the government who are like this so when i finally see it, i am so damned impressed. he knows what the hell he is talking about and i think he would respect the office of president and work across the aisle if he was elected… anyhoo, that’s my thoughts…

In addition to everything else Rand Paul did , he also gave the populace a serious lesson in Civics , and how this government , can and is supposed to work . What is not to love . If I were smart I would be selling Rand Paul Filibuster T Shirts ! I bet someone is .

well it seems that the younger republicans coming in are growing big ones and that scares the hell out of some of the older ones as well as the democrats

Wowza — just caught Paul’s reaction to the letter on Fox:

Hooray! For 13 hours yesterday I asked that question. Under duress, and under public humiliation, the White House will relent and do the right thing.

Of course, this is a letter from the same guy who wrote a letter last year stating his office new nothing about the Fast & Furious program and he *still* didn’t state use of drones against US citizens on US soil was UNCONSTITUTIONAL, so color me unimpressed.
