Environmentalists to news networks: cover climate change more, skeptics less

Invoking news coverage of recent extreme weather events, environmentalists are urging the public to sign a petition to pressure major television networks to do more coverage of climate change.

The petition, by the League of Conservation Voters, is aimed at executive producers of nightly news programs for major broadcast networks — ABC, CBS, and NBC — who the groups say don’t focus enough news coverage on climate change issues and, when they do cover the issue, portray the issue as a “two-sided debate” by featuring climate skeptics.

“What’s almost worse is that when these networks have covered global warming, they have often treated climate change as a ‘two-sided debate’ rather than what it really is: an issue in which there is overwhelming scientific consensus,” writes Vanessa Kritzer, online campaigns manager for the League of Conservation Voters.

“By bringing on climate-denying politicians and pundits, and giving them as much ‘expert’ status as actual climate scientists, the networks perpetuate the false debate that polluter-funded think tanks have instigated to cast doubt on whether we should take action to address the climate crisis at all.”

This is classic Vile Proggery. “I have the right of free speech. You have the right to STFU!”

That certainly makes it a lot easier to win arguments. Besides, it’s different when we do it.

  1. Did you see how they walked back global warming/climate change again? Now it’s “climate disruption.” That ought to be broad enough to cover everything under the sun. Heh.

I love the “overwhelming scientific consensus” thing. Wasn’t there overwhelming scientific consensus at one time that the earth was flat? No? Guess I am wrong again.

My mom’s hero. (She grew up in McFarland.) We got him to come speak at UChicago back in the day and she actually came all the way to the South Side just to meet him. I think it may have been one of the happiest days of her life. He could not have been kinder or more gracious to her.

If global warming/cooling/change/disruption really is “science,” then it should be able to stand up to vigorous debate. If we’re being asked to “just believe,” then we’re in the realm of religion, not science.

Also, the “science of consensus” cracks me up. Is this how we prove theories these days, just take a survey? According to our polls, the scientific consensus is that the Earth is flat….

    • Exactly. It’s a 2,000+ year old logical fallacy to judge by consensus. Notably, it’s also one of the favored modern advertising/marketing techniques, where it goes by the name “bandwagon appeal.”

      • myiq2xu says:

If global warming is real then it will become self-evident. So far that self-evident proof is lacking.

I have no problem believing humans impact the environment. I do have a problem believing only the things that have been political incorrect so long have caused such vast but unmeasurable harm. Too transparently convenient, IMO.

    Hell Cat Needs A Home:

My friend asked me if I wanted a cat a few months ago, I told her no and then came home to find that she had trapped it in between my windows with a bag of cat food and a litter box. She is very much crazy, she scratches my furniture to hell, bites me when I try to pet her, but follows me to bed every night. She likes to go outside but then when she wants back in, she climbs on my screen door and hangs there ans meows till I let her in. She is ruining all my shit, I really dont want to take her to the shelter, but I dont want her, didnt ask for her and figure maybe some kind of cat whisperer is out there and just maybe there is a small chance someone would take her before she very likely meets her death at the pound. If you think this cat is the one for you, please please please let me know! I hate her, but there is someone out there for every animal, right? But we arent a match and my friend is a real asshole.

Scared shitless I’d say. Similar to the reactions immediately after Palin was introduced. They howl, they throw stones, they scream and stomp their feet. Then they put all their effort into destroying the threat. What else are they going to do, have ideas, debate, talk policy?
