An Ironic And Sad Anniversary

Today the Boston Police are searching the Watertown district for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. Eighteen years ago on this day the police and firefighters in Oklahoma City were digging through the rubble of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. A man named Timothy McVeigh loaded a Ryder truck with barrels filled with ammonium nitrate and fuel oil, rigged it to explode and parked it in front of the building. When his truck bomb detonated it killed 168 people, including 19 children.

McVeigh was executed in 2001.

I have been to the Oklahoma City Memorial. Nowadays it is a beautiful and serene place. Eighteen years ago it was a scene of horror. It wasn’t the worst terrorist attack in our history, nor was it the last. Each atrocity is a reminder that freedom isn’t free.

Some libs are making an effort to explain how if they used guns, there would be a lot more dead. WTF?

    • myiq2xu says:

      Can you smell the desperation?

      • DandyTiger says:

Yeah. Their fantasy of a compete totalitarian state didn’t go as planned.

      • DandyTiger says:

I’m afraid to check our former colleagues sites. Are they confronting the reality of who the bombers are? Are they having meltdowns. Maybe they’re pretending like they never spewed insanity a couple of days ago.

I saw Treacher going after Twitfeed Markos for covering Arkansas politics today. I think the left has given up and looking for other shiny objects to blame republicans for 😀

        • Worth a hoot in the comments: “Jeez, sounds like a lot of average Americans need lessons in basic logic and syllogisms.
Not all Muslims are terrorists. Not all brown people are muslims. Some caucasians are both muslim and terrorists. All kinds of combinations possible. For all we know, these caucasian, muslim terrorist US permanent residents were pissed off about gun control.
          No one knows yet.”

          emphasis mine

The little girl in that picture was Baylee Almon. She was born on April 18th 1994. She died on April 19th 1995.

If there is a God then Timothy McVeigh burns in Hell.

    • DeniseVB says:

That photo won a Pulitzer. I think the death penalty was too easy on McVeigh, we need to create prisons where the convicted can watch non-stop coverage of their crime and trial 24/7. Too cruel?

      • HELENK says:

no the sickos might like it. they should be locked in a dark cell with nothing but the screams of their victims piped in 24 hours a day

      • 49erDweet (D) says:

I favor taking advantage of the benefits afforded by Monsano and have them develop for our exclusive use a special breed of super-stinging fire ants which we may then hourly dump 500 of the critters into solitary pits containing the humanoids we’ve so convicted. This goes on 24/7. The ants will comprise their total sustenance,
If 500 is too many, and we find death occurs too soon, say earlier than 50 year, we can always cut back on the number released till we find the perfect balance.

On NPR today, once they knew who the real people were, were all talking about how nice they were, and how some of the NPR correspondents knew the younger brother and how he came to some of their parties. Seriously, they went on about how great and nice he was, and what great potential. And maybe they’re right. If it’s caught, he can be a professor in 20 years.

Of course, Lenin’s birthday is on the 22nd.

Oh crap, tomorrow, Columbine’s anniversary. What a sucky week 😦

    • fif says:

These two remind me of the Columbine killers. They are not “professional” jihadists (at least it doesn’t appear they are linked to any organized group), and they were absorbed in their own insane violent fantasy. The mind can be a dangerous place to live.

      • DeniseVB says:

And brothers, apparently gifted, athletic and talented too. The mind boggles how they could learn to hate so much to drive them to the organized insanity of killing innocent people.

Would Obama’s gun control laws prevented this? Nope, but I bet many Boston residents wished they had guns right now.

This report was also floating around during the wee hours. The only problem is another scenario has big bro dropping off little bro during the chase, where he promptly made leg bail – hence the search for him today. So one or the other is probably not correct.

  18. HELENK says:

can you remember before backtrack when there was ever so much hate between Americans? I do not. There were differences in ideas which were discussed. The msm seemed giddy with the idea that it was a white American who did this in Boston. Why?
Today is the anniversary of the Oklahoma bombing another horrible day for this country. I do not ever remember any American called McVeigh and his buddies heroes. There was total contempt and anger at what they did. Both sides the left and the right were united in anger at McVeigh.
Why and how did that change?

When this sort of horror happens in April, I always expect the killers to be homegrown. I was wrong.

David Kowalski, on April 19, 2013 at 12:45 pm said:

Only partly, Sue. These men have been in the US since 2000. The younger was aged 6 when he came over; the older aged 13. Both had US schooling. Allegedly, neither felt welcome. They weren’t home bred but to some extent they were home “grown.” No wonder investigators said that this had some of the marks of a domestic job and some of a foreign terrorist attack.

This sounds like something from the 1890s or early 1900′s when immigrants were occasionally violent or anarchistic. Leon Czolgolsz, an unemployed immigrant who had lost his job in the Panic of 1893, shot and killed President McKinley in 1901. A few other violent acts from the era were also evident. Like today, it was a long period of sharp economic downturn with what Krugman called the Long Recession (1973-1898 ending with five years of real double digit unemployment. Corporations and big money were totally in the driver’s seat (Robber Barons) and screwing everybody else and Congress was pretty openly for sale (Mark Twain wrote at the time that it was a time when everyone had his price, generally low).

Until we know what drove these men, we won’t know enough. The McKinley assassination created a wave of xenophobia. It also accidentally placed Theodore Roosevelt, a reformer, into the Presidency. Who knows what this will do?

Randy, on April 19, 2013 at 4:35 pm said:

One thing it wasn’t was right-wing.

BTW – Czolgolsz murdered McKinley 3 years after the Long Recession ended. He was an anarchist/socialist, just like most of the Occupy activists.

    • yttik22 says:

The media is reporting that these two did not rob the 711. So that means there was a random naked dude and some robbers running around, all at the same time.

It would be kind of a trip if these two got caught because they had the misfortune of going into a 711 that was being investigated for a robbery and were seen on the video because the cops were trying to identify the robbers.

      • 49erDweet (D) says:

I think RNG was apprehended fully clothed with an attitude, smart mouth and lousy self control, and was then stripped in full view of God and everybody to ensure he was not otherwise armed, then re-clothed and photographed. As I recall. But that was ten years ago, now.

It was never an armed robbery at the 7-11, I thought. It was a carjack outside and the subsequent activity associated with that crime. But I could be wrong.

Lots of rumors and partial reports floating around last night. And switching around of numbers for the suspects. It was fun!!!!!

Tsarneav’s Twitter account provided clues about the suspected bomber’s political views. On November 6th, he retweeted several statements suggesting a preference for President Obama over Republican candidate Mitt Romney.

He retweeted a statement from President Obama’s Organizing for Action account that said: “This happened because of you. Thank you,” in reference to Obama’s victory.

He also retweeted a statement and a picture making fun of Romney. The Tweet said: “WTF Romney is winning ??” and linked to this image.

Now, tonight, might be the best possible time to send in bomb-sniffing AND tracking dogs and a crew to forensically retrace his steps, back to last night’s shoot out scene, collecting all available trace evidence before its further compromised or destroyed by weather or human overprinting. Such a learning opportunity is so rare as to make this location and scene temporarily invaluable. But I’m skeptical.
