Politics over science: Selling Plan B to 15 year olds

Via yahoo

WASHINGTON (AP) — In a surprise twist to the decade-plus effort to ease access to morning-after pills, the government is lowering the age limit to 15 for one brand — Plan B One-Step — and will let it be sold over the counter.
Today, Plan B and its generic competition are sold behind pharmacy counters, and people must prove they’re 17 or older to buy the emergency contraception without a prescription. A federal judge had ordered an end to those sales restrictions by next Monday.
But Tuesday, the Food and Drug Administration approved a different approach: Plan B could sit on drugstore shelves next to condoms, spermicides or other women’s health products — but to make the purchase, buyers must prove they’re 15 or older at the cash register.

But not next to Sudafed. Because people might buy Sudafed to commit drug crimes, but will never buy Plan B to cover up statutory rape or sexual abuse.
Also, “surprise twist”? FDA succumbs to intersection of current admin politics & Pharma lobby. Yeah, I’m so surprised.

The FDA said the Plan B One-Step will be packaged with a product code that prompts the cashier to verify a customer’s age. Anyone who can’t provide such proof as a driver’s license, birth certificate or passport wouldn’t be allowed to complete the purchase. In most states, driver’s licenses, the most common form of identification, are issued at age 16.

How long will that be implemented? I’m sure it will be seen as an undue burden on 15 year olds who can’t afford ID. And are only girls/women allowed to buy it? Of course not.

The FDA said Tuesday that Teva had provided data proving that girls as young as 15 could understand how Plan B works and use it properly, without the involvement of a health care provider. Teva plans to conduct a consumer-education program and indicated it is willing to audit whether stores are following the age requirement, the agency said.

Just laughing at that paragraph. So much comedy.

Bonus:
From the Manufacturer-supplied full product information:

Ectopic pregnancies account for approximately 2% of all reported pregnancies. Up to 10% of pregnancies reported in clinical studies of routine use of progestin- only contraceptives are ectopic. A history of ectopic pregnancy is not a contraindication to use of this emergency contraceptive method. Healthcare providers, however, should consider the possibility of an ectopic pregnancy in women who become pregnant or complain of lower abdominal pain after taking Plan B One-Step. A follow-up physical or pelvic examination is recommended if there is any doubt concerning the general health or pregnancy status of any woman after taking Plan B One-Step.

I wonder if that will be in Teva’s educational program.

I had a bunch of tweeted rants on this topic this morning, but lucky for y’all, Twitter seems to be glitchy, so I won’t list them here.

Re: carding of minors. In CA and probably other states ID cards can be issued at almost any age. IS got his at 14 – along with eventual DL# that gets him strange looks every time he’s ticketed. 🙂

      • votermom says:

Kids can get ID at any age; but most don’t have it.
Plan B needs to be taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex to take effect; maximum wait is 72 hours.
So it makes no sense to me that the 15yo kid who is too unprepared for sex will have id.

        • 49erDweet says:

Agreed. Highly unlikely those needing ID worst will have one.

        • DeniseVB says:

If kids can get ID’s at any age, why can’t voters? 😉

        • 49erDweet (D) says:

{belated} Aamf in CA the app for DL/ID is ipso facto also a voter reg app. BUT requirements for CA/ID are tougher than voter reg so fraud in CA runs high. That’s why CA does not issue same day, so they can withhold mail backs that can’t clear.

  2. Someone posted about this on facebook yesterday, and actually blamed the patriarchy for limiting it to women 15 years and older. As if normalizing teenagers having sex under the age of consent isn’t itself evidence of the patriarchy. WTF? My response was this:

Only for very young minors. They are cutting it off at age 15, which IMO is too low and under the age of consent in most states. It should be 16, which is the AoC on most states, and ensures that a girl has the proper i.d. to get it. There are very serious side effects with this drug, and it should only be used in emergencies for that reason. We don’t know the long term effects of overuse. I can only imagine some 13 year old in a bad situation using it every time she has sex or is coerced into it (which happens A LOT). That would be a disaster. I have no problem with this ruling, I just wish the cut off was a tad older. I’m sorry, but I don’t think a 14 year has the right to be coerced into sex,and no I don’t think she is old enough to make that decision for herself.

  3. HELENK says:

my main fear with this is if one of these girls has an allergic reaction and parents do not know she has taken the pill will she get proper medical help in time?
will she even realize it is a reaction to the pill?

teenage girls do not always tell there parents many things. I can cite at least two cases where girls I knew did not tell their parents they were pregnant. One went into labor before her parents knew and the other was just about 8 months along. neither one got the prenatal care they should have gotten because of keeping quiet

    • votermom says:

      Yup.
Its the immature ones who tend to get pregnant – the responsible ones know enough to either abstain or use condoms.
So they are also too immature to realize that they can’t just hide it forever.

  4. Somebody says:

A 15 year old can take this, but you have to be 18 to buy cigarettes. Bloomers wants to make it 21 for cigarettes. Flipping sinus medicines are behind the pharmacy counter, but not this…..argh

  5. myiq2xu says:

Preventing minors from obtaining birth control and/or abortions won’t prevent them from having sex.

OTOH it’s tough to get them to use BC even when it is easily available.

    • myiq2xu says:

I still remember the first time I bought condoms. I was 16 or 17 and still a virgin. Back then they were kept behind the counter and you had to ask for them. I was really embarrassed cuz the clerk was a woman.

      • Lulu says:

When I was in high school one of my oldest friends (from first grade) was too embarrassed to buy any. I marched up to the front of the drug store and asked for some condoms. The lady said “What kind”. I said “Extra small”. He then chased me around the parking lot while I was laughing. Somehow we are still good friends.

    • Constance says:

Take the young girl into her Dr, Tell him you caught her 14 yr old male “friend” climbing OUT of her bedroom window at 4 am on a school night. Get the BC pills and give them to the girl who denies needing them because she “isn’t a slut” but tell her they are “hormone correction pills for the purpose of curing acne”. I bet she will take them as directed without a fuss.

  6. myiq2xu says:

BTW – When I worked for a big-box retailer two of our highest theft items were condoms and pregnancy test kits. I’m sure if Plan B was out there in the aisles it would join them at the top of the list.

Sex Superbug Could Be ‘Worse Than AIDS’

An antibiotic-resistant strain of gonorrhea—now considered a superbug—has some analysts saying that the bacteria’s effects could match those of AIDS.

“This might be a lot worse than AIDS in the short run because the bacteria is more aggressive and will affect more people quickly,” said Alan Christianson, a doctor of naturopathic medicine.

Even though nearly 30 million people have died from AIDS related causes worldwide, Christianson believes the effect of the gonorrhea bacteria is more direct.

“Getting gonorrhea from this strain might put someone into septic shock and death in a matter of days,” Christianson said. “This is very dangerous.”

Hard to believe she made the People mag Most Beautiful issue.

      • myiq2xu says:

I don’t want to seem mean but there really is nothing that attractive about MO and she is downright ugly when she scowls. I’m not saying she’s hideous (I’ve dated worse, but not while sober) but she ain’t no beauty or fashion icon.

She’s basically a tall, average-looking middle-aged woman with poor taste in clothes. She does not have the hips, butt and thighs to dress young and skinny.

Too be fair, neither do I.

      • foxyladi14 says:

She is a fashion Icon ya know. 😆 😆

      • mcnorman says:

Don’t they pay to get that? I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a fund for that.

      • Constance says:

The whole idiocy of it is they dress MO up in fashion and feature her in Vogue to sell her to women and women don’t care about fashion and don’t read Vogue. Do you know even one person who subscribes to it? I occasionally look at it when I’m getting my hair done but I read about 10 “womens mags” then because they are so vapid it takes 5 mins a mag. The only time I read People or US was in the orthodontist office and thank God I am finished with that phase of my life.

    • elliesmom says:

I can give her that her taste and mine in clothes are very different, but at what she pays for her clothes, they should at least fit her.

      • Somebody says:

I think her clothes don’t fit because if it fits on the bottom, it doesn’t on the top. It seems she buys clothes to fit her upper body and then they end up being too tight on her lower body.

I don’t know why she doesn’t spend the money to have things altered. She’s worn some outfits that did seem to fit her and I assume those were altered.

The poor smucks that work and pay taxes to carry these loads were not there

    • Lulu says:

My daughter said that sitting behind her in a bar in Austin were some anarchists. They were talking about the bombing in some way. They had on dirty clothes, had Stonewall Jackson beards, and were drinking single malt. Her boyfriend is a starving engineering grad student and they were drinking dollar longnecks. She said they both wanted to beat them up.

      • HELENK says:

That’s just sad. Parents and health care providers aren’t all mean prudes, they’re usually wiser and more experienced when it comes to your health. That’s why we give them 15 yr olds to look after.

  20. John Denney says:
