Taylor Swift’s Big Night

Taylor Swift set a new record last night by making her “totally surprised” face eight times at the Billboard Music Awards.

Taylor Swift Dominates Billboard Music Awards With 8 Wins

Taylor Swift’s night at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas was a success. She led all artists at the Sunday night ceremony with eight wins, including top artist and top Billboard 200 album, for “Red.”

During her top artist acceptance speech, Swift thanked her fans for making her music about her crazy emotions the soundtrack to their own crazy emotions. She added that her relationship with her fans was the longest and best relationship she’s ever had.

Swift found out she won the top Billboard 200 album category when fans in the mosh pit held up smartphones that spelled out the album title in big letters. She said, “I’m really happy about this” and went on to thank her fans for the “magical” award.

Swift also delivered one of the more memorable performances of the night, singing her hit “22″ in an elaborate production that began backstage and featured several dancers, a bicycle ride and plenty of red balloons.

Rihanna and Gotye each received four awards. Several artists, including Justin Bieber, picked up three.
Bieber made a bid for musical relevance while accepting the first-ever Milestone Award for musical ingenuity and innovation. During his acceptance speech, Justin took the opportunity to address all the tabloid headlines saying, “I’m 19 years old. I think I’m doing a pretty good job, and basically, from my heart, it should be about the music and the craft that I’m making it.”

Bieber added, “This is not a gimmick. I’m an artist, and I should be taken seriously, and all this bull should not be spoken of.”

Keep it real, Beebs. You rock the “not even old enough to be jailbait demographic”.

If you never heard of the Billboard Music Awards before, join the club. Apparently a few years back some people decided that the Grammys, People’s Choice, MTV and VH-1 awards just weren’t adequate so they invented another meaningless award so they could hold another annual awards show.

The reason for Taylor’s complete domination of the awards? They are based on sales, and “Red” was the big seller of the year.

Beebs is heading down the Whacko Jacko path. Some bizzarro behavior this past year 😦 Some adults need to intervene, but guess they’re too busy making money off of him to put him in time-out.

My 10-yr-old twin granddaughters are way past their Belieber phase. 😀

“Bieber made a bid for musical relevance while accepting the first-ever Milestone Award for musical ingenuity and innovation…”

Say what??! On what planet does Bieber have ingenuity and innovation? Relevance?

They have got to be kidding.

I hope this didn’t win any awards OH. MY. (NSFW and auto-start) Vid at link….

  6. FYI: Unless there’s a big news story today, I’m planning a Book Club post this evening. Dirty Words on Clean Skin, if anyone wants to get their copy out. I’m posting on it this week and next.

  7. See where VA will be spending about $40K per sign for almost 100 civil war era cemetery signs. I have a former neighbor now living in PA who could do the same job even if you knocked off two zeros. http://bit.ly/14ondh1

Just saw Robert Gibbs on MSNBC , talking about immigration reform , and he seems to think that once we have “immigration reform ” the Republican Party will be relegated to not much more than an asterisk in American politics . I am paraphrasing , but he basically said Lindsey Graham and other Republicans can have all the hissy fits they want over Benghazi and other scandals , it really won’t matter once immigration reform is passed , and there will never be another Republican POTUS.

That means Obama and the Democrats want to create a one-party, second world country.

Funny, it was only a few years ago that Karl Rove was crowing about “the permanent Republican majority”. Anyone remember that?

Here’s my take: when political hacks start claiming permanent triumph, it’s just about time for the pendulum of public opinion to swing the other way.

I have to watch these things in order to stay relevant with my nieces and nephews, LOL. I thought most of the performances were rather interesting, even Bieber’s. I loved his pants, made his legs look like webbed toes. Seems like they would be great for swimming. I wonder if anyone has thought of that yet….

It makes me sad that zero of the artists cater at all to my age group (50+), although Taylor’s “pretending I’m 22” hit was compelling…gee, should I, maybe next time I’m in Vegas?? The interesting thing is that in my neck of the woods the radio stations play country, rap and oldies. I have yet to find a true pop music station or even an electric disco station (or whatever they’ve decided to call what is essentially disco music). And I proudly don’t have an ITunes account ;-).

Karl Rove just made a good comment. Holder said he recused himself from the AP mess. Did he recuse himself from the Fox news reporter action?
He is not my favorite person in the world, but sometimes he does make good points

  12. must read from Glen Greenwald about the obama war on journalism.

  13. great comment from that article:

obama defenders’ “latest mantra seems to be the rather desperate “Well this is not ideal but Obama is no Nixon….”
    Though I suppose it’s true.
Nixon never tried to trash the constitution and Bill of Rights. His response to Watergate, famously, was to cover it up.
Obama’s would have been to bug Woodward and Bernstein and commit Deep Throat to solitary confinement.”

I love Taylor Swift. Her relationship songs fit right in to my experience with romance and she and Adele whom I also love are the only two women singers who don’t prance around in lingerie or less and attempt to call their exhibitionism talent.

Music is supposed to be fun and enjoyable. It doesn’t have to be deeply political or sexualized. Artists don’t need to be disturbed drug addicts or political activists.
