The Tree Of Liberty

The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. – Thomas Jefferson

“Those who fail to learn the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them.” – George Santayana.

Notice a pattern here?

Our nation fought a bloody war with itself from 1861 to 1865. This was followed by three decades of peace. Then we fought a minor war with Spain and in the Philippines. Almost two decades later we fought a horrific “war to end all wars” in Europe. A couple decades later we fought an even bloodier one that included a war in the Pacific too. Twenty years later we were fighting in Vietnam. Another couple decades saw us fighting a war in the Middle East.

The lone exception to the pattern was the Korean Conflict.

One generation pays a high price to preserve freedom. Their children grow up enjoying the benefits but not understanding the cost their parents paid. Then they find out the hard way that freedom isn’t free.

Unfortunately the tree of liberty isn’t only refreshed with the blood of patriots and tyrants. Many innocents fertilize the soil too.

I want to thank foxyladi14 for the video that inspired this post.

  2. And at this critical time in the world we have an administration full of “the smartest people they’ve never met” with absolutely no sense of history beyond the bits they’ve picked up from SNL and hip, late night talk shows. History as comedy. WCPGW?

Oh this is “rich,” no pun intended. Look who’s up for Head of the Fed? He did such a bang up job with the economy working with the WH…the revolving door of elitism and incompetence.

Larry Summers has an edge in the race to head the Federal Reserve

The Face of the New Feminism ? Ladie, we’re f**ked !

I think twitchy has a whole bunch of “funny” responses to this too, I didn’t bother to check it out. I’m a fan of “edgey” humor (pre-Obama SNL, Stewart, Colbert), but is political humor getting meaner now?

this is from Ace of Spades.
the sad thing is that the American msm has still not learned

In the spring of 1969, U. S. Army Chief of Staff General William C. Westmoreland gave a presentation to the U.S. Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Virginia. He concluded with this story: I recently had the privilege of decorating a young Captain for valor in Vietnam. He was in command of a battery of 105 howitzers. They started taking mortar fire. He had a then-experimental countermortar radar that showed the mortar fire was coming from a nearby village. All of his instincts and training said to traverse his guns and silence the mortar, but he didn’t do that. Instead, he ordered his men to take cover and led a platoon to the village on foot. As they got there, they saw the villagers were gathered in the center of the village, so they silently moved forward behind the buildings. In the middle of that gathering there was a ten-foot diameter pit in the ground, and in the pit, three enemy soldiers holding guns on the villagers while the mortar crew fired at the American artillery position.

The Captain and two of his men went in low, screening themselves behind the villagers, lobbed grenades, and yelled. They and the villagers fell away from the pit. The grenades went off in the pit. They ran forward and cleaned up the situation, and that was that. No friendly casualties.

As I was pinning on his medal, I asked the Captain how he got so smart. He said, “Oh, you could always expect ’em to pull a stunt like that when there was an American TV crew in the province.”[Empasis mine]

Ladies and gentlemen, the Captain knows his war.

    — Col. Ben H. Swett, USAF (Ret.), Vietnam veteran, 1969-70

All the evidence of stupid people aside, I have unwavering faith in the American people. It’s in our blood, in our spirits. It’s even in the immigrants who come here. The flip side of growing up safe and not knowing the sacrifices made, is a sense of entitlement. It may be annoying as all hell, but entitlement creates expectations in people. Those anarchists in Seattle, the Occupiers, may be as confused as all heck, but they are 100% American. Can you imagine us all marching in lockstep, saluting some dictator? I can’t. We’re hardly willing to respect a traffic cop.

If Americans were authoritarians we never would have left the countries we defeated. I can’t think of another nation in history that defeated and then made friends out of former enemies the way we have.

Made me think. I’m here today because of the Irish Potato Famine and Mussolini. Great choice, my relatives fought for the US since WW1.

        • myiq2xu says:

America is one big adopted/blended family. Becoming American means letting go of your past and accepting a new one. My ancestors came here after the Civil War, but I consider myself kin to the men who stood at Concord and Lexington.

That video makes me want to cry. Think of all the suffering and lives lost – the sacrifice and courage. No wonder Reagan, Bush and Obama can get elected in this culture.

Anyone following the Hillary movie casting ?

Looks like it jumped from the tabloids to the WaPo 😀 My choice is Sarah Gilbert, “Becky” from the Roseanne series. She’s young enough, pretty enough and by gawd, smart enough. Love her droll humor too.

    • myiq2xu says:

      Amy Poehler has Hillary nailed.

John Travolta has Bill nailed too.

      • DeniseVB says:

Agree. But this movie’s going to be Hill’s “younger” years, with Scarlett Johansen and Reese Witherspoon (and some others I forget….) duking it out for the nod. I think Meryl Streep would be perfect for the SOS years. Coming out in 2016, how convenient 😀

        • myiq2xu says:

          Scarlett Jo? Seriously?

        • That’s what I said, Myiq. I was, like, um, she can’t even ACT intelligently, and since that’s the criteria… Of course she will probably get it. She hates Hillary. She’s a total whore to progressive dude nation. Sorry if that offends anyone, but it’s true.

Big Sis floats ideal of a border fee.
Since millions of Canadians come to the US to shop, this will hurt the economy to towns along the northern border.

do the backtrack bunch sit up at night thinking of ways to hurt this country?

  10. HELENK says:

when the politicans of a town have this kind of thinking, you can not expect much from the youth of the town. not much to look up to

    Are there judges like DWTS?

    Not since the 1970s..

I am watching the movie Uncommon Valor about a guy who organizes a rescue to war prisoners in Laos 10 years after the Viet Nam war.
our government does not want him to do it. This movie was made in 1983. He is threatened with the IRS and anti trust suits to break him to try and make him stop. Now this is just a movie but I guess the threat of the IRS has been around for a long time and most people really did not pay attention
