This just keeps gettin’ better and better:

State Department memo reveals possible cover-ups, halted investigations

CBS News has uncovered documents that show the State Department may have covered up allegations of illegal and inappropriate behavior within their ranks.

The Diplomatic Security Service, or the DSS, is the State Department’s security force, charged with protecting the secretary of state and U.S. ambassadors overseas and with investigating any cases of misconduct on the part of the 70,000 State Department employees worldwide.

CBS News’ John Miller reports that according to an internal State Department Inspector General’s memo, several recent investigations were influenced, manipulated, or simply called off. The memo obtained by CBS News cited eight specific examples. Among them: allegations that a State Department security official in Beirut “engaged in sexual assaults” on foreign nationals hired as embassy guards and the charge and that members of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s security detail “engaged prostitutes while on official trips in foreign countries” — a problem the report says was “endemic.”

The memo also reveals details about an “underground drug ring” was operating near the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad and supplied State Department security contractors with drugs.

In one specific and striking cover-up, State Department agents told the Inspector General they were told to stop investigating the case of a U.S. Ambassador who held a sensitive diplomatic post and was suspected of patronizing prostitutes in a public park.

The State Department Inspector General’s memo refers to the 2011 investigation into an ambassador who “routinely ditched … his protective security detai” and inspectors suspect this was in order to “solicit sexual favors from prostitutes.”

Sources told CBS News that after the allegations surfaced, the ambassador was called to Washington, D.C. to meet with Undersecretary of State for Management Patrick Kennedy, but was permitted to return to his post.

This story gives new meaning to “international relations”.

I’m sure Hillary will claim ignorance about any hookers. Which also explains why she is still married to Bill.

Which number scandal is this anyway? Five or six?

Hard to believe this is the first one involving sex.

  2. wow—-these scandals just keep getting better. Wonder why now?

At first I was very happy that this admin was finally getting its comeuppance but now I’m skeptical. The frequency with which the scandals are coming out make me think that its all manufactured—not the scandals themselves, but the reveal.

Greenwald’s explanation is that the dam has broken. Fear and the threat of consequences has kept the Obama “myth” going for years, the DOJ and IRS behavior has just brought in the sunlight.

      • yttik says:

I think the spying on reporters thing, combined with Holder’s attempt to have an off the record press meeting, has got the media all pissed off. None of these scandals surprise me at all, just the fact that they’re suddenly being investigated and reported on. That part is surprising.

    • lyn says:

Because Obama was safely re-elected, the scandals are hitting the fan; I will feel better when Obama’s media lapdogs become our watchdogs. Zobots also won’t turn on their dear Obama, because he already ate their brains.

No wonder they didn’t have the resources to deal with Benghazi.

  5. wmcb says:

It stinks to high heaven. Between that and Benghazi, Hillary is going to have a hard time running (and she is running, IMO.)

I’m still not sure how much actual control she had at State. Doesn’t matter. She’s proven that the country is expendable to prop up/protect the party for her. Oh, she may justify it to herself as greater good, buying time until she could try to fix things, or whatever. But she’s wrong. It’s okay to play those “appearances” games if it’s a policy or two, a bill you privately disagree with, whatever. But not when a man you KNOW is a snake is destroying your country. Not when an ambassador and staff are in a planned terrorist attack, and calling for help, and he lets them die to save his reelection chances.

You don’t fucking whitewash that. Ever. You see the Democratic party BURN before you do that, no matter how devoted to it you are. I will never forgive that. YMMV.

Seen on ace comment, no link, minor scandal

A senior Energy Department official has been caught trying to use his position within the agency to secure part-time work for his three children, a new DOE inspector general’s report reveals.

“Consistent with the allegations, our inspection revealed that a senior Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) official was actively involved in securing Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP) opportunities for his three college-age children during the summer of 2012,” the report, which was released Monday, notes.

The unnamed official maintains that he did no wrong and Energy Department officials told the IG nepotism is common within the agency.

But some officials say it’s “problematic.”

  9. I was thinking today – Back on May 31, 2008 (and for months before) did it ever occur to me that I was being photographed, listened to and placed into a nice little memory chip at the NSA (or Obama Campaign) to later be pulled out and labeled a “Political Dissenter”

But it’s nice to know our gov’t is finally good at SOMETHING!

  13. fif says:

What was the story when many members of Obama’s security detail were caught entertaining prostitutes? This is nothing new. Not that it’s acceptable, but politics and illicit sex? It’s a constant unfortunately.
