Union boss Karen Lewis blames ‘rich white people’ for Chicago school district woes

Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis is full of excuses for why the city’s schools are hemorrhaging money, failing to educate students, and laying off teachers by the hundreds.

During her tenure as union head, Lewis has blamed Chicago Public Schools’ problems on Mayor Rahm Emanuel, charter schools, standardized tests, bankers, venture capitalists, a lack of funding and “a culture of fear.”

During a recent speech to the City Club of Chicago, Lewis focused on her two most inflammatory excuses for CPS’ failures: “racism” and “rich white people.”

“When are we going to address the elephant in the room? When will there be an honest conversation about the poverty, racism and inequality that hinders the delivery of a quality education product in our school system?” Lewis asked the decidedly upscale audience.

“When will we address the fact that rich, white people, think they know what’s in the best interest of children of African Americans and Latinos—no matter what the parent’s income or education level,” she said, according to SubstanceNews.net.

The ever-classy Lewis then fanned the flames of racism by accusing “venture capitalists” of using “little black and brown children as stage props at one press conference while announcing they want to fire, layoff or lock up their parents at another press conference,” reports the Chicago Tribune.

Ms. Lewis is the head of the union that recently went on strike for higher wages even though Chicago teachers were already some of the highest-paid teachers in the country.

This is the same Chicago that has been controlled by the Democratic party since well before I was born. This is the same Chicago where Barack Obama practiced law and organized communities. This is the same Chicago that has one of the highest murder rates in the nation.

Get your kids up in the morning. Feed them breakfast. Dress them in clothing suitable for the serious nature of getting an education. When they come home, ask them what they did that day and help them prepare for going back the next day. When they get in trouble in school, make sure they get in trouble at home, too. You do that part, and their teachers, white, black, or purple will be able to do theirs. No textbooks, fancy computer programs, million dollar gymnasiums can make up for it if you don’t. Only the very best teachers can overcome you, and there are not enough of them around, no matter how much we pay them or how well we train them, to teach all of the kids whose parents don’t do their part.

On FB troday, somebody posted, “how many homeless people does it take to create one millionaire?” It really pissed me off. I am so sick of this crap! It’s a false narrative, there is no cause and effect, there’s no relationship between the two. People are not poor because rich people came along and stole all their money.

    • elliesmom says:

If we took all the money from all of the rich people and divided it equally among all of the poor people, the poor people would still be poor. And there would be no incentive for rich people to earn more money. So what little they got from the “redistribution of wealth” would dry up quickly.

Ms Lewis, what’s the point of having any black people in Chicago school union leadership if they are so helpless against, well, everything?

    • yttik says:

I got stuck between two vile progs yesterday. The entire conversation was Monsanto, hole in the ozone, greedy rich people, and how the GOP is responsible for making us all powerless against these evils. Our only hope, the D party that will rescue us all. That’s why it’s so important to remain powerless and obsessed with our victimization.

It’s an illness, I tell ya! Seriously, these people don’t want to solve problems, they psychologically need the problems to get worse, so they can validate their experience, their reality.

      • elliesmom says:

Helplessness can be learned. For some of us being helpless is devastating. For others, it feels like a cocoon. For some, it feels bad at first, but then it just becomes the way it is. As long as someone takes care of you, you’re OK. Until they stop, and you find out you have no coping skills. So you trade your autonomy for more “help”.

Well if Ozero has his way pretty soon there won’t be any rich people to blame. 🙄

President Barack Obama is about to launch a new high-profile “climate change” initiative, according to a personally-signed Sunday tweet from the White House’s Twitter account.

“We owe it to our kids to do something about climate change. Share this video and join me Tuesday … –bo,” the tweet reads.

The tweet included a link to a short video, in which Obama touts the impending initiative, but the president offered no details on the plan’s goals, costs or spending.

This question, via David Gregory, was an implied threat from the White House/DOJ. No question. Deeply offensive.

Good for Greenwald for putting Gregory in his place!

    *****
Chicago gets a lot of publicity about shootings but it’s murder rate doesn’t even make the top 10 list of US large cities for murder rate.

Interesting…… the Ecuadorian embassy is where Assange is holed up….I think in Britain. And Wikileaks is helping Snowden (one attorney flew with him to Moscow)……

So it makes sense. Ecuador. Fascinating.

…..well other than that bump in the road called Benghazi 😉 Also, I didn’t notice any “rising star” Dems give speeches, though Howard Dean was hinting about running, there was Pelosi who was booed over calling Snowden a criminal, Amanda Marcotte and Sandra Fluke had panels. Barney Franks gave a speech….. is this all they have? The Dems seem to be sliding faster than I thought.

I didn’t bother to listen to Karen Lewis on this video. I can hear her yelling “raaacist” every day on the news. But you know she will jump into bed with Rahmbo et al as soon as no one’s looking. and she’ll be back the next day saying we are all bigots and raacists and rich white people who are to blame. It happens here every day with this woman.
It is sickening to hear her.

As a rich white guy let me say what’s in the best interest of kids, period:
A Mom and a Dad who love them, discipline them, and teach them the Four Pillars of Personal Prosperity:
    1) Can-do attitude
    2) Diligence
    3) Continuous Learning
    4) Trustworthiness
