Woman accused of fatally shooting man at gas station: ‘I was just protecting myself’

The woman who police said fatally shot a man at a southeast Houston gas station Sunday says she never intended to hurt anyone.

The confrontation occurred Sunday evening at the Gulf station located on Cullen Boulevard near Yellowstone in southeast Houston.

Surveillance video shows a woman retrieving a rifle from the trunk of her car and pointing it toward the ground near a man armed with an umbrella and a pocket knife. Then it shows the man swinging at the woman as she steps back and fires the weapon.

58-year-old Louis Daniel was pronounced dead at the scene.

“I’m very hurt and I never meant for anything like this to go on,” said Shanequia McDonald. “I just went to the gas station to get gas. I didn’t go to hurt or harm anyone and I was just protecting myself.”

McDonald said Daniel was making sexual advances toward her and cursing her out.

But what happened after the shooting captured on video caused some witnesses to ask questions.

McDonald can be seen grabbing her cell phone and taking a picture of Daniel.

Activist Quanell X said McDonald was gathering evidence.

“She took out her phone to take a picture of the knife he had in his hand so no one would say he didn’t attempt to harm her, stab her, cut her and that she did not do this in self defense.”

He also claimed the reason she left the station before police could arrive was because she felt threatened by the other men who had been sitting with Daniel when the confrontation began.

Authorities have referred the case to a grand jury.

Okay, I may have been wrong about a couple minor details.

as a lawyer please correct me where I am wrong.
he was harassing her. she got the gun and pointed it at the ground. he came at her with a knife and she shot him.
so far I can understand her actions. I can even understand her taking a picture to protect herself.
what I do not understand is why did she leave the scene?

  4. Klown says:

Is it just me or was he wearing a hoodie?

    • Lulu says:

I don’t think it was a hoodie but some kind of jacket and hat. Wearing a jacket in Houston in July means he was crazy or drugged or something. No one wears a jacket there NOW outside. Even preachers are in shirtsleeves.

    • If her given name happens to be Georgia she in a heap a hurt.

Where was her rape whistle? Why didn’t she try puking or peeing herself first. Tsk tsk tsk.

  6. DandyTIger says:

She should have just peed herself, pooped herself, and thrown up.

  7. DandyTIger says:

This case, like the GZ case, looks like pretty straight forward self-defense case, not needing stand your ground at all.

    Also, she’s clearly a white-black hero want-a-be. /snark

  8. mcnorman says:

How could she know that this freak wouldn’t try to light her car with her in it? If she thought that this man was going to hurt her, she has the right to shoot. She could have just shot out his knee cap.

This is Texas. Gun racks are a dime a dozen. I do hope she has a permit to carry.

Granted, Houston is a large city with crime. The people who live out in the boonies, we shoot rattlers and other vermin.

    • er, that was a rifle, a longarm, not a pistol, or sidearm, which are the “concealable” weapons usually covered by CCW permits.

      • mcnorman says:

Yes, it is a rifle and you cannot conceal it in a handbag. lol

        Handy, though.

That aside, I do hope she has a CCW permit simply to quell any fear that she didn’t know what she was doing. snicker

    • Propertius says:

She could have just shot out his knee cap.

Sure, but she had no way of knowing what other weapons he had on his person. Kneecapping someone doesn’t prevent him from pulling out a pistol and shooting you. That’s why cops don’t “shoot to wound”.

      • mcnorman says:

I wouldn’t have taken him down at the knee (it was an option) simply because he had a sidekick with him. I do believe that she gave him sufficient warning to back off. When he struck her, that did it for me. Guess I wouldn’t ever be called to jury duty on a case like this.

      • underwhelmed says:

Stupid tv shootouts and gun use have a great deal to answer for. Bottom line? This woman defended herself. End of story. Good for her.

HW and Barbara lost a daughter to leukemia so I imagine it is quite personal.

My husband shaved his head when little somebody started losing her hair. She thanked him, but said he didn’t have much hair anyway and it sure would mean the world if mommy would shave her head then we could both be bald together.

I called my hair dresser and he came over with clippers to shave my head. At the last minute she told him to stop that I sure would look funny without hair and I’ve never had a “hat head”. So instead I went really, really short…….as in an inch or an inch and a half. At the time my hair was mid-way down my back. I didn’t need a hair cut for 6-8 months, LOL! My favorite part was running into my sister in the elevator at the children’s hospital a few days later when my daughter was inpatient again. My sister screamed like she was in a horror movie and cowered in the corner of the elevator screaming OMG what have you done, LOL!

      • helenk3 says:

the feelings of a sick child trump everything. I am sure knowing that you and your husband would be willing to join her in being bald had to mean a lot. you both are good caring parents. both of you look in the mirror and say ” Damn I am Good”

      • votermom says:

        Love the story.
Hope little somebody is super healthy now.

    Weiner blames Huma for sexting

“These things I did, as you have read in the papers, didn’t happen once. It was a terrible mistake that I unfortunately returned to during a rough time in our marriage. After a lot of reflection, some professional help, and a general reorientation of my life, Huma has given me a second chance. I will never stop being grateful for that.”

It was the rough time in their marriage. If only she’d been a better wife.

    • Remember that their marriage was, what, a year old, two max, when the scandal broke. You couldn’t have paid me to stay. I’d have taken that baby, my dignity, and GTFO.

    • trixta says:

The “rough time” Weiner is referring to is when he was caught sexting the first time.

The Department of Homeland Security says it is illegal to freely play music in The United States.
July 20, 2013 Posted by Michael Martin under Music Vs. Dept. Homeland Security

The Department of Homeland Security (An agency enacted through the Patriot Act) is now demanding through enforcement from The State Fire Marshalls that ALL LIVE MUSIC PLAYED IN THE UNITED STATES MUST HAVE A PERMIT FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY.

This is an outrage to freedom and the ideals of The American people and our quickly evaporating rights.

This is just the start to the reality of what The Department of Homeland Security is going to do to the American citizens. The DHS is actually saying it is illegal to play music or operate a business where music is played for any reason without paying The Department of Homeland Security, and giving them much personal and private information. If The DHS can regulate the performance of a song where do you think they will stop? The fact is they won’t!

    • Somebody says:

OK I just have to say in DHS’s defense perhaps they’ve heard about the garage band across the street from me. Truly their “performances” should be considered a crime.

I wonder if I can call big sis next Friday night when they start warming up? They added a bass player last week, unfortunately he only knows four or five notes and he plays them no matter what song or what key the song is in.

If I call big sis and DHS actually raids them I’ll be sure to film it and post it here!

I think the lady with the rifle handled herself with grace and dignity . I particularly admire the ease with which she handled her rifle. What kind of fuking idiot goes after someone with a loaded rifle in their hands? A soon to be dead one .
