BRUSH AND FLOSS

I lied, I didn’t try. I didn’t want to write about Miley or Syria. I’ve said everything I want to about both of them, at least for now. So what else is there?

Racism? Race baiting? Been there, done that.

Football hasn’t started. Baseball is over, at least for me.

I’m just not feeling it.

Sue me.

I am about 2/3 of the way through Under The Dome by Stephen King. I’m not sure what’s worse, the factual errors or the heavy political messaging. (The “Big Red One” was never stationed in Wurzburg. That was where 3rd Infantry (Marne) headquarters was located.)

  2. Haha! I know the feeling. Dog Days, baby. I’d come home after work and work up a righteous rant about how this black woman over at Jezebel is acting like Miley Cyrus wrote the song, choreographed the dance, personally hired the dancers so she could abuse then, AND made sure no black people won any awards, but you know, I’ve got a date with a cigar at Indy’s premier cocktail lounge later. πŸ˜‰

    • well I for one would very much look forward to your rant. That piece gave me a colossal headache, and I wouldn’t even know where to begin to respond to it. But I am certain you would do it justice and say everything I’m thinking and more and do it well.

    • elliesmom says:

My mom used to say there is something called “whine-overload”, not to be confused with “wine-overload”. Either one can make you not care anymore, but the latter is far more pleasant than the former. I’m on “whine-overload” with women like the poor dear at Jezebel.

      • votermom says:

When any of my kids start using a whiny tone of voice, I go thru this act where I can’t understand what they’re saying until they restate in a normal voice.
If only Jezebel’s mom had done that too. πŸ˜€

    • swanspirit says:

I read that piece of garbage , and there is nothing valid in it ..ABSOLUTELY NOTHING She wants white artists to stop “appropriating ” black culture and music ? I guess she better write Paul Simon and tell him to stop working with African artists , oh shit where do you go from there , really ? Just tell artists to stop influencing each other mmmkay???
And has this author ever seen a modern hip hop or rap video? She is worried about exploiting black women ??
And why is all the focus on Miley , when there was a fully dressed married male taking the “dominant” role in that performance ?
The music industry is one of the last bastions of pure unadulterated misogyny , but she wants to make that performance racist .What an idiot .

      • swanspirit says:

She is a complete idiot , I don’t care how many times she says “reductive”

      • Constance says:

“The music industry is one of the last bastions of pure unadulterated misogyny”

I agree and While I think less of Miley for conforming the truth is, if she didn’t conform to music industry narrow sexual standards for women she wouldn’t be working in the music industry. Look at how the pigs reacted a few years ago when Taylor Swift who doesn’t conform won an award. But the movie/TV industry is just as bad. All these girls like Lindsey Lohan, Brittany and her sister, Vanessa Hudgens and even Selena have great careers and interesting acting jobs until they come of age and then they are relegated to bikini wearer in some uninspired never ending old mans wet dream. But they can always hope for a role as a stripper/hooker in some self-righteous, overwrought show written, cast, costumed, filmed and edited by men for the entertainment of male audiences.

    • leslie says:

Thanks everyone. I thought I was completely alone in this. Miley Cyrus was one thing – THIS is entirely another. They had no more in common with one another than I have with professional football.

    • The Klown says:

Is it okay to complain about black people appropriating white sports?

They’ve stolen our culture! All we have left is hockey and NASCAR.

      /snark

      • swanspirit says:

Especially that part of football where they pat each other on the butt , that is so white , how dare they appropriate it !
        /double snark

        • Mt.Laurel says:

I think this would now be considered very un-pc, but the pat on the butt comment made me think of this (I am getting old). They stole a great deal from football (American version). /snarking snark

    • gxm17 says:

What About Our Daughters had a great rant on this. Basically, her take was you can’t steal from me something I don’t own and black women don’t own provocative dancing.

Besides, unless “Ninjacate” is biracial and has one Japanese parent, she’s done a little bit of appropriatin’ herself. Everyone appropriates, that’s how human cultures grow and evolve. In a world free from appropriation, only people with British ancestors can read or perform Shakespeare; only people with French ancestors can perform cabaret; only people with Scottish (or Irish) ancestors can drink whiskey; and only people with Italian ancestors can eat pizza. That’s just plain stupid and it seems to me that there is far too much stupid clamoring for attention these days. The Grievance Factory has become a cat chasing its own tail, and they have no idea how asinine they look.

      • gxm17 says:

Oh, and an Italian invented the piano, so Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder, and McCoy Tyner must stop playing piano immediately! Unless of course they have an Italian ancestor. It’s so effing ridiculous.

On the local CBS tv news this am they mentioned syrian american community in the nearby areas are protesting US involvement. They mostly seem to think the rebels are behind the nerve agent thing.
I’m surprised that CBS would mention it – Obama really has an uphill climb on this one.

    • leslie says:

Well, be happy you don’t live in Chicago. (for oh, so many reasons) Our local CBS news has dug up “a man, born in Chicago but raised in Damascus” who is hoping our “intervention” will alleviate the suffering of the people of Syria.
(My thought is we will kill hundreds – who will no longer suffer in Syria – but be deader than doornails.) And we will enter yet another war in order to alleviate the decrease of Obama’s “credibility”.

I thought Sarkosy was gone? And Obama is too skinny to be “hulking” but I’ll give you the idiot neanderthal.

Joe Legal: $25.00 per hour x 40 hours = $1000.00 per week, or $52,000.00 per year. Now take 30% away for state and federal tax; Joe Legal now has $31,231.00.

Jose Illegal: $15.00 per hour x 40 hours = $600.00 per week, or $31,200.0 0 per year. Jose Illegal pays no taxes. Jose Illegal now has $31,200.00.

Joe Legal pays medical and dental insurance with limited coverage for his family at $600.00 per month, or $7,200.00 per year. Joe Legal now has $24,031.00.

Jose Illegal has full medical and dental coverage through the state and Local clinics and emergency hospitals at a cost of $0.00 per year.
    Jose Illegal still has $31,200.00.

Joe Legal makes too much money and is not eligible for food stamps or welfare. Joe Legal pays $500.00 per month for food, or $6,000.00 per year. Joe Legal now has $18,031.00.

Jose Illegal has no documented income and is eligible for food stamps, WIC and welfare. Jose Illegal still has $31,200.00.

Joe Legal pays rent of $1,200.00 per month, or $14,400.00 per year. Joe Legal now has 9,631 .00.

Jose Illegal receives a $500.00 per month Federal Rent Subsidy. Jose Illegal pays out that $500.00 per month, or $6,000.00 per year.
Jose Illegal still has $ 31,200.00.

Joe Legal pays $200.00 per month, or $2,400.00 for car insurance. Some of that is uninsured motorist insurance. Joe Legal now has $7,231.00.

Jose Illegal says, “We don’t need no stinkin’ insurance!” and still has $31,200.00.

Joe Legal has to make his $7,231.00 stretch to pay utilities, gasoline, etc..

Jose Illegal has to make his $31,200.00 stretch to pay utilities, gasoline, and what he sends out of the country every month..

Joe Legal now works overtime on Saturdays or gets a part time job after work.

Jose Illegal has nights and weekends off to enjoy with his family.

Joe Legal’s and Jose Illegal’s children both attend the same elementary school. Joe Legal pays for his children’s lunches, while Jose Illegal’s children get a government sponsored lunch. Jose Illegal’s children have an after school ESL program. Joe Legal’s children go home.

Now, when they reach college age, Joe Legal’s kids may not get into a State School and may not qualify for scholarships, grants or other tuition help, even though Joe has been paying for State Schools through his taxes, while Jose Illegal’s kids “go to the head of the class” because they are a minority.

Joe Legal and Jose Illegal both enjoy the same police and fire services, but Joe paid for them and Jose did not pay.

As an employer and having in business for 36 years here is the scenario that I have seen:
Jose illegal comes to apply for a job. He has all the paperwork that I need (and I always do EVERYHING by the book and I am not allowed to check to see if his papers are real. I can only accept them as is)

Joe legal comes to apply for job and says he doesn’t have his SS# because his mom forgot to remind him to take it along. He calls her and yells at her for forgetting.

Jose illegal says he will work all hours and any days I can use him. He is willing to accept $14.00 an hour with no benefits.

Joe legal is insulted at $14.00 and says he needs at least $20 and hour and wants paid vacations. He can not work weekends and needs to be off by 3:00 so he can pick his girlfriend up from school.

Jose illegal shows up 5 minutes early every day, never misses a day of work and always stays an extra 10 after work to clean his tools.

Joe legal misses about a day a week, comes in late and leaves early 2 or 3 times a week. He never calls in sick when he misses a day. He just doesn’t show up.

+++( AS employer, I with hold all federal and state taxes, medicare tax and social security. AS employer I also contribute 7% out of my pocket toward their SS.)

Jose illegal works for me for 20 years. He has a good safety record. He saved his money driving old cars and not wasting money of fast food.
Joe legal works for me for a year at which time he gets a minor injury and files for Workman’s Comp and disability. He’s broke cause he drives a new car and just added a new sound system and buys expensive food for lunch.

Jose illegal retires and does not claim any of his social security cause his papers may not be completely legal. All his contributions plus my 7% contributions stays in the US Treasury.

Joe legal milks the system for all he can get until he can do this to another employer.

    ALERTS TO THREATS
    IN 2013 EUROPE

    From JOHN CLEESE

The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent events in Syria and have therefore raised their security level from “Miffed” to “Peeved.” Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to “Irritated” or even “A Bit Cross.” The English have not been “A Bit Cross” since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies nearly ran out. Terrorists have been re-categorized from “Tiresome” to “A Bloody Nuisance.” The last time the British issued a “Bloody Nuisance” warning level was in 1588, when threatened by the Spanish Armada.

The Scots have raised their threat level from “Pissed Off” to “Let’s get the Bastards.” They don’t have any other levels. This is the reason they have been used on the front line of the British army for the last 300 years.

The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from “Run” to “Hide.” The only two higher levels in France are “Collaborate” and “Surrender.” The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France ‘s white flag factory, effectively paralyzing the country’s military capability.

Italy has increased the alert level from “Shout Loudly and Excitedly” to “Elaborate Military Posturing.” Two more levels remain: “Ineffective Combat Operations” and “Change Sides.”

The Germans have increased their alert state from “Disdainful Arrogance” to “Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs.” They also have two higher levels: “Invade a Neighbour” and “Lose.”

Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual; the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels ..

The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to deploy. These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy.

Australia, meanwhile, has raised its security level from “No worries” to “She’ll be right, Mate.” Two more escalation levels remain: “Crikey! I think we’ll need to cancel the barbie this weekend!” and “The barbie is cancelled.” So far no situation has ever warranted use of the last final escalation level.

    Regards,
    John Cleese ,

A Facebook friend shared a post from one of her friends who is trying to get help for her preteen son who has been violent toward her and his sisters. There doesn’t seem to be any solution short of waiting until he hurts one of them badly enough to get arrested, and even then he might get sent back home. His doctor has placed him on medication, but after two years it still isn’t working. I can’t imagine the heartache and fear of living with a child you’re afraid of. There must be some way for her to get him out of her house where he can get treatment in a safe environment. If we can give people three Obamaphones, surely we can help people like her.

The next time he is violent , call the police and press charges if need be , don’t wait until someone gets hurt . The police will take him to the Emergency Dept for an evaluation for an Emergency Petition to have him admitted to a psyche unit for treatment , if you tell them he is under psychiatric care . Sometimes this is the only thing you can do.

      • leslie says:

Just got back and I agree with what swanspirit said. Even though it is so difficult to call the police when it’s your kid, it may be and sometimes IS the only way to get help for the kid. And don’t let the police tell her there is no adoliescent unit. If it’s not in the district, then it is in the county or the state. She might get him on the public aid rolls for kids if she is left without good healthcare for him. The mom can also talk with the school social worker for information. The social worker doesn’t want to get involved in family issues like this.

Update on my cat Buddha — as I told y’all a couple of weeks ago, her liver values on her annual blood test were high & vet wanted to do further testing as the could indicated tumor(s) in her liver. Well the ultra sound & biopsy are done & results are back — no tumors and no cancer — woo hoo! Results from the biopsy do show she has hepatitis though & vet also thinks she has an inflamed bowel (or something that means that– I can’t remember name he had for it). Anyway, she is starting a course of antibiotics & steroids today. The steroids will probably have to be taken long term, but hey, beats cancer! Thanks for all y’all’s support & well wishes with this.

    • DandyTIger says:

      Great to hear. Whew.

    • sleepyhead says:

Great news! Does she have triaditis? (That’s inflammatory bowel disease + cholangiohepatitis + pancreatitis.) This can be treated but lifelong medication will probably be needed. There is a type of steroid (budesonide) that acts mainly in the GI tract and therefore has fewer side effects – maybe your cat is a candidate for that. Also, if you haven’t already done so, see if the medications are available as flavored suspensions as those might be easier for you to give than the pills. Some of them are even compounded as transdermal gels that you can just rub on the inside of the ear, if she isn’t a fan of oral medication. And you might want to try a hypoallergenic diet (e.g. a novel protein like rabbit or duck, or hydrolyzed protein) – some cats with IBD respond really well to that.

      • angienc says:

thank you so much for your invaluable info sleepyhead (now and before). I will cut & paste your comments to bring up to vet (but my Buddha will not need ear meds — she is a super gentle cat that gives me no problems with oral meds so I’m not going to bother). I got her that prescription Hills cat food but have been considering making food for her. Do you think I should do that even though she’s eating the Hill’s with no problem?

        • sleepyhead says:

If she’s eating well and maintaining her weight w/o any GI distress, then the Hill’s diet is fine. But if you want to cook for her, you can do that too. Just make absolutely sure that you have a good recipe for a balanced diet. There is a veterinary nutritionist named Rebecca Remillard who has a website (the name of it escapes me but I can try to find it if you want) where you can get a precision-formulated diet for Buddha’s particular needs. I’m not sure what she charges but she is the gold standard for homemade diets. I often refer to “Home-Prepared Diets for Dogs and Cats” by Donald Strombeck (available on Amazon) for ideas on balancing diets.

Oh, and ask your vet about giving vitamin B12 injections at home. These cats are often B12 deficient due to malabsorption (your vet can send a blood test to the lab to check for this) and the injections make a huge difference for them. It is a tiny amount (0.25 cc) which you can give with an insulin syringe and it doesn’t sting. You give an injection once a week for 6-8 weeks, and then once a month. Very simple and very helpful.

        • sleepyhead says:

The injections are actually better for cats with IBD, as they can’t absorb vitamins as well through their GI tracts. Having said that, the oral vitamins can’t hurt and some people give both (Rx Vitamins makes a nice one too: Amino-B-Plex).

My Buddha is 9 lbs now, but she lost almost 5 lbs. in less than a year — it’s why I took her to the vet 2 months before she was due for her “annual” check up. My vet has prescribed the exact same stuff for Buddha as your cat took (5 mg of prednisolone 2x a day & .50 Amoxicillin daily) — he said she should be able to eventually get to where she only needs the prednisolone once every 2 days but that she will most likely have to always take it. Nonetheless, I’m going to ask about the budesonide sleepyhead suggested as well as the B-12. I don’t have a problem giving it to her with a syringe (I had a diabetic cat previously and, as I’ve said — she’s a super gentle cat — the vet did the ultra sound on her without sedation — although he did sedate her for the biopsy) but the liquid B-12 you linked above looks good too. Thanks for that suggestion.

I found the website for Rebecca Remillard — thanks again Sleepyhead. I switched her to Hills when her blood test results first came back a few weeks ago, before the ultra sound & biopsy were done (I had taken her 2 months early for her “annual” check up because she had been losing weight/not eating/throwing up) & she’s been doing fine on it so far and has even gained a little weight back (she had dropped from almost 14 lbs. October 2012 to 9 lbs. the end of July this year). I will definitely keep an eye out on how she’s doing/eating/weight & will switch if need be.
Thanks for the suggestion on the B-12 too — I’ll definitely bring it up with the vet tomorrow!

just about every news site I went to in the last hour is talking about how great backtrack’s spewing was. and how the poor man has had to face such racism since he was put in office. I wanted to throw up.
this man is about to take us to war, get people killed because of his stupid trying to be macho and we are supposed to feel sorry for HIM??? I do not think so

    Did I miss Oblather?

    • angienc says:

You missed nothing — talking to us peasants about going to war is passe.

Carter talked a lot about himself. Clinton kinda needled Obama over blaming gridlock…lol.

And Obama’s MLK speech was mostly the Peanuts teacher with a touch of preacher cadence. As if that was unexpected.
