angry mob fun run

Kevin Drum at Mother Jones:

When Will Fury Start to Grow Over Growing Fury?

The White House, says the LA Times for the third straight day, is facing “growing fury” over L’Affaire Bergdahl. How many times have I read a headline like this over the past few years. Dozens? Hundreds?

Hard to say. But it sure seems to be the defining quality of American politics these days. We just bounce from one outrage to the next, mostly ginned up by the right, but sometimes by the left too. It’s a wonder that America hasn’t dropped dead of a collective heart attack yet.

Has it always been this way? Maybe. It’s not as if we lacked for partisan outrages in the 50s and 60s. But I’d sure like to hear from folks who have a good memory for those years. Was the procession of outrages really as nonstop as it is today? Did we at least take a break between outrages back then? Or has nothing changed except our exposure to this stuff thanks to Twitter and 24-hour cable news?

In any case, I think this is the fundamental reason that I continue to sympathize so much with President Obama, regardless of whether he’s pursuing policies I happen to like. I exchanged some emails with a friend about Obama’s seemingly tone deaf handling of the Bergdahl case, and one of the things he said is this: “My read is he is getting bored and detached after being so boxed in and hammered. He sounds like he is starting to check out. I think the staff is getting demoralized and are just not caring too much since they know it’s going to get hit one way or the other.”

Obama has always had a certain amount of contempt for the modern media and its endless Politico-style pursuit of shiny objects designed to “win the morning.” Ditto for the parochial nature of congressional politics and the insane tea-party style of no-compromise governing adopted by the modern Republican Party. Because of that, he’s often a lousy politician. He’s not willing to pander to the requirements of fake, outrage-of-the-day PR, nor does he even really want to engage in the normal sort of horse-trading that’s always been a part of politics. Aside from pure personal preference, I suppose his excuse on the latter is that there’s no point: Republicans are no longer willing to horse-trade, so why bother playing the game?

Instead, he wants to take the long view and ignore all the childish nonsense. Logic tells me that’s probably dumb, but in my heart I find it almost impossible to blame him. I keep thinking that if someone acts like an adult—or at least a little more like an adult—maybe eventually the media and the public will get a little chagrined and start ignoring the shiny objects. I know it’s not going to happen, but I still can’t bring myself to rebuke Obama for holding out hope. I think that’s why I often cut him so much slack.

The first time I read that I wasn’t sure if Drum was spoofing, trolling or serious. Then I decided that it was unintentional satire.

This article would be a great example for a political science class because it encapsulates the process known as Delegitimisation:

Delegitimisation (also spelled delegitimation) is the sociopsychological process which undermines or marginalises an entity by presenting value judgments as facts which are construed to devalue legitimacy. It is a self-justifying mechanism, with the ultimate goal of justifying harm of an outgroup. The concept applies to a wide spectrum of social contexts ranging from disputes about political entities to chronic illnesses.

A major portion of the arguments coming from the Democrats and liberals/progressives is based on three unstated premises:

1. There is no genuine policy dispute between Obama and the Republicans.

2. All smart Republicans are evil.

3. All other Republicans are stupid.

Basically, it goes like this: Every intelligent person knows that Obama is right. His policies are the best thing for the country and the world. Anyone who disagrees with Obama is either evil, stupid, or both. If you are genuinely upset about what Obama has been doing to this country the past six years you are stupid. You are part of a mob that has been manipulated and deceived by evil Republicans who know that Obama is correct but are opposing him for their own nefarious reasons.

It is therefore ipso facto res ipsa self-evident that any and all opposition to Obama is NOT legitimate. There is no debate. The science is settled. Obama doesn’t negotiate with terrorists. He won. He’s 2legit2quit.

So STFU you racist hillbillies!

Don’t waste your breath and my time arguing. If you say you are outraged at “L’Affaire Bergdahl” you are either a lying hypocrite or a sincere idiot.

What’s that? What about a few years ago when the Democrats were pissed off about Bush?

Don’t be silly. It’s different when WE do it.

The real question is whether Kevin Drum is evil or stupid.

    • Constance says:

Well I hate to fall into the designation of “Prog brained” but ever since the Burgdahl episode broke I’ve been trying to figure out if Obama and whoever pulled the strings on the Bergdahl trade were stupid or evil or just anti American. I don’t think anyone could be that stupid so I think they accomplished some motive we just haven’t uncovered yet.

      • The Klown says:

True evil is rare. Nor can you say that the people involved were truly stupid.

Misguided, naive, arrogant, and foolish, yeah.

And very sore losers. They are still trying to spin and justify the splatter from the fan. When is the next pivot? How about a Rose Garden photo op with the illegal children coming over the border with scabies and communicable diseases. That is the next scandal brewing-plague sent out all over the country by orders of the WH and Dept of Homeland Security.

    • DeniseVB says:

That is some scary situation. Last time we drove across country, some of those states wouldn’t even let you bring fruit across their borders.

    • The Klown says:

What I find interesting is that the left is increasingly shifting away from “Obama is The One” to “Obama tried but failed.” There is nothing wrong with their ideology or policies, Obama just wasn’t good enough to defeat the evil forces of the Right.

Who will be their new messiah? Hillary? Elizabeth?

      • elliesmom says:

It’s already Elizabeth. Whether they’ll be able to do to Hillary what they did to her in 2008 remains to be seen. But there’s no doubt the Obots prefer Warren to Clinton. And like with Obama, the young folks hear what they want to hear. Young folks think she supports forgiving all student loans, but even she isn’t that stupid. Her actual proposal is to let students refinance their balances when interest rates go down and to extend the period of the loan. Nothing in her proposals would actually reduce the cost of going to college. But she is definitely the new messiah, at least in the under 30 group. Hillary has lost a lot of ground with the old white ladies. Neither woman excites the minority groups. If Warren hints at choosing a dashing young black man for VP, I think Hillary should practice rocking and singing lullabies.

        • DeniseVB says:

What they really need to fix are the Tuition’s Too Damn High at public colleges and universities.

I still don’t get the charm of Warren ? I’d be leading the charge for Cory Booker, who’s too moderate for the mouth foamers. So far, that’s the only Dem I could think of ? Sad, isn’t it ?

          • elliesmom says:

A lot of my FB friends are my former students. While I don’t put political stuff on my page, they do on theirs. The general theme is that their parents and their grandparents have left them a world where you need a college education to get just about any job, but there aren’t any to be had after you borrow too much money to get one, the earth is overpopulated because we didn’t stop having kids, because there are too many people we’re letting agribusiness poison our food, the earth is warming because we won’t move into the cities and reduce our carbon footprint, etc, etc, etc. And Elizabeth Warren is the only one who gets it. Of course, she has addressed none of these issues, but she’s a “true progressive” unlike Hillary who is a corporate shill and voted for the war in Iraq.

        • Constance says:

Forgiving student loans or having the government get involved in any way is not a winner for Democrats. It is a bonus payment to people who fancy themselves elite that the hard working union members and blue collar folks don’t get. The elitists need to get it through their heads that they aren’t doing anyone a favor by getting an Art History or Women’s Studies degree. If you want to borrow $100,000. to do that then it’s your own stupid problem and don’t dump it on me or the other taxpayers.

My kids have degrees in Business and Engineering and they have livable wage jobs. It is just stunning to me when I go to block parties and people ask what my kids are doing and then are awed that they all are independent and working. Their unemployed kids have the most stunning bunch of esoteric crap degrees and it seems to never have occurred to my neighbors that these degrees don’t lead to jobs. Then when they don’t get a job with their Art History degree they go back to school for another obscure degree. Not a problem if you are wealthy but a very stupid choice if you are borrowing money the whole time.

Sending threats is stupid. If you mean to hurt someone, why warn them? Surprise them.

If you don’t mean it, why say it?

Sending threats by email is like putting your name and address on a ransom note.

  13. leslie says:

Obama has always had a certain amount of contempt for the modern media . . .
And the contempt for the American people is what should have immediately followed.
I saw it in person; was only feet away from the first-term Senator as he was touring the villages, visiting the “folks”. It was clear at that moment, that if you had a question or a comment that didn’t fit his agenda, you were a persona non-grata. The same with the bloggers who weren’t wearing the proper names on their ID badges. The way he treated his staff at that time, was as if they were scum. Why they put up with it, I don’t know. Perhaps they knew they were going to win and wanted to attach themselves to a star.
I simply felt tainted and went home to shower immediately. There are some things you just “know”. One of them is when you are with someone who, after treating you like dirt, says, “I’ll never hurt you. Trust me.” Maybe you have to be past the age of reason. Isn’t that 7?

  14. 1539days says:

I’m so happy that the left is in the same despair many of us felt in 2011. In my case it was legitimate. Republicans made substantial gains in the House, the governor’s mansions and the state legislatures in 2010. Then the Congressional Republicans decided that they couldn’t force the Democrats to do much without holding up the budget and eventually had to give up. I suspect it was because their big donors threatened to leave if the wheels of government didn’t keep turning.

The progs are actually sad for a different reason. This president has been doing all the unilateral stuff he wanted with little resistance from the media or Congress. Now he doesn’t even understand what looks bad or that he is so scandal ridden that he looks bad by default.

Ultimately, the real reason this matters is money. Democratic Party interest groups like unions and ACORN need tax money to operate and they kick back some to the party. Conservatives have started to figure this out and know the key to taking the power out of Washington is to take the money from these groups.

Meanwhile sure looks like the Gitmo releasees are having a ball in Qatar. No re-entry problems there 😉

Juan Williams Blasts Bergdahl Critics ‘America Should Be Loving’ Him:

      • The Klown says:

The clear principle is we don’t leave soldiers behind. And at the moment, I think what’s necessary here, I’m reminded this sunday morning of the story of the prodigal son. You don’t make judgments as you have the opportunity to bring that child back. America should be loving this child at this moment. Obviously we don’t know why he left. We think he’s a troubled person. We think he may have lost a sense of America’s mission. All true. But the idea is we don’t leave people in the enemy’s hands. The enemy saw him as an American soldier. That young man suffered; he was caged, Chris. His parents suffered.

        • 1539days says:

From what I’ve seen, the reaction of non-military people to Bergdahl is that he should probably come back, whether he is guilty of anything or not. People who served are actually the ones who think Bergdahl should have been left in Afghanistan. Obama thought he was going to score points with the military. He actually pissed them off more than before, especially when the response became about bashing the rest of Bergdahl’s unit.

I heard something yesterday about the West Point address by Obama last week. Apparently, he expected applause when he promised they would be the first class not to be sent to Iraq or Afghanistan, as if they went to the military academy to not fight. The last time I heard of such a thing was when Markos Moulitsas talked about how awesome it was to be in the National Guard under Bush 1 because he got free education and training and didn’t have to defend the country.

        • DandyTIger says:

Lovely strawman he’s got there. Most people aren’t talking about leaving him. They’re talking about whether it was worth a trade, and that trade. There are lots of methods of extracting people. Also, given that we know he’s deserter, that has bearing.

    • leslie says:

You can be certain that more and more details will emerge when the WH has created them, Bergdahl has internalized them all and can repeat them verbatim without shifting his already poorly focusing eyes.

    • Constance says:

Some say he converted to Islam, maybe he just misses his multiple wives and kids. Maybe he had built a nice little life for himself and it was interrupted by the trade. Maybe he doesn’t even want to be back at all. After all he hasn’t called home so maybe he has a new sense of home.

        • 1539days says:

I don’t get that. The Triple Crown is not a triathlon. It is three separate races where winning all three has been labeled the Triple Crown. The horse that one may have been better rested, but it was still a horse race and there was still money at stake for the owners. They decided their horse had a better chance of winning if he only ran the last race.

The whole reason the Triple Crown is such a big deal is because it doesn’t happen much. If we start putting conditions on to make it easier to win all 3, it becomes meaningless.

  18. The Klown says:

Secretary of State John Kerry defended the release of five Taliban figures in exchange for U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl in his first public comments on the issue.

Kerry told CNN in an interview that aired Sunday, “I’m not telling you that they don’t have some ability at some point to go back and get involved (in fighting). But they also have an ability to get killed doing that.”

Bergdahl was released May 31 near the Afghanistan-Pakistan border in an exchange for five Taliban detainees held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

“I don’t think anybody should doubt the capacity of the United States of America to protect Americans,” Kerry said while in France to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the 1944 D-Day landings.

Kerry told CNN that the former detainees will be monitored closely, and by more people than officials in Qatar, where they were flown after being released. The United States is confidant the conditions of their release will be honored, he said. “And if they’re violated, then we have the ability to be able to do things,” he said, without elaborating.

Republican critics in Washington have complained that the exchange for Bergdahl gave up hardened terrorists capable of attacking U.S. troops and interests. In addition, legislators from both parties accuse the Obama administration of violating the National Defense Authorization Act by failing to provide 30 days’ advance notice to Congress of a transfer of Guantanamo detainees.
Administration officials have given several reasons for the lack of notification — a need to move quickly due to Bergdahl’s poor health and the overall threat to his safety, and the likelihood that even a small leak of the plan could have led to his death.

Doctors at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, where Bergdahl was taken after his handover, said Friday that he was in stable condition and continued to improve but wasn’t ready to travel to the United States.

“There is no predetermined timeline for Sgt. Bergdahl’s recovery process,” a hospital statement said. “The duration will continue to be based on the pace of his healing and reintegration process.”

The Times report added that Bergdahl has taken walks outside his hospital room while wearing his Army uniform, according to the American official. Bergdahl, who was promoted twice on schedule while in captivity, objects to being called sergeant, the Times reported.

Bergdahl was a private first class when he went missing on June 30, 2009, in Afghanistan’s Paktika province, where he was deployed with the 1st Battalion, 501st Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division.

When he is ready, Bergdahl will be flown to the San Antonio Military Medical Center in Texas, where he may be able to reunite with his parents. Bergdahl has yet to speak with them since his release.

He’s so FITH he can’t even talk to his parents on the phone???

Drum and all other Obots still don’t realize that Obama fooled them. For the first time in his life, Obama may realize that his presence alone couldn’t move and shake Washington. He needed to work hard, and his delusions of grandeur were useless. I’m happy that the Republicans have fought him as much as they have, because Obama is the worst president ever. Obama’s had an adoring press and he still is a failure.

Hillary could be an OK President but she will never appeal to the Obots and the young idiots who at this point are the Democrats biggest constituency . You have to wonder what Democrats would do with their excess energy if they didn’t spend it dealing with cognitive dissonance because they put up a candidate who was actually qualified and could actually run a business or government. I don’t think we will ever find out. The Dems seem to only care about ideological purity and put no importance on actual leadership skill.

Amanda Kijera was on a humanitarian trip to Haiti, when she was violently raped by a black man. The act was both coincidental and devastating, as Kijera was actually in Haiti to dispel the “myths” that violence against women on the island was overstated by women’s rights organizations.

The intention of Kijera’s trip was to push back on the portrayal of black men as “savages” in the media. Her hope was that she would eliminate misconceptions and push back against common views imposed by “the man.”

However, Kijera’s trip took a turn for the worse when one of the men she had worked to protect cornered her on the rooftop, and raped her numerous times.

“The experience was almost more than I could bear,” Kijera wrote about the incident, “I pleaded with him to honor my commitment to Haiti, to him as a brother in the mutual struggle for an end to our common oppression, but to no avail. He didn’t care.”

According to Kijera, she eventually stopped fighting him, claiming that there was nothing she could do to stop him from raping her repeatedly. After the tragic experience, she placed the blame on a very unexpected course.
“Women are not the source of their oppression; oppressive policies and the as-yet unaddressed white patriarchy which still dominates the global stage are,” she explained. She also went on to argue that it is up to the United Nations to support people who are forced to bear the brunt of black male aggression.
Kijera makes the outrageous claim that dependency on white people causes them to act out against them. She alludes that this was the reason for her attack.

While the circumstances Kijera were forced to endure were unacceptable, her commits make the unspoken conclusion that the incident would not have happened if it weren’t for white men.

Talk about an extreme inability to think beyond one’s cult induced ideas . Staggeringly mind boggling .

Those claims are highly dubious, say the people who have no personal connection to anyone in combat.

I hear the Elizabeth Warren love all the time. I simply say I get why you think she is the cat’s meow but come on she taught at Harvard. Nothing is more elitist. She is one of those McDonalds hating bigots. She is no Merkel or Hillary. How would she carry herself on the world stage. Korea Russia China Middle East. Yeah Putin is going to say you are so fuzzy wanting dishwashers to make 75 dollars an hour. Bless your poor bleeding liberal heart we see the light and now are going to nurse puppies from Antartica. Give me a break. She is no Palin they would chew her up.

The Obama / Warren model is truly frightening. They are ideologues, the example of the liberal who has never been mugged. They never had to face reality, so they can push through an agenda with no shame and no embarrassment. What’s worse is that there is just enough sympathy in the media and apathy in the public for no consequences to exist either.

Obama may not have adoration anymore, but he can find an emeritus position with a huge salary. He’ll never have to really work again, have captive audiences and just enough worshipers to satisfy his ego.

He gets to be Bill Ayers.

      • mothy67 says:

I wonder about that. I do not think the Bowe stench will wash off. It gets worse everyday. Ayers was never a household name. He was an obscure monster cherished by academia. The bigger they are the harder they fall. Many hitched their wagons to obama and paid a severe price. He was style over substance. There is nothing there.. I think Warren makes some sense but she should be a voice among many not sole authority on anything ever. Obama is all platitudes. I wonder if he might crack under this. Not sure what the APA is calling it this week but malignant narcissists / borderline personalities/ sociopaths cannot take challenges or being laughed at. He has been protected from reality and elevated to an artificial sense of self worth. None of us are all that. We are all vulnerable. Perhaps his grandmother compensated for his mother abandoning him. Who knows. My baby girl’s father is a twisted sick SOB. He can be charming. He uses this voice that makes my skin crawl. Fools many people but they get confident in playing people. He is dumb told the judge he only had one DUI. She said you know I have your record in front of me I only asked to see if you would lie. On cue he broke into crocodile tears. She was having none of it. Ordered him a psych eval. When I heard obamas speech in 2004 he rubbed me wrong. It was too pat I resent being manipulated and that is how he made me feel. Tried to read his book but I threw up in my mouth. I think he collapsed a long time ago but he was still having googly eyes with Whoopie and Barbara Wawa while getting a hand job from Fallon. The Bowe stuff cannot be ignored.

These stories about the “Iranian born” Valerie Jarrett imply that she is Iranian/Persian. She was born in Iran to elite African American parents when her father, a Pathologist , was teaching/working at an Iranian hospital. She and her family moved to the UK when she was five. At that time, Iran was the most westernized and pro-US country in the region. The fact that, among many things, she is a corrupt property developer and Chicago slum lord has nothing to do with being born in Shiraz.

Another thing about why progressives suck. I am gay and Catholic. I do not believe the earth was flooded or god made the world in six days but I do prize my morality. Do unto others honor thy father and mother. Stop that coveting stuff. Not a big fan of turning the other cheek. Ya hit me I am hitting back. Anyhow I get called a self hating faggot all the time. I get me abuse from other gay men than you heteros. When my mother is not calling me a son of a bitch she calls me modern art. Children should be like pictures seen and not heard. Shutting up was never in my cards. I am self hating gay guy but these people are sleeping with strangers high on meth and amyl nitrate. Sometimes gang bangs. Somehow I am bad guy. Excuse me for thinking AIDS is not a healthy life choice. All love obama. Quite creepy.

I would like to say thank you. I am an idiot who lacks the power to shut up. I gave up writing because I felt I was trash. I get posessed by stories I make up. Form of insanity I am sure. Henry Miller describes writing S being pregnant. You walk around with this lfe growing. Not how I feel. Stories do take on a life of their own but I always see it like I am a tour guidd. I just relay. I have a book called the Alarm Clock it is influenced by Kafka Flannery O’conner’s Good Country People Ayn Rand The Fountainhead Foe Esme with Love and Squaldr. Every title ftom Oneil. Georgy Girl Shiela Wood is Dead and Living in New York. Dostoyevsky. Led Zeppilin. The days after 9/11 I had to read those signs if you see something say something. It was harrowing. All over the subway. Why not give the gift of encouragement when you encounter decent people online or in life. Many of you inspire me. Tough cookies.

Left Behinf is playing on Netflix. Very corny. Lines like you are having lunch with the antichrist. Saidcwith a straight face. This version has Kirk Cameron . Nicholas Csge is starring in the reboot out in November. I hate Cameron because I wiish I had his hair. It is cheesy but the antichrist sounds a lot like obama. Media controlled by government unicorns and rainbows.

Questioned why he didn’t inform congress, Obama sez he “makes no apology”, that he had “unanimous approval” from “the principals in my government” to do the swap of 5 Taliban for one U.S. soldier.

BTW, Oklahoma is the only state in the union in which Obama did not win a single county in either the 2008 or 2012 elections.
Who’da thunk Okies were the smartest people in the U.S.?
