Fantasy Friday Open Thread

Is there any way that Obama could salvage some shreds of dignity and credibility in his final 29 months in office?

We can safely assume that he will not suddenly become more competent, nor will he change ideologically. He is who he is, and leopards don’t change their spots. He is unlikely to see any big legislative victories, even if the Democrats manage to hold on to the Senate somehow. He could always hope for a change in luck like a return to prosperity, but hope is not a strategy.

There are, however, a few things Obama could do on his own without creating a constitutional crisis.

First of all he could purge his administration of ever boot-licking sycophant, partisan hack and useless toady, starting with ValJar and Eric Holder. Fire their asses. There is a lot of deadwood and rot that needs to go, including the White House photographer and dog walkers. Tell Michelle she will have to survive without an entourage of servants.

Then he could nominate replacements that were chosen for their competence rather than personal loyalty or ideological purity. If the GOP retakes the Senate he’ll have to nominate people they will approve, which doesn’t have to be an insurmountable problem. Other presidents have managed to do it.

Secondly, he can actually start working hard. He could quit golfing and fundraising for his final two+ years, and let Michelle take vacations alone. No more White House parties filled with celebrities. State dinners and official functions only. Lots of people go for years without taking any time off. Besides, after this term is over he’ll be on a permanent vacation anyway.

With all this extra time on his hands he could start attending intelligence briefings and meeting with his cabinet to discuss policy and members of Congress to discuss legislation. All of that unfun stuff that other presidents have always done.

Last but not least, he could keep his promise about openness and transparency. No more stonewalling investigations. Hold regular press conferences.

This is, or course, just a fantasy.

After the drubbing Obama and the Democrats will probably take in November he will get up and make some insincere comments about learning his lesson and the value of bipartisanship, then he will go right back to doing the same old shit.

    random thought

since so many young people seem to drawn to the jihadist ideal do you think it is because they are looking for some discipline that is missing in today’s world? many have parents that have never said NO you can not do this or that , or have this and that. It is like the parents just do not give a damn about them. All kids need a line they know not to cross or they will be in trouble. Most of the time it shows them that their parents care about them.
If you can do anything you want , the good, the bad and the ugly without someone say Hey that is not acceptable and you could get hurt, how do you ever know someone gives a damn about you?

Yeah, a lot of experts say that the western recruits are looking for a way to bring meaning into their lives.

      • Lulu says:

It is also a opportunity that psychopaths find hard to pass up. “By now we’re starting to see an emerging taxonomy of the motivations of ISIS supporters. And as the types emerge, they reveal hints of ISIS’s vulnerability, and where its rapid expansion can be used against it. Patrick Skinner, a former CIA case officer now with The Soufan Group, estimates a total roster of 10,00 to 15,000 ISIS fighters, of whom hundreds may be foreigners, with the remainder from indigenous populations and ex-Baathists.”

        • lyn says:

My hubby said he read somewhere that ISIS is attracting people who want to kill other people. Psychopaths, indeed.

          • Underwhelmed says:

Well, you know, even psychopaths need a career path …

          • Lulu says:

And the Baathists, etc know it. They are their Waffen SS to scare the living shit out of anyone who may oppose them. Who else are you going to get to crucify children? They are also expendable and will be murdered when no longer needed or if they are uncontrollable. Think of how handy the western convert psychopath women were when someone was needed to run a whorehouse full of captured non-Muslim women.

    • 49erDweet says:

Yes, and may also be because they instinctively resent the disconnect in our culture which apparently “accepts” their parent’s assurances they are ‘peace loving’, when the kids fully understand the ramifications of their religion and don’t respect the need for that deception and consider us fools for swallowing that Tommy rot.

Well the union initiated civil service lunch rules says everybody gets 60 minutes and it doesn’t matter if there is a terrorist standing there when it is time to clock out for that baloney sandwich.

      • Somebody says:

Technically in civil service it’s 30 minutes for lunch and two 15 minute breaks, but I get your point. It seems TSA agents come in two varieties, overzealous or lazy. I’m sure out there amongst them are sincere, hard working people but those are the ones that go unnoticed because of the fuck ups.

My daughter flew home Wednesday morning after a week long visit. She texted me that she wasn’t required to take her shoes off or any of the normal stuff except walk through a metal detector. She said TSA didn’t check her liquids or her electronics. She was feeling pretty happy until I reminded her if she didn’t get screened then Achmed probably didn’t either and she replied “Thanks Debbie Downer”.

        • Ann says:

There is no reason her shoes should have come off. There was no reason for her liquids to get checked. None. It is called security theater for a reason.

    • DeniseVB says:

Don’t tell anybody (snort) but we’ve never been secure. You can cut someone’s throat with two credit cards. Don’t need no stinking boxcutters …….. to take out an flight attendant.

      • leslie says:

you forgot about paper cuts. I can’t go through a week without at lest one paper cut and they hurt like a son-of-a-gun.

Bom dia, everyone….Just back from 2 1/2 weeks in Portugal and northern Spain. What an eye opener! Definitely became a port wine fan and a Portuguese pastry fan!!! Mostly though, speaking of Fantasy Friday, was struck by three things: 1) how open the Portuguese were to discuss anything…especially politics and EU!!! No minced words there! And, 2) their incredible sense of the relationship of the past, present and future. They tend to know lots about their past history,,,,the good, the bad and the ugly, They tend to truly understand the screw ups of their current politicians and everyone has an opinion about a future “strategy”!!! And 3) how grateful they were to have jobs!!! My goodness. Years ago, while working as a city planner, I coined a phrase “cultural amnesia” to describe the lack of understanding that Americans have about our past, especially at that time for me as to how that related to Santa Fe NM where I was working. The Portuguese experience reminded me of how little anyone here ties these things together….even our president who says one thing today that is the exact opposite of something he said a year ago and no blinks an eye…especially the media. Ask anyone under 21 who was Gerald Ford’s vice president and they will look at you like…who’s Gerald Ford??? Read this James Kunstler article this morning on this subject…thought I’d share it.

Hope everyone is well! Have to say, also, that I really enjoyed being away from any kind of radio, TV, computer or iPhone! Although I truly did miss the crawdad hole!!!

Welcome home ! Thanks for sharing your adventures in such a beautiful part of the world. To tell you the truth the only reason I remember Ford’s VP Nelson Rockefeller is I read Ford’s wiki page the other day 🙂

      • lyn says:

On January 27, 1979, the family I stayed with in England told me that my brother had died. I looked at them in astonishment, and then Steve (the dad) said Nelson Rockefeller was dead. I thought it was interesting that foreigners viewed our politicians like that.

    • Somebody says:

Welcome home DrIguana. It sounds like an interesting trip, I do hope you all had a fabulous time……I’m still jealous! Just to clue you in since you were away, here in Florida it was hot, humid and rained a lot…..there all caught up!

      • driguana says:

Yes…and so it still is! At least in Portugal it was hot and dry! Nonetheless, we are most happy to be back home in South Florida…..where everything grows, all the time! I am hoping now to see if I can grow olives here but I believe they take a drier climate…sure did like Portuguese olives, too!!!

        • Somebody says:

Driguana I did forget one bit of Florida news, it seems that the fall lovebug season has arrived a little bit early at least it has here in N. Florida.
I’m sure you already know this but lovebugs are very acidic and will eat the paint off of your car. You MUST wash them off and not allow them to sit too long if you value your car’s paint. I’ve lived here my entire life and only a couple of years ago did I learn an easy way to remove lovebugs…….dryer sheets. I kid you not wet a dryer sheet and it will wipe the lovebugs off your car effortlessly, you can even save used dryer sheets they work just as well. You will then need to wash the area you used the dryer sheet on with some soap and water, but you won’t spend an hour scrubbing bugs or risk using abrasive cleaners that can dull your paint.

    • leslie says:

      Welcome home!!
and thanks to DVB for the answer to Ford’s VP. I was truly feeling like an idiot. 😦

Omg. You know how there are three sections, three tabs, to the comments at the NYT? One is general comments, one tab is Readers’ Picks, and the third is NYT Picks. The latter is chosen by the staff of the NYT for special notice. This comment was actually selected for a NYT Pick:

    seattle 4 hours ago
“Given our absentee/seditious House of Representatives, I think President Obama would be justified in declaring martial law.”

This was in the comments for the article by Bruce Ackerman called “Obama’s Betrayal of the Constitution.” and appeared online 9/11/14
Again, that comment was selected by the NYT to be in their NYT Picks tab.

The NYT isn’t biased or partisan. Nooo, not at all.

Obot friends on FB are all posting some article that Obama is being slowly lynched. You know, because people are daring to criticize him. Yep, they went with the “L” word. I was thinking people were starting to back off because he’s so clearly disengaged / retired and unquestionably incompetent. But nope, he’s still the wondrous messiah among some, and their cognitive dissonance is leading them to new lands. 2016 can’t come soon enough.

The first sentence is the best part of the story:

“Man dies after donating to sperm bank 4 times in 10 days

He came as he went. A marathon masturbator in China died after he donated his seed to a sperm bank four times in just 10 days. Zheng Gang was found…”

FOUR TIMES IN TEN DAYS???? No boy would make it to adulthood if 4 times in 10 days was fatal.

Ten times in four days would be a slow week.
