Hump Day Open Thread

When did this become a thing?

I don’t own a cell phone or smart phone or whatever they are calling them these days, but that’s because I have about as much need for one as Abigail Freemantle had for an electric broom.

I am not a technophobe. I used to own a cell phone. I could have one now if I wanted one I know what this technology is and what it does. I just don’t understand the need or desire to be wired into everything 24/7/365 no matter where you go or what you’re doing.

I LIKE being disconnected. If I go to the movies I want to tune out the world and enjoy the movie. If I am playing with my grandkids I give them my attention.

Things got so bad I instituted a rule in my car – If you are riding with me you have to turn off your phone and talk to ME.

Rant over.

In his press briefing right now he seems kind of hyper. Is that fear or is his ass on fire? He is still harping on controlling the epidemic in west Africa to control it here. While true to some extent it is starting to sound like refusing the travel ban is extortion. If it is not controlled it in Africa you die too is not a good message right before an election.

      • votermom says:

Btw my kids reaction to seeing him on tv: “Old!”

        • The Klown says:

You know your administration is in deep shit when you have to use bad news to cover up worse news.

        • 49erDweet says:

I didn’t look to see why, but it looks like the cable companies might begin sliding downhill pretty durn fast. So watch TV while you can.

          • Constance says:

As soon as there is a real chance to opt out of cable bundles many will because the people who run media have allowed all content producers to aim their product at men 15-55 or men who buy beauty/fashion ad space. That leaves a lot of un-served demos who will opt out of subsidizing men’s professional sports the second they get a chance. That should double the already high price of cable sports channels so more people will opt out. It can’t come soon enough for me.

          • 49erDweet says:

Google Television 2.0. It’s been kicked around a lot but when a new “Smart TV” comes along configured to also serve as an internet gateway and modem, including wireless, it will be a death blow to comcast, et al. 6 months?

The bible is probably written above his comprehension level but perhaps BO should have kept that DVD set he gave the British Prime Minister. It might have had a copy of The Ten Commandments as sort of dummies guide to plagues.

It truly seems as if they either were stupid enough to believe such things can be controlled (ad only the peons might be at risk) or no one on his staff or any of his appointments actually attended any public health classes. Heck, it seems they never even watched a TV medical show.

Smells like bullshit. A fake civil war to win back all the pissed off, disgruntled voters lost because of President Obola.
They’ll roll out Hillary now and she’ll call us all back to the fold, apologizing for the double-decker shit sandwich the country was forced to eat.
The Obamas will slink away with a nice pile of money and Valjar is most likely set up for life too.

I did the cell phone off in restaurants if I am paying. I had three people on on their phones not talking to me while I was picking up the tab. In the parking lot it got ugly.

    Ebola finger pointing starting.
“The health workers who treated Dallas’ first Ebola patient Thomas Eric Duncan should not have been allowed to move around, county health director Zachary Thompson said Wednesday.”
“Thompson said that decision isn’t up to him — the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are handling the monitoring of those workers. He said he hasn’t heard any discussion about quarantine. But if it was up to the county health department, the patients “wouldn’t have been able to move around,” Thompson said.”

  6. DeniseVB says:

I just heard a a quick blip from Obama’s “remarks”, did I really hear he’s reassuring us about responding to new outbreaks with a rapid response team, LIKE A SWAT team ? WTF? Is Todd Kincannon advising him now ? LOL.

In related news, my son is in Vail, CO now training with other fed agencies to keep downhill ski racers and the crowds safe at the Worlds… February. I asked him about Ebola concerns, and he laughed and laughed, gotta go Mom! That little crapweasel.

Someone said that’s the dumbass grandstanding TX judge. Same guy who went poking around Duncan’s apartment with no mask or suit.

  8. elliesmom says:

I have an emergency cellphone in the glove box of my car. I’ve used it twice in 5 years. My son asked me what I do if I’m in a store and I see something and want to ask Elliesdad what he thinks. I told him I do the same thing I did 20 years ago. If I want it, I buy it. If I think he should decide, I go home and tell him about it. If he wants it badly enough, he can go back to the store.

    • DeniseVB says:

I carry the same little $10 flip phone in my purse. Works great !

    • 1539days says:

I tried out a cheap smart phone (from Obamaphone/Tracfone) and it got flaky after a few months. It’s handy, but I’d rather just get a tablet and use it for phone calls. The last thing I need is a phone that locks up while I’m trying to call AAA.

      • mothy67 says:

How do I use a tablet as a phone?

        • 1539days says:

Well, I meant using a tablet plus keeping a cell phone for phone calls.

However, I asked about this. The tablet would need a microphone and a speaker and an app that make sit into a phone. I have Vonage and they have an app to make calls from the phone. You would also need cellular service (3G or 4G) and a data plan to make calls outside of a hotspot.

          • mothy67 says:

Thanks I have a cell and a tablet I was just curious.

          • 49erDweet says:

Have never seen a tablet without a mike or speaker. Mine has stereo speakers. Some have only one camera; mine has two.
Skype with my smartphone, tablet and PC. Ain’t no big deal. In fact. I’m thinking of rooting my tablet to massively increase it’s internal storage so it will download faster.

        • Mt.Laurel says:

I think Skype has an app for tablets with a front facing camera.*

*I don’t use Skype/take selfies but the younger volunteers with our rescue keep me up to date on such things. They find the fact that I keep my phone in my tote bag amusing.

        • 49erDweet says:

Besides Skype, which will do voice calls, as long as you have wi-fi or the internet download one of several “tablet as phone” apps from the Play Store, such as “Tablet Calling”. It took 4 minutes to load and make my first free long distance call. Easy-smeazy.

The CDC is a political joke. WHO has their act together, and is warning us:

  10. 1539days says:

It’s not very nice, but we’re lucky Duncan died. People who try to make the great escape have to face the fact that they won’t be saved just because they come to America. I think if the Republicans win the Senate, Mitch McConnell should go on TV and tell everyone Obama isn’t really in charge, he is, and all black people with Ebola will be killed on sight in the US.

  11. DeniseVB says:

Orioles out ? So it’s a SF-KC World Series ? Not sure how this is going to play East of the Mississippi. Zzzzzzz. Good luck to both teams !

  12. WMCB says:

Now an Amarillo, TX ER is on lockdown because of a patient with ebola-like symptoms. He had not traveled to an affected region, but evidently had close contact with someone who had.

  13. WMCB says:

Aaaaand it gets better. The nurse DID call the CDC, told them of her symptoms. They cleared her to fly. Idiots.

    • WMCB says:

Are any adults in charge at the CDC? I mean, are they more worried about stopping any “panic”, or about, you know, containing the damn disease? Because it seems to be the former.

I lived through this crap with AIDS – political appointees more worried about ruffled feathers and inconvenience and “scaring people” than about stopping the thing when they had a real SHOT at stopping it. It’s deja vu of the worst sort.

      • leslie says:

Do they think they’ll be called raaaacissssssst if they do what is really necessary? If the nurse who was allowed to travel was an AA, and the natives in West Africa are, well, African, then are they so controlled by fear of being labeled, then we have gone so far backwards it is tragic. And yes, how many died needlessly from AIDS because nobody talked about it?
I lost family members to AIDS. I don’t want any body I love to die from Ebola or Enterovirus D68. This has to stop.

        • WMCB says:

One of my gay peeps, North Dallas 20 on Twitter, RANTS about the AIDS mismanagement. They let millions of gay people fucking DIE, because they were too scared to offend a few gay political activists by shutting down the bathhouses until they they could get a handle on containment.

He gets PISSED when he talks about it. We had a shot, in the very first weeks, at drastically curtailing the spread. The Red Cross pulled the same shit with testing the blood supplies. POLITICS prevented doing what was sensible. And who suffered? Mostly the gay men that the fucking “activists” claimed to be so concerned about.

I’d rather be offended than dead.

          • The Klown says:

And all these years later it turns out that AIDS really is primarily a disease of gay men and intravenous drug users.

IOW – transmission IS linked to behavior.

Many of us are not gonna survive this, are we? Far worse than gross incompetence, it’s malicious stupidity.

      • Constance says:

I think it is seen by Progs as an opportunity to show faith in the dogma. Don’t worry about a thing, the government will save you! Hallelujah sister! Praise Obama!

    • Lulu says:

A physcian doesn’t run the CDC. Idiot children run the CDC from the White House.

      • leslie says:

Idiot children from the WH seem to be running everything. they think everything is a fucking video game that they can put down when they get tired or when they hit whatever magical number it takes to be master of the universe. 49er is right, many of us are not gonna survive this.
Now that our nurses are going on strike, the hospital is seemingly run by the same geniuses. they have deemed that we social worker (ffs !) are going to go into the hospital to manage the discharge of the patients – many of whom are A) too sick to be moved and B) have infectious diseases that – even if not Ebola – can kill. I should’ve retired last June.

  18. Lulu says:

I had a feeling the nurse’s union was blowing smoke to cover for the CDC and the WH. I think the nurses have reason to complain but they need to do it for nurses and not to CYA and shift blame from the WH and CDC. Dallas county pushed back yesterday and now the hospital is coming out with guns blazing. They claim they followed CDC protocols which were in place at the time. The problem was the protocols were garbage. One nurse trusts the hospital at least with her care and is in the same hospital and another one doesn’t and went to Emory. Of course the one in Emory went on a commercial flight with fever but the CDC told her that was ok according to protocol (her fever was below a limit) and they can control what she says now.

    • Lulu says:

Cascading failure. The gloves are off I noticed last night on a couple of news shows. There has been the cultural (remnants of Victorianism) in the limits on describing just what Ebola symptoms really are and what happens as the body progresses through the infection. It was a handy way to gloss over and contain panic by not making the horrors of the disease real and letting Bronco and the left’s fantasies about Africa and its innocence and goodness and keep the travel open without limits. That is over and the media, WH, and lefties in general are now faced with graphic descriptions of diarrhea, puke, blood out of unmentionable orifices, bio-hazard medical waste, horrific medical costs, crazy people, stupid people, politically correct zombies working for the CDC, and quarantined dogs but infected nurses being given permission to fly by her CDC tracker. Yes America, Bronco really is an idiot and this is when it is indisputable.

  20. Lulu says:

The state is going to declare a state of emergency in Dallas so they can quarantine health workers and anyone else exposed since the CDC can’t or won’t keep up with them. The CDC tracker responsible for the second nurse diagnosed with Ebola told her she could get on a plane to come back to Dallas with fever. The state, county and city health departments are gobsmacked so are going around the CDC idiots on the ground in Dallas.
“Zachary Thompson, the Dallas County health director, said those who treated Duncan and were potentially exposed shouldn’t “have been able to move around.”
” Thompson said his department wasn’t responsible for monitoring the movement of those who treated Duncan — that was the CDC’s job — but he said he favors tighter restrictions.”
“The county’s expected action Thursday will do just that. An emergency declaration, if approved by the governor, permits the county judge or mayor to control access to a disaster area and “control the movement of persons and the occupancy of premises in that area.”

  22. Lulu says:

Being weird and seeing patterns here, but the wild ride of “Dreams of My Father” Bronco starts with rejection and fantasy about a African father who left him, a lifetime of lefty climbing and power grabbing and rationalizing, to a west African father, allowed into country specifically because of Obama’s policies, who his family claims to have come to see his son who spreads Ebola and exposes Bronco’s idiocy and inadequacy. What a strange and awful circle.
