John Sexton:

Progressive Media Failed Again in the Brown Case

The left is very good at starting racial firestorms but, like irresponsible campers leaving behind an unquenched campfire, they are not so good at putting them out. What we saw in their handling of the Brown case is a rerun of the Martin case. The facts don’t seem to fit with the left’s views and even after substantial evidence comes to light showing what did happen, they refuse to believe it.

When St. Louis prosecutor Bob McCulloch devoted about 60 seconds of his 50 minute speech to the challenge posed to the investigation by the 24-hour news cycle and “non-stop rumors on social media” he was immediately castigated by a full complement of media progressives. Van Jones, Ezra Klein, Matt Yglesias, Ryan Grim, Chris Hayes and David Corn–they all rushed to the keyboard to bash McCulloch. In fact, there is every reason to think McCulloch was right. The media treatment was reminiscent of another case, one that similarly fell apart for the left’s purposes.

Comparisons to the Martin case began with the NAACP which made the connection almost immediately. That comparison was more apt than the spokesman knew and not in the way he probably intended. In case the details are no longer in the forefront of your mind, recall that major news outlets repeatedly bungled the evidence in the Martin story and always in a way that made Zimmerman out to be something worse that he was.

[…]

When the left’s racial narrative gradually falls apart, just as it did during the Martin case, they retreat to claims of an unfair process or they claim that someone is a liar based on their own faulty BS detector. The more obvious explanation is the one the left, with few exceptions, refuses to contemplate, i.e. this was never the test case they wanted it to be.

There are real world consequences to the behavior by the progressive media. Early, incomplete reporting leaves behind an understandable residue of anger. Irresponsible attacks on the process based on feelings, BS detectors and misreadings of evidence (or ignoring evidence altogether) further stoke that anger. The real fires we see burning in Ferguson aren’t that surprising given the story the progressive media has tried to tell about this case. Even after those fires go out the damage will remain.

Imagine dreaming/planning/training your entire life to become a bold knight errant who would sally forth to slay dragons and rescue fair maidens, only to find out there were no dragons left to slay nor any fair maidens in need of rescue. This is the plight of Social Justice Warriors.

SJW’s are Progressives and Socialists who see themselves as heroes fighting against injustice in all its forms. The problem for them is that the injustices they seek to fight are increasingly harder and harder to find.

There is a saying that when you are a hammer everything looks like a nail. Similarly, when you are a SJW everything looks like injustice. If you know the story of Don Quixote you know what I’m talking about. The modern term is “delusional.”

Of course the occasional real dragon does come along from time to time, but it is usually slain long before the SJW’s don their armor and mount their trusty steeds.

The worst thing about Progressives is that no matter how much damage they do they remain convinced they are helping.

    • Lulu says:

You are more idealistic than I am. All of the social justice “helpers” are at base scammers. The scam varies. It may be they just flat out don’t want to work and want a cause that allows them to sit on their ass and pontificate and show up to a rally, riot, or peace march occasionally. Or they can be in the big money crowd that uses social justice to overturn economic and social systems for their own enrichment. Think of anarchists punks to Al Sharpton to George Soros. At the very root of it all is money, how to get it, and do the least work possible doing so and with the level of activity equals level of scam sophistication. And they never, ever get anything done to solve anything because then the scam is over and so is the money/power. The same schtick is used for all scams.

    • Constance says:

Progressivisim is a religion. They need an evil nemesis and they aren’t content with an abstract Devil they have to assign the role to some random white guy who is doing his best in a awful situation. They feel the need to bring about total destruction of the evil of the hour. The parading through the streets is like the religious fanatic people who used to parade around whipping themselves. Every time the fable of Furguson comes on TV I turn the TV off.
It’s really cold outside, if these idiots want to lay down in the streets I say leave them there and let the ground suck all the warmth out of their bodies.

So you live in a town that has a large piece of undeveloped land that is zoned for business. The town collects property taxes on the land, but because it’s just land, the taxes aren’t very high. WalMart would like to build there, but they’re asking the town for a 30% tax break for five years. The amount of taxes WalMart would be paying will still exceed the taxes the current owner of the empty land is paying by quite a bit. The unemployment rate in the area is significant. WalMart will employ a lot of people. Many of them are currently unemployed. The wages the people will receive still leave them eligible for some of the government benefits they currently get. How are the people of the area being “robbed” by WalMart? And why do we let people who think WalMart is “robbing” the community teach economics? Kevin Wlliamson had a good column yesterday at the National Review. The subtitle was “Social-justice warriors who are too enlightened to let their poor neighbors pay lower prices.”

Who are the leaders of these Social Justice Warriors. Jezebel? Seriously, any clue?

    • DandyTIger says:

It’s mostly just a new name for activist progressives. They’re battling injustice where no one has battled injustice before. Mostly because it wasn’t there to begin with. Also they don’t actually solve injustices whether real or made up, then just make noise, disrupt, try to destroy people’s lives, and then try to get the government to pass new laws. All without breaking a nail.

        • threewickets says:

Anonymous is mostly left activism, but they’re also about the “free internet” and everything, so they get support from Silicion Valley libertarians like Peter Thiel, the Googles, Facebook, Amazon, eBay, etc. Whatever “free” means these days. Definition is always changing, but most importantly “free” to make hundreds of $billions from advertising and user data leveraged against free and/or pirated content running over flat priced ISPs. It’s a strong business model.

  15. The Klown says:

    Free Beacon:

Of course, this being the Internet Age, where Everything Is Terrible™, soon people were talking about the “black stormtrooper controversy.” And then, all of a sudden, there were a series of denunciations of all the “racist” Star Wars fans who freaked out because a black dude was wearing a Stormtrooper costume. This Mashable post is representative of the genre. But there’s something odd about this so-called controversy. All of the people writing about it just kind of take for granted that there’s some hardcore contingent of Star Wars fans who are writing that the series is ruined because a black dude is playing a stormtrooper. It’s just assumed that this is true.

But … is it? I mean, sure, I bet someone somewhere on the Internet is ranting about minorities taking the jobs of, um, Maori clones, because the Internet is a large and terrible place filled with any number of terrible (and probably large) people. That being said, if you search Twitter for “black stormtrooper,” you’ll find 1,291,074* tweets decrying the super duper racist people who are super duper butthurt about a black stormtrooper, and roughly zero** tweets from people are actually upset about the fact that a black dude was in a stormtrooper costume.*** Go back and read that Mashable post. You know what’s fascinating about it? There’re exactly zero pieces of evidence backing up the belief that there’s any “black stormtrooper criticism.”

What we have here is a prime example of a fascinating Internet phenomenon: the preemptive denunciation of a controversy that doesn’t exist. People live to be outraged, and they’re so excited for things to be outraged about that they’ll more or less invent an outrage to get their dander up. We can see another example of this phenomenon here, in which a blogger denounces a raft of columns questioning the character of a football player who walked off the field before the game was over before a single column of that variety had even been written. The preemptive denunciation is a form of moral posturing, an effort to show that you’re a serious person who believes all the right things, unlike other, bad people who believe all the wrong things.

It’s also dumb. Stop being dumb, Internet people. Just enjoy nice things when we’re given them and calm down. Yeesh.

My favorite is the Prog explanation of why Obama doesn’t/won’t/can’t show emotion because he would be denounced as an “angry black man”.

It’s time to get off the intertubes before I eat a whole chocolate bar.

    • WMCB says:

The whole Black Stormtrooper thing was literally invented out of thin air by progs. They are yelling about utterly imaginary racists that only exist in their own heads and maybe 3 comments on youtube.

That’s it. It’s completely ginned up. There is no group of people in the entire USA that have a “problem” with the black stormtrooper being black. Like, almost statistically zero individuals.

      • DeniseVB says:

Everything is racist in the eyes of the OFA social mediate/matters goofs trying to stay relevant.

~Sez the grandma who still has a cougar crush on Darth Maul 😉

    • DandyTIger says:

And the best part, for a few die-hard Star Wars fans, if they have any issue with this guy as a storm trooper is because the original storm troopers were all supposed to be clones of one guy. So it isn’t that he’s black, it’s that he’s not that one guy.

It was three blacks and a Hispanic. Two have been caught and they are 15 and 16 years old. Two haven’t been caught yet. How in heck do kids that age get so vicious by that age? What kind of environment have their guardians and community provided. Beating a living being, human or animal, with a hammer is extremely violent and psychopathic to me. The victim told them to knock off randomly hitting his car with hammers so they attacked him. This is more of the same. Do not tell a black youth to stop doing something stupid (get out of the middle of the street or stop looting) or they will claim they are being disrespected and react ultra-violently as their only alternative. This is madness and so is making excuses for it. Why are these boys raised this way and what is THEIR community going to do about it. Kids in MY community don’t kill people for speaking to them.

just curious, where are sharpton, jackson, backtrack, holder, and all the race baiters, in trying to fix the problems that cause this?

    • Lulu says:

Because they don’t care. They don’t give two hoots. Upward economic mobility is dead thanks to their policies. People in extreme poverty used to be able to climb out of severely disadvantaged lives with jobs. Skills were learned on the job. Hard work and labor was rewarded. Lower middle class jobs lead their children to middle middle class skilled jobs, etc. Now this same bunch is dumping illegal aliens on the entire country making it even harder for the very poor to get a toehold in upward mobility. It is madness and the most harmful policy I have ever even read about in public policy disasters. It is evil. It is cruel and soul crushing to the very people they think they can rile up with their class and race baiting. Notice that the little college protesters (in expensive trendy clothing) blocking highways are safe in their protected class system far away from dangerous and poor neighborhoods. Their targets to annoy and befuddle are their parents and have little to do with the poor which they have no clue about.

    • DandyTIger says:

I’m fine with people getting guns and open carry if legal, or conceal carry if not. More power to them. Of course if they go to war with the government with them (police, natl guard, etc.), then I hope they’re treated like any other domestic terrorist group. But more importantly, I hope they take responsibility and help their own communities. If they’re law abiding and the ones who aren’t all have guns, they may want to consider this.
