Media Matters Lies

Read the headline in that tweet. Now compare it to the one actually on the post:

Right-Wing Media React To Obama’s Modest Police Training Plan With Outrage, Deflection

Notice anything different?

But wait! There’s more!

Conservative media outlets attacked President Obama’s proposed plan for $263 million in funding for police training and body cameras following the police shooting of Michael Brown, accusing Obama of blaming police instead of focusing on issues affecting the black community. But research has shown that the use of body cameras has decreased civilian complaints and the use of force by police.

As I have stated repeatedly in the past, I support requiring all uniformed police officers to wear body cams while on duty. While some legal and practical details will have to be ironed out, the technology exists and is affordable. Body cams would not harm good cops, just the bad ones.

So who are these conservative right-wing media types who are outraged? Where is the evidence?

Conservative Media Criticize Obama For Focusing On Police Accountability

Mark Levin Blasts Obama For Focusing On “Racist Cops” Instead Of Black Unemployment Rates And “Black-On-Black Crime.” Radio host Mark Levin criticized Obama’s police training proposal on the December 1 edition of his show, accusing the president of focusing on “racist cops” instead of black-on-black crime and black unemployment in the inner city. Levin blamed Obama for creating “desperate” socio-economic conditions in black communities, claiming that the president “doesn’t want to fix” the situation and is instead focused on “lectur[ing] the nation on racist cops” and “white guilt.” [Premiere Radio Networks, The Mark Levin Show, 12/1/14]

Fox’s Carlson: Obama “Not Really Addressing The True Issue Here.” On the December 2 edition of The Real Story, host Gretchen Carlson responded to Obama’s plan by suggesting that instead of addressing police accountability, “shouldn’t we be having a bigger discussion about race relations in this country, potentially, or the high unemployment in the minority ranks across this country? Carlson later insisted that “the president, it seems, is not really addressing the true issue here. Maybe there are more steps to come, but this one may not be getting to the heart of the issue.” [Fox News, The Real Story, 12/2/14]

Fox & Friends: Instead Of Police, President Should Be Worried About Unemployment, Education In Black Community. On the December 2 edition of Fox News’ Fox & Friends, co-host Steve Doocy echoed a previous interview with a Milwaukee County sheriff, saying that “unemployment,” “education,” and a lack of “opportunity” were more pressing issues than police training. Co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck added “the trap of government handouts” to the list of issues the President should be worried about instead of guaranteeing police accountability. [Fox News, Fox & Friends, 12/2/14]

Weekly Standard’s Bill Kristol: Calls For Police Accountability Tantamount To “Beating Up On The Cops.” On the December 1 edition of CNN’s The Lead, The Weekly Standard’s Bill Kristol characterized calls for police body cameras as “beating up on the cops” and a “terrible idea,” suggesting that Obama wear a body camera “when he meets in private with civil rights leaders.” [CNN, The Lead with Jake Tapper, 12/1/14]

Fox’s MacCallum: Instead Of “Pointing The Finger Of Blame” At Police, Obama Should Have Brought People Together. On the December 2 edition of America’s Newsroom, co-host Martha MacCallum suggested Obama’s reaction to Ferguson has been “divisive” and claimed he was “pointing the finger of blame” at police with his proposal:

MACCALLUM: You see how divisive all of it has been and it looks like race relations have deteriorated in the wake of all of this. And I wonder what role President Obama and Eric Holder could have played, and how instrumental it might have been if President Obama had gone there and stood in front of some of those destroyed businesses and talked about bringing people together in this instead of pointing the finger of blame — you know, largely, he didn’t completely — towards the police. [Fox News, America’s Newsroom, 12/2/14]

So ONE conservative right-wing media member said body cams were a “terrible idea” and Media Matters considers that proof that “conservatives are outraged?”

Seems to me that Fox News isn’t the one with the honesty problem. I give the MMFA article three Grubers.

I an an absolute fan of Police wearing body cameras….

And…. I really like Kristol’s idea of Obama wearing a body can when he meets with Civil Rights leaders – in fact, why don’t all politicians that ARE ON OUR DIME (just like the Police I might add) wear body cameras at least during business hours…. We could learn a lot….!

I wonder which one of Obama’s donor crony pals will get the no bid contract on the 50,000 cameras, s/he’s going to make a boatload of money. I think instead of federal tax money be used, Sharpton and his gang of racebaitin’ Black Caucus should go into the communities and hold bake sales to raise the funds. They’re just all hat a no cattle.

I think elected officials should be required to wear body cams 7×24. With live-streaming to the Internet.

Love it ! Live cams in all the rooms of the WH, House and Senate. We can watch them like we watch the cute little Zoo Cams 😉 Cspan does try to cover everything, but I’d love to watch MO sneaking into the WH kitchen for a midnight snack.

From a comment at MOTUS and crunching the numbers……

Riddle me this: President Obama wants $263 million for 50,000 police body cameras. I can buy a Smith & Wesson law enforcement camera system, with SD card, for about $150. 50,000 of them would cost (assuming no volume discounts) about $7.5 million. So that’s about 3% of the $263 million. Leading me to assume that 97% of the money he’s asking for is NOT for the stated, very worthy purpose. OK, throw in some training dollars. But over $5000 per camera? (Oh, wait, it’s worse… this is a 50/50 match program. So they expect the cost to be over $10,000 per camera… insane). And even if you go for a high-end camera system… those are about $900. So that’s 7.5% of $526 million (including the state/local matching funds). Still leaves 92.5% for training / slush / ???

    • DandyTIger says:

Yep. And even if you add some padding for the government sales (because they really do have insane testing, documentation, packaging, etc. requirements), you’re still talking $300-$1500 per camera. The training required amounts to how to turn it on, how to turn it off, how to know it’s on or off, and how to take it off at the end of the day and hand it to someone.

    • DandyTIger says:

OK, one addition, they do want some sort of way to upload, store, and view/search the videos. So add a few million total for that system. Maybe we’re down to only 500M unaccounted for. Note, that’s a few million for all departments, not each. Still a drop in the bucket.

    • Mary says:

And just imagine the requirements local pd’s will have to meet to even qualify for that 50% payment. I think “Thanks but no thanks” is the right answer.

I’ve been reading that the Justice Dept already HAS enough money in their budget to do this now, without any further funds.

Maybe the “training” $$$ will go to many of Obama/Holder’s cronies.

    • 1539days says:

This whole thing is creepy. Body cameras weren’t even on the RADAR until a week or so ago when Michael Brown’s mother started saying she wanted cops to wear them. So is Obama using this as a slush fund that Republicans will vote for? Is this some kind of kickback to the Black community? Was the mother told to ask for this?

I think this is like the NSA. All body camera footage will be used to geo-locate every American within the vicinity of a cop. Also, it will be used to create YouTube video of any Republican / Obama critic who is detained by cops.

  8. Kathy says:

They will probably tie not agreeing to the program to a loss of federal funds –the old carrot and stick. I saw that Ann Coulter said the cameras would put the Rev. Al out of business and she might have a point.

    From a commenter on Reason:

You have to remember that these people, the ones who complain about jokes being “hate speech” or that “words hurt” is that they’re bullies. They’re bullies who rely on beating people over the head and neck for relatively innocent shit until those people are now afraid to possibly draw the ire of the bullies. And like all bullies, they are craven cowards who go after the softer targets. And even more cowardly, they couch their actions in the language of “tolerance” which is all just a semantic smokescreen to deflect people from realizing what they actually are.

They’re the wedgie-giving bully who figured out that if you tell people you are giving people wedgies because the target was “intolerant”, people don’t call you a bully. They call you “concerned”. It’s just a repulsive sleight of hand that’s become an entire tactic for a particular type of asshole.
