A Rotten Barrel Spoils The Apples

Congress is in session!

Congress is in session!

Ace of Spades HQ:

“CROmnibus” Almost Fails, But Then Retired-by-Primary-Loss Conservative Votes “Yes” To Pass It

The guy who switched his vote at the last minute was a conservative from Michigan who had been primaried out of his seat by an Establishment pick (losing by 30 points).

So actually this conservative guy had nothing to impel him to cooperate with the Establishment.

Yet he did.

How about a cushy job as a lobbyist after he leaves Congress?

See, it’s illegal for them to bribe a Congresscritter while they’re still in office. But after they retire (or get voted out) you can give them all the bribes you want. Here’s the kicker – you can’t promise to bribe them with a job later, but if all these ex-Congresscritters who cooperate while they’re in office get cushy jobs as lobbyists when they leave, even elected officials are smart enough to figure out the connection.

By the way: that’s the same reason why ex-Presidents travel the world getting paid $1 million a speech when they leave office.

Jay – Z, who I have yet to figure out who he is and how is got to get so much press other than he looks/acts/talks like a thugu, is most likely worried that if anyone digs into his past he will be up the river for good.

nothing like having those who aid our enemies sponsor a whitehouse summit

    Via Hot Air:

First, Congress has once again left a budget to be settled after an election in what has become a routine process. Americans have grown weary of the unnecessary brinksmanship that resulted from the collapse of normal-order budgeting, which gives due consideration of separate appropriations measures that fund specific agencies for the entire fiscal year.

Instead of rationally funding the federal government in a normal annual budget process, Congress and the White House have grown accustomed to using the continuing-resolution process that allows politicians to delay substantive action and create artificial crises. They then use those crises in order to pass massive omnibus spending bills on an emergency basis, a process that make transparency almost impossible. Also, thanks to the delayed resolution of what should be a normal budget process, omnibus bills usually contain a number of designated “emergency” funding measures, a designation that allows Congress to bypass spending caps, such as the Ryan-Murray cap that this so-called “CRomnibus” bill will likely violate.

The existence of a lame-duck legislative session not only makes this possible, but also downright encourages it. Budgets involve taking difficult votes and making compromises to get a reasonable consensus in both chambers on legislative priorities.

Voters have the right to be able to pass judgment on those decisions; after all, that’s the entire basis of representative government. Increasingly, though, Congress after Congress not only ends up postponing those votes until after an election, but also actively plans to do so thanks to the two months the current Congress gets to hold power after voters have elected others in their place. …

The 81-year experiment with lame duck Congresses has proven itself a failure, even more so than the previous four-month presidential lame duck periods that were shortened by six weeks in the 20th Amendment. It’s time to revert back to the original timing for Congressional sessions and make elected officials entirely accountable to voters.

sounds good to me. think the new people should take office 30 days after the election. that give the people on the way out less time to do damage

Not sure HA’s solution will have desired effect. Seems to me it eould worsen situation. I’d prefer law setting effective time limit on ALL actions of a lame duck session of both houses to no more than four weeks after beginning of next session.

My suggestion SHOULD result in zippo activity during LDS’s. That’s the desired result. It would also remove the “safe harbor” certain chicken-livered legislators from Ohio have manipulated to duck their jobs, no offense to Ohioans intended.

Meanwhile, a fourth Sabrina Rubin Erdely story is being questioned as to its accuracy.

The one everyone knows about is of course the UVA story, which is disintegrating by the day.

Before that, people had questioned her claims in a story about child abuse in a Catholic parish.

Mollie Hemingway found some details in another piece somewhat…Lifetime Movie of the Week-ish. And when I say “some details” I mean “almost all of it.”

Now @firstteamtommy points out what seem to be major errors in a piece about a raped Navy woman — Erdely posits things about military procedure in criminal (court martial) matters that @firstteamtommy says are strictly impossible.

It’s not looking all that great for Sabrina Rubin Erdely.
