When A Freak Show Becomes A Witch Hunt

I didn’t watch the interview because frankly I really don’t give a fuck. Daily Beast:

The Duggars’ Fox News Interview Was an Unholy Disaster

Whether or not Michelle and Jim-Bob Duggar are hypocrites, I suppose, is still a matter of debate. Whether they are despicable asshats, however, most certainly is not.

Appearing on Fox News to answer Megyn Kelly’s questions about the scandal they’ve found their sprawling brood of holier-than-thou religious conservatives embroiled in, the matriarch and patriarch of the family featured in the TLC series 19 Kids and Counting dug themselves into a PR hole no amount of high-minded righteousness can get them out of.

Michelle and Jim-Bob were interviewed for two ostensible purposes. One was to explain themselves in the wake of the revelation that their eldest son, Josh, molested 5 girls, including siblings, 12 years ago, after which they took strides to cover it up and skirt the law as they eventually rose to fame on a reality TV show.

The other was to defend themselves against accusations that they are religious hypocrites.

They have used their fame to preach principles that, to many, could be construed as hateful, but they’ve defended as pure and moral. Women who have abortions are complicit in a “baby Holocaust,” they’ve said. They’ve damned the gay community. Michelle has recorded robocalls implying that transgender women are pedophilic child molesters.

They’ve campaigned against proposed ordinances that would have protected gay parents from lawful discrimination when it came to raising their children. And they’ve taught their daughters that women should submit to men.

All while their son molested children, and they helped to bury it.

This is what is called “objective reporting”. Lena Dunham talks about molesting her younger sister and this is dismissed as normal sexual behavior. Bruce Jenner is praised for announcing he is transgendered. His daughters post a video of one sister sticking her hand way down the front of the other’s pants and nobody cares. Woody Allen is lauded as an artist despite allegations of child molestation. Roman Polanski drugs, rapes and sodomizes a 13 year old girl and the Hollywood elite defend him.

But Josh Duggar gets figuratively burned at the stake along with his entire family.

The thing I want to know is how many parents would turn in their own kid? What were they supposed to do?

First of all it is unlikely he would have gone to jail. In at least some of the incidents the girls were asleep and unaware of what he had done. The only evidence was Josh’s confession. A conviction based on a confession without corroboration violates the corpus delicti rule. Considering his age he would not have been required to register as a sex offender and his record would have been sealed when he reached adulthood. He could probably even get a job as a teacher.

If they had turned him into the police the most likely outcome would have been to send him home with probation and counseling. That’s pretty much what they did informally. He would still be their son. Were they supposed to disown him and send him to permanent foster care?

They didn’t “cover up” what he did, they just didn’t report it to the police. There is no evidence that he has done anything like that since then.

But wait! There’s more!

Is it possible to pick just one jaw-dropping, blood-boiling, unfathomable quote from this interview? Oh, there are dozens of them (and counting).

Certainly a frontrunner for the top prize would be when Michelle maintained that her daughters are being more abused by the press in the wake of the uncovering of Josh’s scandal than they were by Josh as children. “They’ve been victimized more by what happened in these last couple weeks than they were 12 years ago,” she said.

What a disgraceful thing to say. If we’re throwing stones from glass houses and talking about “protecting” victims, how about we, as members of the press, talk about how we’re protecting the world from being influenced by bile like this by vilifying Michelle and Jim-Bob Duggar after this interview.

What is more traumatic, being inappropriately touched by your older brother in your sleep, or having the whole world hear about it and having your family vilified?

If Josh Duggar was a Democrat this would be nothing more than a local crime story, if that. Seriously, isn’t there more important shit to talk about?

These people have a very bad illness and are using Christian fundamentalism to defend their actions. No matter what crime pedophile Josh Duggar committed, they would find a way to justify his actions and non-punishment through religion taken waaaaay out of context. Jim Bob Duggar is a female abuser and its no surprise he left his daughters to be molested by Josh, and instead of turning him into the authorities within the statute of limitations, sent him to a “Good Christian man” who had him do construction work to alleviate his pedophile feelings. Of course, why would you need a qualified mental health professional when religion can cure everything. Except for those evil gays and transgenders right! God forbid they use a restroom where they identify, instead, lets let Josh Dugger around our young children!

If that sounds crazy to you, IT IS. The Republicans don’t have a “Josh Duggar problem”, the entire normalized world has a “Duggar family and crazy Huckabee/Santorum/ReligiousNut problem”!!

    -Concerned for Duggar pedophilia victims

    • Lulu says:

Did the “victims” choose to release this information? Do they have any rights of privacy? Yes? No? Do the outrage patrol have all the rights now? I’d like to know so I can dig through Concerned for Duggar pedophilia victims tax records, medical records, juvie or school records. Pompous moral preening is easier than thinking.

The past few years I have come to understand the psychology of mob violence, mass hysteria, cults of personality and witch hunts a lot better. I think they are all connected.

    • 49erDweet says:

You bring up a good point. If only the pilgrims had been Democrats the kettle-full-of-witches thing would have been a ‘yawner’.

    • Lulu says:

Since they were minor children the law, including privacy and confidentiality laws, are supposed to protect them too. This is just another outrage circus to the mob. No one is safe.

  4. Myiq2xu says:

I wish I had never heard of the Duggars.

    • elliesmom says:

Until RD started writing about them I never had. I had to google Honey-Boo-Boo, too. I did know who the Ducks were, though, and I see the left’s battle to keep them off the air didn’t work.

      • leslie says:

Same here, except I didn’t know who the Ducks were either.

      • Mt.Laurel says:

I tend to watch TCM and DVDs so I am out of step with most cable and networks programs . If it were not for my mother, I would not bother with cable. At 92 Mom keeps mostly to Hallmark/Hallmark Movie and MeTV these days. She stopped watching the weather channel, one of her former favorites, after NBC bought it out because they rarely talk about weather and when they do it is all doom and gloom and climate change.

I thought Honey Boo Boo was a cartoon show for the longest time from the blurbs I would come across online. But then back in the day, when I still watched a couple of programs and news, from the promos, I thought the Bachelor (? I think that is right) was being produced as a satire on reality shows. Wrong.

RD’s rants as shared here are how I found out about the Duggars.

        • Myiq2xu says:

          I’be been binge-watching Friends reruns. We’re talking 3-4 hours a day.

          • mothy67 says:

I had only seen one or two episodes. Lived in New York when it was on the air and thought I was above it. God I was a pretentious ass. I am on season 9. So funny. I don’t want it to end. Courtney Cox was so beautiful and funny. Pity Frankie & Grace(same creators) is just not funny.Cox was supposed to play Rachel but she wanted to be Monica. Show may not have worked.

  5. angienc says:

What is offensive is how people are saying the Duggars are hypocrites for condemning gays because they “covered up” Josh’s actions. Do these morons realize that they are equating being gay to *molestation*?!? No of course they aren’t — because they are stupid.
Gay people should be outraged at the comparison.
Grant it — I’ve never watched this show & I’m sure the Duggars are idiots too but why the fuck is a juvenile record being splashed all over the media — not trying to defend Josh’s actions when he was 14, but there is a reason juvenile records are sealed & the courts usually don’t let them at a trial of the person as an adult.

    • piper says:

The Truth why this story is being exposed now.

    • piper says:

The media has always slanted the news for the circus hordes to feast upon instead of their shallow miserable lives.. As this administration winds down we’ll see more and more squirrels magically appear to keep the focus off the destruction and misery inflicted by the erudite ratty elites. IMO, The blame should be placed on both sides of the aisle 😱

      • Lulu says:

But their ratings are falling, the ad bucks are drying up, and they have to chase to the bottom to try and keep up which drive rating further down and the cycle continues. To expose girls and young women to scrutiny they didn’t ask for and are supposed to be protected by law from undergoing is now entertainment for ad dollars. What is next? How much lower can they go?

        • leslie says:

It does seem as if they’ve reached into the bottom of the pit, doesn’t it? MSM continues to revel in the slime and dirt that is completely irrelevant. I guess that beats reporting on the actual, important news – but it might somehow implicate bronco or others, who remain protected, in the state of our world.

          • Myiq2xu says:

Look how many of these shows end up blowing up in the end. Jon and Kate, Teen Moms, Duck Dynasty, Honey Boo Boo – they get weirder and weirder until they cross a line and then suddenly they are dropped like hot potatoes.

          • Lulu says:

They are freak shows. Just like in an old timey carnival. The piss ant networks script the shows and they get weirder and weirder until they are TOO disgusting. They wander off into social justice schtick that the little network executives and producers are talking about at cocktail parties or a gala and think the great unwashed viewers should be educated by their betters (the piss ants). Then they loose their viewership and they have to start over with a new show. Even National Geographic joined the cheap ass programing club of weird “concerned” programing to highlight what the piss ants think is national problems. No I don’t want to see junkies on a boat. I want tigers! Or elephants. Or bears. Grrrrh!

          • leslie says:

            Oh my…

Yep. He wanted his own show.

        • mcnorman says:

Just heard that MAC cosmetics gave him a very lucrative deal after that spread.

          • Mt.Laurel says:

MAC’s promotional arm is very good at getting people to believe that purchasing their products makes a provocative and edgy statement when in fact they are just being sold overpriced makeup.

I would not be surprised to find they planted a rumor (with Jenner’s cooperation) so both just get some more free press.

  7. Lulu says:

Juvenile records are now open season. Major laws were violated releasing this stuff. Juvy records are a no-no. So I hope all of the people dancing with joy understand that someone they know, love, celebrate may be next. A major tenet of our jurisprudence has been violated and the assholes are dancing with joy. I also don’t give two shits about these people but to violate confidentiality this way is not just wrong but a major violation of rights under the LAW.

    • Lulu says:

Remember Obama got the SEALED divorce records of his opponent in a race leaked to the shit media in Chicago.

    • piper says:

From what I understand, the police chief released Josh’s records. Does the man harbor a grudge against the Duggars? Personally I don’t care about them, or Kate, or Honey BooBoo or the any of the housewives.

      • Lulu says:

I heard someone say that a “lawyer” told the local yokels they could release it. That is bullshit. A court can order it if some compelling reason exists to by-pass the law but a sheriff, clerk, or “lawyer” can’t. They don’t have the authority and I hope the stupid Duggars sue the shit out of them. No one would release Trayvon or Brown’s juvvie records and they were dead. They released a living person’s and his VICTIMS! Sue. Get them kicked out of office and/or disbarred. The media usually won’t print juvvie stuff but now that is over too if you are in a despised sub-group.

        • leslie says:

          ^Everything everyone said^.

        • 49erDweet says:

That’s interesting. So whatever “a lawyer” sez governs now? What if one sez I can kill my brother, too, as long as I’m prepared to pay the penalties? Does that get me off the hook? SMH. Lawyers are paid for advice. Statistically, about half the time they’re wrong.

    • Lulu says:

Technically, DNA speaking, we are already hybrids. He is talking about implants in the brain or something. Hybrid means “In biology a hybrid is mix of two animals or plants of different breeds, varieties, species or genera” and since we are animals biology applies. He is using the wrong term. Enhanced may be a better descriptor. Of course he is an Ivy so he doesn’t quite get the difference.

  8. piper says:

“When I talked about the Josh Duggar scandal the other night, I said it was pretty disgusting that some liberal commentators are using what is obviously a family tragedy for political point-scoring.

I also told Megyn Kelly there were important questions to be raised about the conservative family that starred in the now-sidelined TLC show: Why did local officials allow Duggar’s juvenile police record, something that is usually sealed and sacrosanct, to be given to two media outlets? Why didn’t Duggar’s parents go to their authorities when they learned that their son was engaged in sexual abuse in 2002? And why would they sign up for the scrutiny that comes with a reality show, knowing they were hiding this dark secret?”

    • Lulu says:

The Duggar’s are dumb. Dumb as stumps.

      • Myiq2xu says:

If you watch weird people on television don’t be shocked to find out they’re weirdos.

        • Lulu says:

And most of them get delusions of grandeur because they are TV stars! Give a freak attention and they get freakier. I live near a Top Shot winner and know a bunch of his family. He decided to go “underground” to avoid the hoopla which he didn’t want. The network got mad at him but they had already paid him so there was nothing they could do. He won’t do promos or anything. He just went back to his life.

  9. piper says:

    Homeland Security???????
“With ISIS distributing its propaganda and recruiting messages to as many as 200,000 people on social media worldwide, U.S. officials warned Wednesday there is no way to monitor their online encrypted communications.

The officials, appearing before the House Homeland Security Committee, said while there are only several thousand hardcore ISIS propagandists, technology was complicating efforts to monitor them.

“There are 200-plus social media companies. Some of these companies build their business model around end-to-end encryption,” said Michael Steinbach, head of the FBI’s counterterrorism division. “There is no ability currently for us to see that” communication, he said.

  11. HELENK3 says:

I do not watch the so-called “reality shows. What I have read about them seems to be they are holding people up to ridicule . The Duggers how many people have 19 kids? Honey bobo how many kids are really like that. The Housewives not too many like that around. these shows are cheap to produce and do not require talent or scripts

    • Myiq2xu says:

I think most people watch reality television shows so they can gawp at the freak show. they aren’t inspirational and uplifting, they are vulgar.

      • Somebody says:

I disagree the idiot that birthed my grandchildren watched reality TV and ate it up with a spoon. She truly wanted to be just like a lot of those people. She even had a blog at one point, all about how her life should be a reality show. I guess she was hoping someone would read it and make her a star….SMH.

She’s a narcissist, along with a host of other issues…..hence why she abandoned 3 small children, two under the age of two. She fantasizes about being a reality show star. So I’d say she somehow finds the shows inspirational or something……loser bitch!

        • mcnorman says:

A star, huh? I think she lost out on that one with the girls who were preggers and unmarried but still in search of “true” love.. Too bad they labeled the one on plastic surgery Botched. She would have fit into the botched life category.

    • abc says:

Also most reality shows are fake. Prime examples are the Alaska frontier reality shows where the locals throw a wet blanket on it all by informing us that the rugged and remote wilderness where someone might be living is 3 blocks from a Safeway. Even the buy this house shows are fake. The problem with the shows about “families” is there’s no one around to reveal the truth. Everyone in the know has signed a non-disclosure agreement.

      • DeniseVB says:

I was crushed to learn House Hunters was fake. To be on the show, you had to already have bought the house, then they take you to see 2 others so it felt like we were in on the decision. Average show takes 3-6 weeks to film and edit.

        • Myiq2xu says:

Ever notice that on shows like DWTS they never announce the audience vote totals?

        • cynic says:

I can confirm that. My friend’s son was on the show. They had already bought the house and were living in it.

One of the other houses ‘that they looked at to purchase’ was actually owned by the realtor.

          Fake, Fake, Fake

  12. leslie says:

I know some of my clients watch them, but I suppose it makes them feel better about their own lives. 😦
    Gotta work now. BBL

  13. abc says:

I agree about the hypocrisy of media and the homophobia they use to support their points. However the argument that Josh was “their son” doesn’t hold water with me. Some of the kids he molested were also their sons and daughters. If it was about love and protection of their kids, they would have kicked him out and attempted prosecution. It was about greed, pure and simply to me.

But the lovely thing is that I don’t have to choose. I can feel that the media and the Duggar parents are both steaming piles of nastiness and hypocrisy! It is not a dichotomy, thank goodness.

    • Myiq2xu says:

Greed? This all happened years before they started their show.

    • Somebody says:

Wasn’t he 12 years old at the time?? Who in the hell kicks a 12 year old out of their house? Should they have gotten professional help, absolutely…..but kick a minor child out of the house? That’s a bridge too far.

Clearly there wasn’t enough supervision in their household and who would expect there to be with 19 kids. I don’t know anything about the Duggars, but I’m going to guess that all 19 aren’t their biological children. Is that the case or is there actually a woman that birthed 19 kids???

      • mcnorman says:

I had a hard enough time watching over one of my own, a niece and a nephew. I cannot fathom what my life would have been with more than that. I suppose a reality show on losing your marbles could have been an option?

  15. swanspirit says:

At 14, boys can be incredibly immature, and I would venture to guess, that a boy raised in a household where sex is not a topic for discussion , that a child that age could be one of those very immature boys. If children have “exploratory sexual activities” at three and four, no one thinks of abuse , but children are simply redirected in a healthy manner , hopefully.

My own two oldest children, at two and three ; for a summer we lived at the beach, thought it was absolutely hilarious to take off all their clothes and go running down the beach nekkid, because mommy had to chase them and put those little bathing suits or diapers, back on.
Some people were actually offended at the sight of their cherubic nudity. I was just worried about sunburn. Lucky for me , I was a young mother.

Children at puberty, go through a phase where all of their early developmental milestones are repeated in a more mature manner, so they can successfully grow and develop into adults, so what Josh did most likely did was act out some exploration he never did as a younger child , or some very inappropriate puberty exploration. In a sexually repressive household, children aren’t always taught what is appropriate, and some kids act out anyway. Wow kids act out at 14, who is shocked? But if it is sex , somehow an entire sinister layer is added.

What the “Duggars ” who appear to be extreme Christian fundamentalists ; really should have done was get counseling for the entire family, but people of that sect don’t necessarily believe in that, Some do , some don’t. Some absolutely believe that the way to deal with issues of “sin” is to bring it to the Lord.

I don’t even think a professional counselor, such as a LCSW, would have advised turning a child that age into the police. It is obvious from the outcome that Josh was not a pedophile, because he was redirected, maybe not in the healthiest way, but once it was made clear to him that his behavior was not acceptable, he did not compulsively repeat it. The other children and the parents should have and would have benefited from counseling , but so would a whole lot of other people who are currently criticizing them. 😉

I have never watched the show, because I have worked with children from too many similar families ; whose children had other problems, that were different and more serious than what Josh did. And I have seen other similar families whose children were just fine.

I was sorry to see that Megyn did the interview. I admire her greatly, but I just wasn’t interested, and I also felt she was feeding the frenzy. And the children don’t deserve that.
Crazy crap like this makes me want to find a nice secluded beach and go running nekkid by the surf.
