Retro Open Thread

Anybody else feel like they’re living through a 1950s comic book set in modern times? That’s basically how contrived so much of this feels, amIrite?

UPDATE: Investigators are on scene this morning, and a press conference is set for 10 a.m. The Associated Press is reporting that a federal source says preliminary indications show the fire was not arson.

FFS, this is an open thread.

  1. Like the good Pastor in the article, I’m hoping for the best, and we’re apparently both hoping that means not arson. Sadly, with the way this activist president and his minions roll, I suspect many of these fires could be arson for theater sake.

So far, so good…I have to drive in (something I won’t do in rush hour traffic) so that I can get the remainder of my personal stuff. not much, but too much to carry on the train.
      Tonight —> Pink Martini @Ravinia …Yay!!!

  6. votermom says:

If it’s arson I give it 4-1 that it’s a prog doing it.

  7. Myiq2xu says:

    • Possible opportunity for the libertarian plank. Last time this came up the media slammed them as anti-medicine & science, though.

Remember when movie studios controlled the images of their stars?

      • DeniseVB says:

Yep, notice the slobbering Hollywood Progs are getting bombed at the box office. Clooney’s latest movie lost millions. Chris Pratt posted a viral video of him saying the Pledge of Allegiance with his 2 y.o. son and his movie made a billion in 13 days. Coincidence? 😉

    • leslie says:

Wasn’t he married to – or partners with Jenny McCarthy who was opposed to vaccines because of her son’s presumed reaction to vaccines and autism ?

    Klown and Lola,
Need to do thread on the GOP candidates – are we up to 15 now which surely will lead to stage collapse or acid reflux, how many donors and where’s all the money coming from, etc., etc.
I’m taking the day off to play in the dirt (planting hydrangas) and thinking about learning to speak Spanish or Spanglish whatevs.
BTW – Al Gore – it’s sunny here but unseasonablly cool (60s) for July. Send some heat as I want to wear new summer clothes.

    • leslie says:

Get your hoodie on, it’s chilly …I’m just walking out the door and wearing a jacket, jeans and knee socks to stay warm on my way to (the site where I used to) work.

    • DeniseVB says:

The Dem candidates too ! Loving that show. Biden’s being heavily recruited by the classic liberal (is that what we call the normal libs now?) wing of the Dems. Also, Jim Webb looks like a go …. and DiBlasio’s hinting. Still the Warren drama in the chatter too.

2016’s going to be fun! I’m even enjoying the Trumparamadrama. “He’s not a Republican he’s donated to Democrats!!!” Response: “I’m a businessman, I hire lobbyists and I know how to buy politicians!” Zing.

    • I’m taking the day off too. Had a loooooong day yesterday and another long day tomorrow, so I’m flexing out some time today.

I can’t even keep up with the GOP candidates at this time. All I can see is the media trying to promote Jeb and The Donald in order to create easy targets for Hillary. I suspect the GOP is playing a couple rounds of smack-a-gopher or forest-for-trees or whatever you want to call it. The Dems did this in 2008 and as a result didn’t see Obama coming with that offensive ground game in the caucuses. We’ll see how this shakes out, I guess.

      • 1539days says:

Marco Rubio. He is getting the most abuse by the mainstream media. That means he’s the scariest contender to them. I suspect Walker will get abuse when he finally announces, however.

        • That’s my assessment as well, though I’m also seeing some promising reaction on occasion from surprising sources regarding Rand Paul.

Rubios got a beautiful hispanic family and a good story. Walker has a strategy that’s worked in a blue state, and experience, and that compelling story of being a self made man. He can also unite the theocons and attract some libertarians. Rand has a cool name, a famous daddy with a loyal constituency, and the ability to grow this peeexisting base by attracting tead libertarians and the progressive eing concerned about gov overreach and surveillance.

Those 3 are really the core of winning possibilities right now.

  10. jeffhas says:

So how long has this been going on? – and where have I been?

The Girls Scouts are accepting boys:

I’m not sure I really care – I mean my daughter wouldn’t get butt-hurt by a boy in girl scout’s clothing (if she were in the Girl Scouts anymore)…. and let’s face it – any bot that wants to dress up like a girl probably shouldn’t be in the Boy’s Scouts… but….

Oh well… so long as there are still cookies…. Damned Evil Girl Scouts.

  11. jeffhas says:

Boy not Bot… although that coulda been a Freudian slip too.

  12. I keep seeing this pop up in recent days, and it’s always in the context polygamy/polygyny, and not polyandry. And it always get articulated as concerns for the poor, poor beta-males who will lose out on their ostensible right to marry a bitch. No concern is ever expressed for the females in the match or the effects of micro-patriarchy (yes I went there) on them. If you ever needed proof that progressive dude nation exists and is still as sexist as their grandfathers, this is it.

Here’s the problem with it: when a high-status man takes two wives (and one man taking many wives, or polygyny, is almost invariably the real-world pattern), a lower-status man gets no wife. If the high-status man takes three wives, two lower-status men get no wives. And so on.

According to the research, “monogamy’s main cultural evolutionary advantage over polygyny is the more egalitarian distribution of women, which reduces male competition and social problems.”

  13. Update on the church:

Looks like a lightening strike. Did anyone watch the press conference scheduled for 10 am? Did it even happen?

Daily Kos reporting that Climate Change came for the black churches first.
(Not really, not yet anyway. Heh.)

    • Propertius says:

Act of God. Obviously, God is r*cist.

    • Mary says:

Yes re press conference (see post above). Official story is lighting/weather-related. Group commentary afterward (I had CNN on) included that, plus some discussion/hint of insurance fraud, with unofficial sources supplying that info to commentators.
