There is no way to put a pretty face on what goes on at PP. There was no way to put a pretty face on it even before it became public they sell dead baby parts. The only thing they could do was to hide behind words and phrases like “fetus” and “clump of cells”. Science has known for a long time the “clump of cells” begins differentiating into recognizable organs pretty quickly. A baby’s heart starts beating 3 or 4 weeks after conception. Before a lot of women even realize they’re pregnant. Mothers know emotionally the only difference between a fetus and an unborn baby at any stage of development is whether its mother wants it or not. My ob doctor never called either one of my kids “your fetus”. They were my babies from day one of our meeting.

Women like Amanda Marcotte have a right to defend their beliefs about what abortion is and isn’t. But we should be demanding they defend what abortion really is and not let them hide behind a curtain of polite words and phrases. Abortion has always been about stopping the development of a human being by killing it before it has a chance to be born. Maybe women should have the right to do that under any circumstances. Maybe they should be able to do that under some circumstances and not others. Maybe not at all. But don’t try to cover up what they’re doing.

If babies are going to be killed anyway, maybe using their little bodies for something beneficial to others is OK. Maybe it won’t lead to women being used to incubate baby body parts, maybe it will. Maybe PP making some money off of selling baby body parts keeps the cost of healthcare down for poor women. Maybe it pays Cecile Richards a huge salary for running a killing field.

I think this is a conversation we need to have again, but this time let’s talk about the reality of what it is and not cloak it to make it palatable to the masses. Let’s pour a glass of wine and order a salad and talk about just what the “products of conception” are.

      • leslie says:

Thank you, em. What you wrote is so clearly and thoughtfully composed.

To your point re: the poor getting assistance from there… I had a client a few years ago, who was convinced she was pregnant and was in no way capable of, nor did she want to raise a child. She went to PP in downtown Chicago, and they told her that for them to “assist” her to terminate the pregnancy, she had to come up with just under $400. This is a woman who was unable to work, was on medications that would, most likely, interfere with the healthy development of the fetus, was unfunded, and was nearly homeless – she crashed nightly in apartments of acquaintances. $400 could have been $4000 for all she had. They didn’t offer her any other options. As it turned out, she was not pregnant. The home pregnancy test gave a false positive result. Thank goodness. But for Planned Parenthood say they are available for poor women may be a misstatement. OR perhaps it was true at one time – and may even be true now. But at least for this young woman they were neither available nor helpful. I stopped believing in their hype from that time until now.

      • swanspirit says:

Absolutely. With technology advancing so quickly, and our ability to keep preemies alive and healthy, we have to take another look at late term abortions. And we absolutely have to look at selling aborted baby parts.
Who would object to those parts being available to save another infants life if it came down to that? Would that change the perspective? We need new protocols, at the minimum, and probably new laws.
I would object to reducing the autonomy that a woman has over own body, but obviously murdering what is a viable fetus otherwise known as a living baby, has to be addressed . It must be.

      • left_VA_&_dems_for_TX says:

Thank you for your thoughtful comments. It seems that the left is very concerned about and want to discuss what type of nation the US will be when it comes to some issues but MIA on others. We hear all the time about this when it comes to the poor, environment, animals, and the list goes on. Yet it is just about impossible to have a genuine conversation about medical ethics and our future trajectory (even though our health care system is being completely changed by our government – with the support and consent of not even half its citizens).

I think it is just about impossible to have this discussion with PP and its supporters. When I moved, I went to a new OB-GYN. There I got a complete women’s health exam. I was able to get blood work done as well. When I went back we discussed my blood, breast, and pelvic exam results and came up with a game plan about my health now and in the future. I seriously doubt this happens at Planned Parenthood for many reasons….

One reason lies within the name, it says it all. No matter what word-smithing they do in their mission statement they are in the business of preventing or ending pregnancies – period (no pun intended). My guess is that the people working for Planned Parenthood are zealots. And I wonder if the doctors working for them adhere to the tenant of “first, do no harm”. Perhaps it is because of the way the abortion debate has been handled in our country. It has whittled out any moderates at PP who would be willing to sit down and have a thoughtful discussion where they acknowledge the right of people to have concerns. And by listening to these concerns we become a better, more representative, and compassionate nation and they become better at serving the total needs of their clients.

They state that they “provide comprehensive reproductive and complementary health care services” but what does this boil down to? (quote from their website) They tout that abortions are only a small percentage of services they provide but are women really getting quality women’s health care? Is doing an HIV test and giving out free condoms comprehensive quality health care? (Moreover, this is what our tax dollars are funding. Do you need the same level of facility to run a test and hand out pills and condoms that you are supposed to have to safely perform an abortion? Really? The fungibility of their tax-payor funding is a whole other can of worms….) Do their staff have the training, take the time, and have the attitude about women and their potential offspring to provide quality health care, information, and guidance? After hearing and seeing the unscripted and cavalier (and disgusting) comments and attitude evidenced by physician managers of PP clinics, I sincerely doubt it. Management often sets the tone for their organization. Is this how the staff at their clinics act, the way they talk to and treat clients?

“First, do no harm”. This integral philosophy covers the consultations and medical services their clients are provided. How do their clients feel about being part of a body parts chop shop? If different techniques and equipment is used to get at these body parts, how are the personal risks explained and balanced with the potential societal benefit the body parts provide. My sad guess is that they have little actual regard for their clients and care more about their ideology. They probably think their clients are stupid or so hard up they have no where else to go and they give them a cursory exam and consultation (if any) and throw pills and condoms at them or have them spread their legs for an abortion. Why should PP be any different than the Democratic Party? The DP has this attitude when it comes to women and minorities – where else are you going to go….

Whether you’re a fan of the sting videos or not, they have shown that on multiple occasions across the country PP has been willing to do abortions on underage prostitutes (just wrong and illegal on so many levels) and put women through unnecessary procedures to obtain fetal body parts for financial gain (why price haggle if you are only getting what it costs to reimburse the clinic for its expense?). How the hell are they still in business? Because zealotry and ideology of the supposed “democratic” elite trump the real needs of the many.

        Great post, elliesmom. I agree.

      • DeniseVB says:

Those pesky “radical wing-nut pro-lifers” hanging around PP’s are simply handing out alternative adoption information and who to contact. They get a bum rap sometimes as being the crazies. . PP has nothing to do with planning or parenthood. I hate that they’re federally funded and have a political PAC.

I would certainly support funding to make adoptions easier and abortions more difficult. Young, frightened girls shouldn’t have to be torn between family pressure and a carney that runs the local PP. (Remember how the girl in “Juno” was treated at a PP?)

On a personal note, both my kids were in a situation when they called me and I told them, it’s up to you and I will support any decision you make….thank GOD they chose LIFE !

    Good humorous read
“Charlie Kirk: I come from Chicago. And the fun thing about Chicago is we have term limits — one term in office, one term in jail.

Little bit different than most. We have perfected the vote early-vote often model. My grandmother was a Republican precinct committee woman on the north side of town her whole life. She passed away in 1992, and she’s been voting Democrat ever since.

    But unfortunately, it’s true.”

    • elliesmom says:

Charlie Kirk is absolutely right. If Hillary Clinton, or whoever the Democratic candidate is, promises if the Democrats win the election, they will forgive all student loans, the Republicans might as well fold up their tents and go home. I have friends in their 60s who still owe money on student loans. It wouldn’t matter what else was on the table. If a one time vote for a Democrat cleared thousands of dollars off the their plate, they’d vote for him or her in a heartbeat.

      • DeniseVB says:

Well, hopefully it’ll get the conservatives off their butts Nov 2016. I don’t mind giving assistance to deserving poor kids a hand up for their educations, but we have the illegals sucking at our government teats too. Where does it stop?

        • elliesmom says:

I would guess people who worked hard to pay off their student loans would get angry, too, but I don’t know what the over/under is on that one. I paid my kids’ way through college, but if I had thought the government was going to forgive their loans, I might have let them borrow a bundle.

        • 1539days says:

I understand your sentiment, but that would be a perverse incentive. I’ve sacrificed a lot to get my student loans nearly paid off. I know other slackers who will (and are) paying into their 60’s. Forgiving student loan debt makes me and everyone like me a sap for trying to reduce personal debt instead of putting it off. It’s like immigration amnesty. Do it once and everyone will simply wait for the next time.

Brett Favre being criticized for -get ready for this- ‘not applauding long enough for BruceCat Jenner

“In a truly surreal display, NFL great Brett Favre is being denounced by the left’s new cultural commissars for not clapping long and hard enough at ESPN’s ESPY awards, as Bruce/“Caitlyn” Jenner received a “Courage” award for his efforts to become a woman. Oddly, Favre did applaud – not doing so would have been a grave heresy to America’s new church of progressive inquisitors. His sin was not applauding enthusiastically enough.”

Ignore the BS, this is typically dumb campaigning by the Hillary Clinton campaign. Democrats already poll high among women. Hillary may or may not do much better. Remember when Obama was losing the Black vote to Clinton in early 2008 primaries?

Clinton has soft support among the left and she’s going to need to get undecided / independent votes. There’s not too much left to mine in a “womens’ issues” campaign ad.

Yeah, and they are literally using the gender card to answer charges of using the gender card.

I don’t understand why banning abortions after 20 weeks even in cases of rape or incest is an issue. Does a 5 month pregnant woman not know she is pregnant as a result of rape or incest?

Seriously — if you don’t know you are pregnant and/or can’t get yourself to an abortion clinic BEFORE you are 5 months pregnant, I have no sympathy for you.

But then again — I never got that whole fucking “binders full of women” bullshit either.
