#GOPDebate Open Thread: Resurrection Edition

Cornhole is the Official Yard Game of the Grand Old Party.

Tonight is the first GOP debate of the 2012-2016 election season. Featured in the debate will be what I’m calling the Titanic 10. Listed in order of polling are the debaters: Donald Trump; former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush; Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker; former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee; retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson; Texas Sen. Ted Cruz; Florida Sen. Marco Rubio; Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul; New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie; and Ohio Gov. John Kasich.

Personally, I don’t think it’s fair that Chris Christie and John Kasich get to go ahead of Carly Fiorina, especially considering that leaves a dearth of women on a field sadly in need of one, but it’s not my pony show, so whatevs.

The debate will air on FOX News, so that’s whatever channel that is in your area. The show starts at 9:00 pm EDT. The only live stream of the debate available will be through Fox news, so you’ll need your cable access login and password to watch that way. If you don’t have one, too late, rookie! But there will be lots and lots of after-talk on every channel or online forum you can imagine as everybody tries to get  in on this freakshow.

The coolest after-AFTER party will be at This American Election on Blog Talk Radio at 11:00 pm EDT, with your hosts, myself and our dear friend Anthony. We’ve been off the air for three years, so we’re going to ease into it at a leisurely pace of just 30 minutes. We will, of course, be taking your calls!

Call in to speak with the host (323) 870-3783

I’m abstaining so I can moderate (*snort*) this forum and speak straight for the show. This is a sacrificial act, so please toast me with whatever wine or liquor you may have on hand. Your drunkenness will not officially count as an act of transubstantiation, but you didn’t really want me that far in your head, amirite??? There are no drinking rules for this debate, so just like Joe Biden, your instructions are to drink voluminously.

This is an open thread. When we get to about 125+ comments or so, I’ll post a new thread.

Sarah’s statement on IRS’ Bristol targetting

    • I saw that. Can’t say I’m surprised. Did you catch this tidbit at the end of the article?

“Look my view is that Lincoln was our worst president not our best,” she told a friend in 2014, after she left the IRS. “He should (have) let the south go. We really do seem to have 2 totally different mindsets.”

      • lyn says:

        Evil bitch.

        • 1539days says:

Or really dumb. The South was the economic center for the US. Had they seceeded, slavery would have ended a few decades later with automation, but the North would have become an economically weak, highly progressive nation that probably would have signed a treaty with Hitler.

  3. lyn says:

I’ll be listening to you and Anthony. I don’t have cable, so I won’t be watching the debate. Carly should have been included.

  4. driguana says:

So, I got 1. Carly Fiorina 2. Rick Perry 3. George Pataki……that’s bizarre….doesn’t matter though because Perry and Pataki don’t have a shot but they are lending importance to the debate…which is one good reason to have so many people in it….lots of very controversial issues are going to be discussed….finally. I wasn’t really intending to watch it but ended up seeing the whole thing. Interesting…even this second tier of the Republicans is way more diverse than the Democrat candidates. Fascinating. The next one will surely send the twitter world atwitter.

I didn’t even know Jim Gilmore was running until today. I liked him — he looks (and sounds) a lot like my dearly departed paw paw.🙂

  5. SHV says:

Glad the Anna Belle show is back on the “air”; unfortunately Al and I are in London and it’s now 1:15 AM and This American Election come on at 4:00 AM.

  6. angienc says:

The mini-debate might end up helping Carly more. She outshone everyone there so it will help her build momentum and she may have gotten “lost in the crown” in the main debate where all focus will be on Trump and Jeb!

I’m sure she’ll be in the main debate when a few of these assclowns peel off after fucking up tonight.

  7. insanelysane says:

Carly was measured and well prepared. She speaks beautifully. She knows all the players in the Middle East and Asia. She is more connected to the global vibe than anyone . She directly addressed Hillary. She will be a major force in this election. I like what I heard.

    • leslie says:

I’m with right there with you. Megyn Kelly just said, the men in the 2nd debate should be grateful Carly wasn’t in their tier because “She unloaded a can in the earlier . . . if you know what I’m saying”.

  8. driguana says:

Oh, and I wanted to make a brief comment on the Cornhole picture. My extended, 19 first-cousin, family has a reunion every three years just outside of Xenia, Ohio. We’re all born in Cincinnati. Well I missed two of them but finally got to the one in 2011. It’s a great family so it’s always a great gathering. But that time I attended I was flabbergasted that the big event of the 3 day affair turned out to be a family Cornhole competition! On a farm ensconced in corn!!! How fitting, I thought. It turned out to be a very serious event. Almost everyone participated until there was a Cornhole champ. I came in the 4th best Cornholer in the family!!! Not bad for my first time and not having any previous Cornhole experience. From what I saw even in a mostly liberal family, Cornhole enthusiasm may have already become the favorite pastime. .

  9. insanelysane says:

The Ex-governor of VA seems to have a lot of credentials and gravitas. The guy just jumped in a few days ago and I am glad to see this wisdom in the line up.
OTOH, Lindsay Graham was a one noter. Fight a serious ground war to defeat ISIL bar nothing. Fight to win. I am sure he will have a following for that.
    Interesting hour.

  10. Myiq2xu says:

Where I come from “cornhole” means something completely different.

    • votermom says:

Yeah, I was thinking the same. LOL

    • We took that picture at a quick flea market stop in Elkhart, which is in northern Indiana. My husband immediately said, “If only they had a Virgin Mary cornhole.”

I was already aware of the other cornhole. I’m sure a crown of thorns would not be fitting in that case. LOL

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: I will not vote for Jeb! even if you held a gun to my head.

Not even Carly in the VP slot will save a Jeb! ticket for me.

  17. Chris Christie cannot be happy with his placement on the stage. Full-body shot.

And Trump, right out of the gate!!

  18. angienc says:

    Carly/Carson 2016!

  19. Veto Corleone. That’s funny!

  20. Alright for Megan Kelly challenging Trump on his trashy language with females.

  21. mcnorman says:

Oh oh, the Donald is showing thin skin.

  22. leslie says:

    Cruz/Carly 2016

  23. mcnorman says:

Is Fox making this a walk in the park for legacy boy? I think he got a real softball.

  24. Rand Paul is not ready for prime time.

  25. mcnorman says:

I feel like I’m watching one of Trumpj’s beauty pageants. You know, when they get the question that they have practiced a bizillion times.

  26. angienc says:

Giving your money to “ROME” to care for sick & poor is NOT the same as YOU taking care of the sick and poor, Kasich.

  27. Kasich pitching at cross-demographics.

  28. angienc says:

    Fuck off Jeb!

  29. mcnorman says:

Oh shoot, Jeb is spewing bs. E verify allowed a guy in CO to use my BIL’s ss number. It doesn’t do shite.

  30. mcnorman says:

Typical Donald…will he ask Jeb if his wife has papers. You go Donald!!

  31. mcnorman says:

I live on the border. The MSM NEVER reports on the crap that we go through daily. The facts are that Mexico does NOT lose its best and brightest. When the drug wars started, the Mexican border towns emptied quickly. They moved to the US where a majority of them have dual citizenship. Even El Chapo’s children have US citizenship. He made sure that his spouse delivered his spawn in LA.

  32. 1539days says:

Ouch. Trump donated to Nancy Pelosi.

  33. WTF was THAT from Huckabee? Primps, prostitutes, drug dealers, and the 1% are all to pay the consumption tax.

  34. helenk3 says:

Ben Carson is a pleasant surprise. I did not really pay attention to his run before.

I still like a Walker- Cruz ticket.

  35. helenk3 says:

Trump has made the people running talk about issues that interest the American people. for that reason I think he is needed for now. Do I want him for president NO. Do I want him around to keep the politicians in line YES.

    • mcnorman says:

I believe that many feel this way as well helenk. He really knows how to twist those arms. I like that. I don’t think that the man wants the job. I do think that he is very sincere about his love for this country. It has made him live the American Dream.

      • helenk3 says:

when was last time someone running for office really got what Americans were thinking and what they want politicians to do when elected

    • Constance says:

      I agree Helenk3.

    • Lulu says:

I completely agree. And I thank him for drawing the fury of the elites so citizens can be heard. They are livid with him for being a traitor to his class. I remember reading the horrible stuff wealthy and aspiring (bootlickers) elites said about FDR when his administration were trying to deal with the Great Depression and the enormous unemployment. It is actually worse now but the same kind of people are saying the same kind of things.

  36. Myiq2xu says:

    Megyn goes for the juggler:

  37. DandyTIger says:

You can see FoxNews biases showing in the questions and who they’re giving almost no time to. They’re so establishment. No surprise of course. But there are still some fun sparks flying. Too bad they won’t ask Carson any questions.

  38. angienc says:

Said it before, I’ll say it again:

    Carly/Carson 2016!

  39. Tellya who is pissing me off is Christie. What a douche.

  40. I want to thank 1539days for the call in! We’ve broken the seal on the show, though, and I’ve scheduled the next one for Sunday for a fuller discussion of the media reaction. More details later.

    • 1539days says:

Sure. I love to ramble. I should probably register so I can use the chat room.

    • piper says:

Walker is more of a doer than good speaker. He’s a bit flat but I’ve liked and voted for him since he ran for Milwaukee County Supervisor.

  41. Mary says:

OT: CNN reporting Chuck Schumer will vote AGAINST Obama’s Iran deal.

    Ruh roh…..

    • 1539days says:

Daaamn. I guess I have to suspend my loathing for my Senator for a few weeks.

      • Mary says:

Srsly. Not in a million years did I think Schumer would make this choice.

        • Lulu says:

They have the votes for yes or he wouldn’t be doing this. I suspect his little old Jewish ladies demographic told him if he votes yes his ass is grass. The Republicans will vote yes.

          • lyn says:

Yep, Obama does all his trash talkin’ when he knows he’ll get what he wants. I hope voters throw out anyone who votes for the Iran deal. We are waking up to the one-party rule. Baby steps.

    Trump on Hannity

  45. NewOrleans says:

    Who ‘won’ the debate?

According to the nearly 260,000 votes on Drudge Report, The Donald did. He’s currently at 44%. Cruz is at #2 with 14%.

At RightScoop, it’s The Donald at #1 with 41%. Carson is #2 with 15%.

At the National Republican Senatorial Committee’s poll, it’s, yep, The Donald at 48%. Cruz and Rubio are tied for 2nd at 10%.

Clearly, it was a bad night for Donald Trump.

  46. Lulu says:

Media stock value is collapsing due to fewer and fewer viewers leading to collapsing ad market.
“Until Tuesday, media shares were the best-performing shares of the bull market, rising 531 percent to eclipse automakers, retail stores and banks. The industry’s market capitalization was about $650 billion, compared with $135 billion in March 2009”
“That value is evaporating. In just five stocks — Disney, Time Warner Inc., Fox, CBS and Comcast Corp. — almost $50 billion of value was erased in two days. Viacom slid 14 percent on Thursday alone, its biggest drop since October 2008.” http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-08-06/media-wipeout-taking-down-pillar-of-bull-market-in-u-s-stocks
We have shit media in this country and now it is catching up with them. I want to see their salaries slashed to nothing. No eyeballs, no ads, no salaries. Cause and effect. Go broke.

Box of cheap white wine = feeling like shit dipped in misery.
My hazy recollection of last night. Carly kicking ass. The Donald staying alive. Jeb needs viagra. Walker and Cruz still worth a gander. Seriously hungover me grasps what bothers me about Walker. I feel the need to defend him. You know how your mom no mater your age throws her arm across you in a car. Instincts she protects. I am 48 and my mother still does it. Makes no sense as I know Walker can take care of himself but he arouses my need to protect him. I like the guy but I could never put my finger on what bothered me. In vino veritas. My limited brain is so addled from wine that it allows me to take a different look. I get Scott Walker stood up and fought hard but he evokes my older brother instinct. I want to shield him. I am hungover/slash drunk so for me right now I see Scott as weak. I see a great guy but I do not see a leader. Trump takes no prisoners. He does not waffle. Face it most people project on a candidate. I am an asshole I like Trump because he speaks like I yell at my tv. None of the other boobs speaks to me. Fucking liars. Please tell me how relocating dozens of people from Nepal does not effect school budgets. Icky is a vegatarian. Very expensive. The social justice warriors are insane. I am racist for not buying garbage school lunches. Shit is amazing. I am racist because I provide a healthy veg menu at no cost to the school. I could buy the lunches and force them to accommodate her. They would have to create a daily new menu or could scream discrimination. Huh this is insanity. Progressives run amok. Vegan thing annoys me mostly because I lack the imagination. Kid realised one day meat came from animals and she stopped eating it. She was 7 i thought it’ll pass. Nope will be 9 soon. Her dad on his visits tells her eat
    meat or starve.
Off topic if you are ever involved in a custody hearing go all out. Three years of 750 an hour. Baby girl won MVP at every championship. Guy saw her dad at one of her games. He said, a complete stranger, no. Zero charge. I think social services is a joke. My nephew lets his dad sleep on his sofa. He was Alleghney County’s most wanted. Two days after a high end Private Investigator he sent me 800 pages. Fucking guy is doing it for free because he saw how scary my nephew is.
I cannot express how much the fight has cost. He was ordered a psych eval but he will not comply.
If you ever find youself in jeopardy pay for a good lawyer because bad cheap lawyers suck.
