Tech company: No indication that Clinton’s e-mail server was ‘wiped’

The company that managed Hillary Rodham Clinton’s private e-mail server said it has “no knowledge of the server being wiped,” the strongest indication to date that tens of thousands of e-mails that Clinton has said were deleted could be recovered.

Clinton and her advisers have said for months that she deleted her personal correspondence from her time as secretary of state, creating the impression that 31,000 e-mails were gone forever.

There is a distinction between e-mails’ being deleted and a server being wiped. If e-mails are deleted or moved from a server, they appear to no longer exist on the device. But experts say, depending on the condition of the server, underlying data can remain on the device, and the e-mails can often be restored.

To make the information go away permanently, a server must be wiped — a process that includes overwriting the underlying data with gibberish, possibly several times.

That process, according to Platte River Networks, the Denver-based firm that has managed the system since 2013, apparently did not happen.

Clinton and her staff have avoided directly answering whether the server was ever wiped.

In a memorable exchange at a campaign event in Las Vegas last month, Clinton turned aside a question about whether the server had been wiped with a joke: “Like what, with a cloth?” she said, adding, “I don’t know how it works digitally at all.”

Campaign spokesman Brian Fallon gave a similar answer this month, telling CNN: “I don’t know what ‘wiped’ means. Literally the e-mails were deleted off of the server, that’s true.”

Remember all those times you accidentally deleted something and you thought it was gone forever? It wasn’t. That’s why cops always seize computers when they raid homes and businesses.

There is a specialty called “computer forensics”:

Computer forensics is the application of investigation and analysis techniques to gather and preserve evidence from a particular computing device in a way that is suitable for presentation in a court of law.

My oldest child (Klown Jr.) has a degree in computer forensics and is starting his own business. But there is an even more advanced specialty that deals with recovering information from things like partially destroyed hard drives. The people who do that job mostly work for the NSA or some other spook shop.

If Hillary’s server wasn’t wiped, all you need is a simple software program to recover data from it.

Suddenly Hillary’s joke about wiping the server with a cloth takes on new significance. When dealing with a Clinton always parse their words carefully and assume that there are no accidents or coincidences.

I see three possibilities here:

1. The story is wrong and the server was wiped clean.

2. The story is correct but there is nothing incriminating or embarrassing on the server because “servergste” is all some VRWC fantasy.

3. The story is correct, incriminating evidence is found and Hillary’s goose is cooked.

Stayed tuned for further developments.

    Guardian:

Barack Obama’s intelligence chief is said to be in frequent and unusual contact with a military intelligence officer at the center of a growing scandal over rosy portrayals of the war against the Islamic State, the Guardian has learned.

James Clapper, the director of national intelligence, is said to talk nearly every day with the head of US Central Command’s intelligence wing, Army Major General Steven Grove – “which is highly, highly unusual”, according to a former intelligence official.

Grove is said to be implicated in a Pentagon inquiry into manipulated war intelligence.

In communications, Clapper, who is far more senior than Grove, is said to tell Grove how the war looks from his vantage point, and question Grove about Central Command’s assessments. Such a situation could place inherent pressure on a subordinate, sources said.

Knowledgeable former officials are doubtful that Clapper directly intends to manipulate intelligence. And they do not say that the director of national intelligence – who apologized to his Senate overseers in 2013 for publicly misleading Congress on the scope of domestic surveillance – ordered Grove or anyone else to change the command’s assessment of the war.

But one former intelligence official said Clapper “has to be careful of the Cheney effect, going over to the CIA and how does that affect people” – a reference to pressure felt by CIA analysts before the 2003 Iraq invasion to portray Saddam Hussein as posing a more dire threat than he actually did, following then Vice-President Dick Cheney’s direct interaction with far more junior analysts and officials.

“He can be manipulative,” a former senior defense official said of Clapper. For Clapper as a senior US intelligence officer with access to assessments across the 16 US intelligence agencies to query Grove, the Central Command intelligence chief, the ex-official said, “something’s wrong”.

Clapper’s calls, knowledgeable sources speaking on condition of anonymity said, placed Grove in a difficult bureaucratic position: between the nominal leader of the entire US intelligence apparatus and his lower-level analysts, several of whom consider the year-long war against Isis to be in dire straits.

Grove and his civilian deputy, Greg Ryckman, are said to be the sources of dissatisfaction among analysts within Central Command, where an internal controversy about integrity in intelligence has now sparked an official inquiry by the Pentagon inspector general.

There is a custom in the military that at staff meetings they always start with the lowest ranking officer when they want ideas, opinions and reactions, then they work their way up the line. That way junior officers aren’t put in a position to criticize or disagree with the commanding officer.

If you start with the general’s opinion, everybody else feels pressured to agree with him.

The Marines are in deep doo-doo with Obama too. Seems the infantry battalions with women are underperforming those battalions with all men. There are so many other jobs in the USMC that women can perform better than men, not sure why it’s so important to put them in ground combat situations ?

      http://www.businessinsider.com/r-all-male-squads-outperform-ones-with-women-us-marines-study-2015-9

Of course, USMC wife is the toughest job of all 😉

      • AFVet says:

        Agree Denise.
Women don’t have to serve in ground combat positions.
They have been proven to be excellent pilots both fixed and rotary.
If she wants to be a ground pounder, pass the test.

        • DeniseVB says:

Wonder if they still have separate boot camps for men and women? I’m sure the PT quals aren’t the same. So the joint training should start at that level you’d think?

          • AFVet says:

            I would imagine they do.
It’s been a long time since I was in boot camp,….’69.
Wait til they try to coed the barracks.

      • SHV says:

IIRC, there was an article in NYT a few years ago about the difficulty of getting current military recruits physically fit enough for combat after being sedentary for most of their lives. The majority of injuries that required evac. from Afghanistan were due to broken bones, joint injuries, etc. and women sustained these injuries 4 times the rate as men. It was speculated that women lacked the muscle mass that helps protect bones and joints from stress, such as carrying a 70 pound pack and jumping into a ditch.

After reading that article and then researching how much weight “ground pounders” carry in combat, I don’t think that this particular social experiment is going to have a positive outcome.

        • SHV says:

” The study found all-male squads were faster in each tactical movement than those with both genders, according to the summary. The differences were greater when they were carrying heavy weapons and ammunition.

Also, all-male rifle groups had better accuracy than integrated squads, according to the summary. And women had more injuries such as stress fractures.”

“In an interview with NPR, Mabus (Sec. of the Navy) states that the report is, if not flawed, then not in keeping with his broader view that a “more diverse force is a stronger force. A more diverse mindset makes you a stronger force. If you have the same outlook, if you have the same mindset, you don’t get much innovation.”
          *****
Ray Mabus’s qualifications for potentially sacrificing parents’ sons and daughters lives for “diversity” is a Harvard Law degree, two years in the Navy and Dem. Gov. of Mississippi.

          • Myiq2xu says:

My experience with the Marine Corps is that they aren’t real big on diversity or innovation.

If the narrative won’t fit, blame it on the troops. One can always keep going through the promote-demote cycle until eventually finding SOMEONE to agree with SJW biases. Tactical proficiency is sooo overrated, anyway.

” The differences were greater when they were carrying heavy weapons and ammunition.”

In combat, who needs a SAW or ammunition when the squad has diversity!!

One of my many hats at work involves PCI compliance. This is a merchant issue mostly, but it involves the security of data. If Hillary had a government e-mail address, that mail would be distributed by a government server. The server would have a record of those e-mails as the “post master” based on transparency laws. By using a “clintonemail.com” domain and owning an off-site server, there is no chain of custody. She could delete (or even create) e-mail at will.

Chain of custody is important here. When we talk about the server, the only important part is the hard drive. A forensic analysis could find a “random” data patterns in the hard drive data consistent with a DOD 5220.22 overwrite. I assume they can also log instances of “secure erase” ATA commands issued to the drive.

If I wanted to fake a virgin drive, I would delete what I didn’t want anyone to see on a drive, then copy ONLY the non-incriminating data to a second drive. This goes back to chain of custody. The company who managed Clinton’s server said they “had no knowledge” of it being wiped. That weasel wording indicates that they didn’t have it in their possession at some point before it was handed over. No one with the government has officially said the same thing.

One last thing. This isn’t about e-mail. This is about how Hillary botched Benghazi.

I think it has reached the point of adolescent level defiance to continue doing this stuff.
