Here Comes Joaquin!

Hurricane Joaquin gained power as it bore down on the central Bahamas early Thursday, and forecasters said it was likely to grow into a major storm while following a path that would near the U.S. East Coast by the weekend.

Some minor damage was reported by Bahamas officials late Wednesday, and islanders rushed to prepare for storm surges and heavy rain from the approaching Joaquin. Authorities said the center was likely to pass near or over several islands during the night and Thursday.

Joaquin was a Category 3 storm with maximum sustained winds of 115 mph and hurricane strength winds extending 35 miles from the eye late Wednesday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said. The center of the storm was about 170 miles east of the central Bahamas and moving southwest at 6 mph.

The storm was predicted to turn to the north and northwest toward the United States late Thursday or Friday, but forecasters were still gathering data trying to determine how it might affect the U.S.

Is it too much to ask that it would hit land right at the mouth of the Potomac river? Or the Hudson?

    Uh oh!

In September 2015, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton styles herself as a staunch defender of gay rights — particularly gay parental rights. “I’m proud of you!” she told a gay man last April, after he explained how he and his partner had adopted a little girl together.

But four years ago, Clinton was singing a very different tune. An e-mail included in the latest tranche of Clinton documents released by the State Department on Wednesday shows the then-secretary of state exploding at her staff over plans to replace “Mother” and “Father” with “Parent One” and “Parent Two” on passport application forms, complaining about the decision and refusing to defend it in the face of partisan opposition.

Clinton learned about the change through a January 7, 2011 article in The Washington Post. But the policy shift was first announced in a December 2010 press release from the State Department. “These improvements are being made to provide a gender-neutral description of a child’s parents and in recognition of different types of families,” the statement read.

The next day, Clinton sent an early-morning e-mail excoriating top aides Cheryl Mills and Jake Sullivan for the secretive policy shift. “I’m not defending that decision, which I disagree w and knew nothing about, in front of this Congress,” she wrote. “I could live w letting people in nontraditional families choose another descriptor so long as we retained the presumption of mother and father. We need to address this today or we will be facing a huge Fox-generated media storm led by [Sarah] Palin et al.”

Mills quickly responded, promising she would be “reaching out to folks to find out” who made the decision to axe “Mother” and “Father.” Within days, the new, gender-neutral language had been dropped from all U.S. passport applications.

Like President Obama, Clinton claims her position on gay rights has evolved over the years. She was steadfastly opposed to same-sex marriage from her time as First Lady until 2013, when she shifted her views along with a majority of the country. She celebrated the June 2015 Supreme Court decision to legalize same-sex marriage nationwide, and chided Republican opponents of the ruling.

One of my former student’s husband is in prison on a long sentence for trafficking in child pornography. There was suspicion he had helped create the photos and videos, but the government was unable to prove that part of their case. She keeps waiting for the other shoe to drop when some little girl steps up and confirms her suspicions. He seemed so “normal” it came as a shock to everyone. But she agrees he’s where he’s supposed to be.

I’m leaving tomorrow for an out of town wedding. It will be a break from all ^this^ nonsense. Of course, the family will want to bait me into talking politics. It’s happened before. They remain obots – with one even saying the Iran “deal” is great and that wiping Israel “off the face of the map” would be an added bonus. (The entire side of my father’s family is Jewish and fled Europe to stay alive. So I have no idea what they are thinking.)
    I can’t wait. /s/

My freaky flashback pic of George Clooney is from the long, long ago time when he accompanied his mom, Nina, to get her hair styled at the beauty shop where I worked. The owner was a very talented hairdresser who was popular with many of the local daytime teevee talk show entertainers. A younger close friend was employed as a part time general helper in the shop. One of her responsibilities was to keep an eye on George when he came in with his mom, even though she was only a few years older than he. Obviously he didn’t get his hair cut where his mom did!

If driguana is in the house, he probably remembers the golden era of local midwestern pioneering teevee talk show entertainers and news anchors including: Ruth Lyons, Bob Braun, Paul Dixon, Bonnie Lou, Nick Clooney, Colleen Sharp, Phil Donahue and Jerry Springer (former mayor). When the infamous rubber chickens got married on the Paul Dixon show, my boss styled the wig the “bride” wore and most of the female entertainer attendants. Can’t believe I am now older than dirt, but can still remember these names from long ago!

    • Somebody says:

Oh my, bowl cut with uneven bangs and those glasses! Funny though in the face he still looks the same, except his teeth are picture perfect and pearly white now.

The fucking media will show a dead child washed up on a beach or a journalist being beheaded by ISIS, but they have to beep or censor the word “bullshit.” It’s so ridiculous.

Regarding what Trump said about Bush/Rubio: This over at Breitbart:

“Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush swiped at his former political pupil, Sen. Marco Rubio, by accusing him of not being ready to lead the country and also by comparing him to President Barack Obama.”

So . . . Trump was right. Again.

I live on the east side of the Cascades, but Roseburg is a small community like mine in southern Oregon. Very sad.

          • Jadzia says:

The Roseburg area was always one of my favorite parts of Oregon. So beautiful. Until today, so peaceful. The hometown of that brave young man, Alex Skarlatos, who saved all those people on the train this summer. I was sitting in bar review in Eugene during the Thurston shooting. This one looks a lot worse.

And I fucking hate that I am saying “this one.” Because there have been so many. Even in little places like Roseburg and Springfield that no one much cares about.

          • lyn says:

Wow–you were close when Kip Kinkel went crazy. How do you stop violence in people’s hearts and minds?

          • Jadzia says:

I don’t know. Thurston was an awful day. One of my husband’s friends (who’s a little younger than we are, obviously) was there when it happened. The people who are right there (as opposed to the keyboard warrior brigade) usually just have to come together and support each other as a community.

It’s a horrible thing to say, but I’ll say it. Upon returning to Eugene about ten years after Thurston, Springfield (which everybody seems to like to rag on for not much reason besides its relative poverty and non-hippiness) struck me as a much more unified, livable community than Eugene did. Correlation isn’t causation, but it felt like there was some sense of people wanting to move forward and make Springfield more than its tragedy.

          • lyn says:

The Eugene-Springfield dichotomy is an interesting one, and your observation is so true.

          • leslie says:

I just watched Greta interview Alex Skarlatos who was supposed to be in class today but was on DWTS instead.
I also read on Breitbart or conservative treehouse or somewhere that this could’ve been payback for Skarlatos heroic actions in France last month.
Who knows…. only the shooter and he’s dead.

Huge Brawl Erupts at Barack Obama School of Career and Technical Education

    Obama’s America:

Milwaukee police responded to Barack Obama School of Career and Technical Education on Wednesday afternoon, September 30th for an altercation.

Officers were dispatched to the school shortly before 2:30 p.m. to back up school resource officers.

Police say there were 30 to 40 students and outsiders fighting inside the school.

    No major injuries were reported.

We’re told a pregnant student, who was being evaluated by a paramedic and apparently didn’t want to leave the fight, kicked a pregnant paramedic.

You should all be shocked to discover this school, like its namesake, is a colossal failure.

According to data from the state Department of Public Instruction, for the 2013-2014 academic year the school, listed as Obama Elementary, scored 39.4 out of 100. On a grading scale, that means Obama Elementary is well below failing. Only 14 schools faired worse on the state report card.

“Fails to Meet Expectations” reads the entry next to the school’s score. Each school’s score is calculated by looking at specific student achievement in areas like reading and math, and the school’s ability to improve student scores, among other things. Obama Elementary had its worst score in reading achievement, which came in at 2.2 out of 50.

    Fails to meet expectations? Unexpected!

    • DeniseVB says:

I’m thinking Joaquin is going to wiggle easterly and away from the coast (watching the Euro model which is always more accurate than ours). We’re being told they can’t predict for sure until tomorrow … to the media’s glee “ad revenues up for another 24hrs!” ).

      • Mt.Laurel says:

I loved the picture of all the models last night. 1001 were all over the map. The euro stood on its own going out to sea. Although depending on the track it could backlash onto the coast. Or it could turn out to be one of those nifty storms that doubles back. I hope it is not the later or they will just be overly gleeful about the imminent demise of the known universe (know as the East Coast).

The Nor’easter going though tomorrow so that is likely to cause far more immediate problems after all the rain we got over the past three days.

I looked around for a busted pipe or sprinkler head but there was nothing. I was scared so I sacrificed one of my neighbor’s goats. It must have worked because afterwards the water drops stopped falling and the clouds went away.

I think it was a sign of the apocalypse.

And BTW: In September alone there were 90 murders – the most since 2002. (or is it 2012?) but what difference, at this point, does it make?
