David Bowie RIP

Hollywood Reporter:

Legendary Artist David Bowie Dies at 69

David Bowie has died after a battle with cancer, his rep confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter. He was 69.

“David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18-month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief,” read a statement posted on the artist’s official social media accounts.

The influential singer-songwriter and producer excelled at glam rock, art rock, soul, hard rock, dance pop, punk and electronica during his eclectic 40-plus-year career. He just released his 25th album, Blackstar, Jan. 8, which was his birthday.

If you were alive in the 70’s and 80’s you know who David Bowie was. If I had to use one word to describe him it would be “unique”. He was truly one of a kind.

Rest in peace.

I adored him. I really thought if anyone lived forever,it would be Ziggy Stardust. Such a sad day. Life without David Bowie would have been so dull.

This was the first thing that came into my head when hearing of Bowie’s passing, just a fun, crazy, and voted “gayest video” ever, lol. Two icons, circa 1985. RIP David Bowie (sorry I kept getting you mixed up with Sting all these years).

I don’t know so much that we’re seeing a rise of the tea party. I think we seeing a backlash; an anti-incumbent, anti-politician, tired of being lied to sentiment from many sectors of the republican electorate, not just the tea party. People are tired of the cabal and truthfully there isn’t much difference between the R’s and the D’s.

      • piper says:

        So true!

        • Somebody says:

Yes it is true, but what is the answer??? How do we fix it?? You could turn over every seat in Congress and 90% of them would be corrupt bastards inside of 6 months. It’s the system, but how do we change that without infringing on our own rights to be heard by our representatives?? I’ve always thought a convention of the states was crazy talk, but honestly that is the only way I see anything changing and that scares me because it could be good…….it could be bad.

      • driguana says:

Yes, and it hasn’t really started to foment yet, has it? Going to be interesting.

      • cynic says:

In 2009, there was an election – NY 23. Does anyone else remember the story? A Republican held the seat, but he was one of only 8 Republicans that voted in favor of Cap & Trade that summer, and he was not going to run again. That seat was open, and the candidates running were, Dede Scozzafava (R), Doug Hoffman (Conservative), and Bill Owens (D). This was going on during all the TEA Party protests, but instead of backing the Conservative, the GOPE backed the moderate, Dede. Newt endorsed her, and at the time, said this:
“The Republican Revolution in 1994 started very much like what we see today,” Gingrich said in his statement. “Like then, our country is reeling from misguided liberal policies, high taxes and out-of-control spending. This special election in New York’s 23rd Congressional District could be the first election of the new Republican Revolution, but we need the momentum to get it started.”
Yea, the revolution, to him, was electing the moderate!

Doug Hoffman went on to beat Dede in the primary, to go up against Owens. At that time, Scozzafava went on to endorse the Democrat!

Owens sold the voters the story that he was a Blue Dog Democrat, and he would vote against the Health Care Bill. He won the election, and immediately after he was sworn into office, he lied to the voters on several items, with one of them being how he would vote for Health Care.

This was the start of the eye-opening tricks that the GOPE pulled.

Then you had the write-in for moderate Lisa Murkowski in Alaska, and the run-off between Thad Cochran and Chris McDaniel in Mississippi.

There is a reason we are fed up with the GOPE! We see how hard it is to elect someone not chosen by the establishment, and all celebrated when we got rid of Eric Cantor.

        • 1539days says:

That election was close to home (literally) for me. Some of the strange parts of the story are that 1. The previous Republican was pretty squishy because he was actually tapped by the Obama Administration which left his seat vacant. 2. Soczzafava was selected by 11 county GOP reps in a secret meeting. 3. Scozzafava was also a member of the Working Families (ACORN, Union, Left wing) Party. 4. Hoffman was the GOP nominee the next time and still lost to Owens. 5. NY-23 doesn’t exist anymore, having been reapportioned into NY-21 since New York lost 2 House seats due to the dwindling population numbers in the last Census.

I’ve been waiting for this. Over a year ago, I watched a documentary about Gaddafi’s plans to create a gold-backed African currency. That’s why he had to be eliminated. Is the truth finally coming out?

Hillary Emails Reveal True Motive for Libya Intervention

Newly disclosed emails show that Libya’s plan to create a gold-backed currency to compete with the euro and dollar was a motive for NATO’s intervention.

    • piper says:

Nothing would surprise me any longer.

    • Somebody says:

I heard about that back when the whole leading from behind intervention was going on. At the time I thought it had to be a crazy conspiracy theory, but maybe not. If I remember correctly the Gaddafi was quietly getting OPEC members on board and he was reaching or had reached the tipping point so supposedly he had to go. Weapons provided by the Saudis and Qatar, training by the US or so the story goes.

      • Myiq2xu says:

We provided the weapons, SA and Q just paid for them so they wouldn’t show up on the books. That’s what Chris Stevens was doing in Benghazi – buying back our weapons (and shipping them to Syria)

Someone must be footing the bill for this mansion bec. we all know that Bronco doesn’t pay for anything out of his own pocketbook. And where may I ask, is Mrs. Moochelle going to live?

    • Somebody says:

If true, it says the property was purchased by the Podesta group. It could be that the team from Camp David was dispatched to secure it for someone else, it wouldn’t necessarily mean it was for Obama…….Someone else like maybe the Clintons??? The Epstein case is opening up again and supposedly the FBI is ready to press charges. I’m just speculating, but I don’t see anything that specifically says the place is for Obama. It could well be for some other dignitary, maybe it’s just being set up as a launching pad so to speak for his upcoming world tour???

          • Somebody says:

Once he suffered from a weak bladder and took them to the bathroom with them. He had to go before he could manage to go to the car and fetch his laptop. I get so pissed at him about messing with those people. I jump to get the phone if he’s home so I can just hang up on them. My husband will spend an hour messing with those people.

David Bowie was quite an extraordinary performing artist…always fun, unpredictable and groovy. When I arrived in Santa Fe in late ’74/early ’75, they had just finished shooting The Man Who Fell to Earth and Bowie was still hanging out a bit. He apparently really liked Santa Fe. The opening scene, as shown in the trailer, shows him (or maybe a stunt person, not sure) coming down a coal tipple in the little town of Madrid, just south of Santa Fe. It was a great scene and that area is now a thriving little tourist community with a great bar and restaurant. Quite a few films have been shot there…recently Wild Hogs….https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfccDapMA14

I don’t know that I care so much, but I do see people on the right asking/suggesting that Ted Cruz get a declarative statement of some sort from the courts. That’s a whole lot more then the Democrats ever asked of Obama – of course McCain was paralyzed by the mere thought of accusations of racism, he played his role of transitional patsy quite well.

      • DeniseVB says:

The Dems have the Cruz Birther ammo in their General Election arsenal, actually pounding out the details now could help him in the future.

      • Somebody says:

If Cruz were black or brown?? Then they report well actually he is Latino, but he appears white. I guess that makes Cruz a half white hispanic??? Since his mom is white and he appears to be of white hispanic origin does that make him a white, white hispanic??

      • SHV says:

This is a good opportunity for SCOTUS to define “Natural Born” and end the uncertainty.

        • DeniseVB says:

I know the children of military, diplomats or other federal overseas jobs were the only exception to not being born on American soil. I never heard of “at least one parent should be a citizen”. Clarifying or updating would be nice. I think the founding fathers meant natural born to exclude foreigners from coming over to the new country and try to be King?

Until Obama, it’s worked out pretty well 😀

          • Venus says:

That’s how I grew up “knowing” the definition too — the children of US citizens in the military, diplomats or other federal oversees jobs born abroad = natural born citizens. Otherwise, only those born on American soil = natural born citizens.

      • Dora says:

This is getting silly by now. The term ‘Natural Born Citizen” means “A person born on the soil of two citizen parents”. Period. Case Closed! It’s right there in the 14th Amendment, but nobody wants to look it up. I have a feeling it’s because the courts allowed Obama to get away with it, that they don’t want to bring up the subject again. But it is there.

        • Myiq2xu says:

Where in the constitution or in some statute or case decision does it say that the term ‘Natural Born Citizen” is defined as “A person born on the soil of two citizen parents”?

          • Dora says:

Here is one. It’s the case of a Chinese man who was born in America, but not of citizen parents.

1898 – Wong Kim Ark uses the 14th Amendment to declare that WKA is a citizen from birth, but not a ‘natural born citizen’ as is clearly expressed in the decision by delineating between children born on the soil of a citizen and those born of an alien.

          • Somebody says:

Don’t you have to also consult with the immigration act? There was a different immigration act in place when Obama was born than when Cruz was born. The later one reflected changes in our society treating both parents equal. The one in effect when Obama was born put limits on the mother conferring citizenship, hence a lot of the conspiracy theories…..which btw hinge on him NOT being born in Hawaii.

As for Cruz it’s my understanding his mother and his mother alone can covey citizenship. Way back it took both parents, then it was the father always conveyed and the mom might convey depending on age, then it was either parent could convey no age limit. The latter is what was in place when Cruz was born in 1970.

          • Somebody says:

As an aside, the whole purpose for the natural born citizen clause is to ensure we don’t elect a president with divided loyalties. I have no question at all that Ted Cruz is loyal to the USA.

Personally I think the whole divided loyalties further makes the case for stopping the insane anchor baby process. My understanding is that the anchor baby thing is an interpretation of the 14th amendment. Congress needs to clarify.

The way things are now, Ahmadinejad, Putin, hell even Bin Laden could have sired a child that could potentially grow up to be POTUS. Said child need only have been born on our soil then he/she could be spirited off and raised to be an enemy of the US, but also raised as a charming actor.

We need to stop birthright citizenship, reign it in. No more tourist births, no more hopping across the Rio Grande to give birth. The purpose of the 14th amendment was to ensure former slaves and their children had citizenship. I think it accomplished that. Personally I have no problem with giving citizenship to babies born here to legal immigrants that are in the process of becoming citizens.

        • Venus says:

That’s not true — children of US citizens in the US military or other federal overseas jobs born abroad are natural born citizens.
I was born abroad while my father was in the US Navy, my birth certificate states “Birth Certificate of U.S. Citizen Born Abroad” and I was issued a US passport before I ever stepped on American soil.

A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing — as you have proven.

          • Myiq2xu says:

One thing we haven’t discussed is adjudication – the courts could simply pass on the whole thing by refusing to grant standing. None of the Obama birther plaintiffs was able to establish standing. I’m not even sure if Cruz could seek a declaratory judgment that he is eligible because it is hypothetical.

          • Venus says:

Oh, I doubt seriously Cruz would even seek a declaratory judgment — *but* standing isn’t quite the issue in a declaratory action that it is in actual litigation. I would think that the likelihood of Cruz gaining the nomination would be create an impetus for the need of a decision on the hypothetical.

          • 1539days says:

Chances are we already had a president who wasn’t born in the US or to an American parent.
            Hint: Not Obama

          • Venus says:

I don’t care about your riddles. But I want to note:the Constitution specifically exempts the Founding Father’s generation from the NBC requirement.

          • 1539days says:

And I don’t think English Common Law is an effective argument for Cruz not being Natural Born.

          • Venus says:

WTF? I’m not arguing that Cruz isn’t a NBC and I’m certainly not using English Common law to do it.Control yourself and go bother someone else.

    • Somebody says:

I agree with you actually, although I think this is an R year, much the way 2008 was a D year. Because of that I think it’s possible that Cruz or Rubio could defeat Hillary too.

Those are the only two I think really have a shot out of the R field, besides Trump. A month ago I would have said Cruz didn’t stand a chance, but he seems to be coming into his own even though he’s been painted as a monster for years, so maybe.

      • DandyTIger says:

I agree if Trump losses fair and square. But if the GOPe pushes him out in an unfair way, which I meant by above, then the Trump or bust crowd will not vote for the GOPe candidate.

  26. Dora says:

Here is the timeline for the 14th Amendment. It includes the Wong Kim case, which I mentioned above. BTW Mark Levin claims to be such an expert on the Constitution, so he surely knows this. I have lost all respect for that man, who I once admired.

Timeline for 14th Amendment: 1862 – John Bingham declares a Natural Born Citizen as one who is born on the soil of parents not owing allegiance to any other sovereignty

1866 – John Bingham again declares an NBC as one who is born on the soil of parents not owing allegiance to any other sovereignty

1868 – John Bingham’s baby, the 14th Amendment is adopted into the US Constitution

1872 – John Bingham, four years after the adoption of his 14th Amendment, STILL declares an NBC as one born on the soil of parents not owing allegiance to any other sovereignty

1875 – Minor v. Happersett declares a natural born citizen as one who is born on the soil to citizen parents

1898 – Wong Kim Ark uses the 14th Amendment to declare that WKA is a citizen from birth, but not a ‘natural born citizen’ as is clearly expressed in the decision by delineating between children born on the soil of a citizen and those born of an alien.

1968 – Justice Hugo Black states in Duncan v. Louisiana that John Bingham is the best authority concerning the intent of the 14th Amendment

    • Myiq2xu says:

Bingham was a congressman, and his opinion is not law. Minor v. Happerset mentions in dicta (discussion) that

“it was never doubted that all children born in a country of parents who were its citizens became themselves, upon their birth, citizens also. These were natives, or natural-born citizens, as distinguished from aliens or foreigners.”

But it does not limit the definition to that and it also states that the Constitution “does not, in words, say who shall be natural-born citizens.”

      As for the next one:

United States v. Wong Kim Ark, 169 U.S. 649 (1898), is a United States Supreme Court case in which the Court ruled that a child born in the United States of Chinese citizens, who had at the time a permanent domicile and residence in the United States and who were carrying on business there other than for the Chinese government, automatically became a U.S. citizen.[1] This decision established an important precedent in its interpretation of the Citizenship Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution.
Wong Kim Ark, who was born in San Francisco around 1871, to Chinese parents legally domiciled and resident there at the time, had been denied re-entry to the United States after a trip abroad, under a law restricting Chinese immigration and prohibiting immigrants from China from becoming naturalized U.S. citizens. He challenged the government’s refusal to recognize his citizenship, and the Supreme Court ruled in his favor, holding that the citizenship language in the Fourteenth Amendment encompassed the specific circumstances of his birth, which included that he was the child of foreigners permanently domiciled and resident in the U.S. at the time of birth.

No where in that decision does it define NBC or state whether Ark was eligible to be POTUS.

As for the last one, Duncan v. Louisiana has to do with the 6th amendment right to jury trials and the application of the due process clause of the 14th amendment.

      • Myiq2xu says:

When all this Birther stuff started up 7-8 years ago I spent quite a bit of time researching their arguments, including both the “Obama was born in Kenya” and the “Obama was born in Hawaii but he’s still not an NBC” versions. I was more than open to believing anything bad about Obama.

Neither argument has any factual or legal support.

Once upon a time, I banned birthers from TC

        • swanspirit says:

The problem with Obama was never where he was born, because he was born to an American citizen. The problem with obama, is what he is; and that is a schmuck.

Denise I think perhaps Obama took advantage of his Indonesian passport to get some foreign student aid and that is why his records were sealed. I have no proof it is pure conjecture on my part.

          • Myiq2xu says:

There are some people who are convinced he was really born in Kenya and there is some huge conspiracy to hide the truth.

I forget which bloggy I was whining on at the time, but most of us were following both the obama file and sundance at the same time. We alerted Beckwith. Good guy, he could have sued the new, TLR, blog for plagarism, but he sent a gentle warning to sundance, either give me attribution or I’ll sue your ass off. Problem solved. 😉

      • Dora says:

Oh no! I don’t want to be banned. I thought that since it’s part of the 14th Amendment and accepted by Justice Black, that it was the law. I do hope this issue will one day go to the Supremes for a definite answer.

        • 1539days says:

The problem with law is that it’s made up of other laws that define what the law is now. So, there are court cases that say the opposite of reality now because some other law (or amendment) nullified it. Anytime I see a case cited without even a Wikipedia link (some of us don’t have Westlaw) I try to look it up. Like myiq, I looked up this stuff years ago. I found out I technically qualify for German citizenship. That country actually didn’t confer citizenship from mother to child (only father to child) until the 70’s,

You aren’t a legal scholar and seem to barely understand the text of opinions. Stop making a fool of yourself.

Or don’t — mocking you is fun too.

OT…..well most of the comments are anyway, LOL!

I deserve wife of the week award!! First thing this morning I put a small boston butt on slow cooking for bbq tonight. For lunch I made a huge pot of shrimp chowder which was delicious. Right now I have an apple macadamia nut cake in the oven which I will top with a salted caramel sauce.

      Please invite us all over.

AFAIAC anytime you tell me about food you are inviting me over.

If you lived close by I would. I have so much doggone chowder it’s ridiculous. I don’t know why I can’t make a reasonable pot of soup, but I can’t. I missed my calling in life, I should have been a cook in a soup kitchen or the soup nazi!

    • cynic says:

Oh my, how many people do you cook for? A few years back, there were five adults under my roof, and then, poof, three moved out the same month, and I’m still having trouble cooking for two. Everything sounds yummy.

I cook for 7. Hubby, myself, teen daughter, grown son and his 3 kids.

Do you have any favorite cooking blogs?

        • Jadzia says:

OMG this sounds amazing. Seconding the request for cooking blogs; I am tired of all of my recipes and as my kids get bigger, recipes that serve 4 aren’t cutting it anymore.

BTW tonight is the college football national championship game!!! ROLLLLLLL TIDE!!!!

I am going to have a cup of coffee with my cake so hopefully I can stay awake for the entire game. It sucks that it’s such a late game and I have to get up tomorrow morning at 4:45am.

They’re going for the fashion statement garbage bag. Not just industrial green or black and lacey inserts in the eye slits. Features special hi-tech detection systems to avoid walking into walls or off curbs, steps or cliffs. What every modern woman desires with all her lustful heart!

They are currently available in the Dolce and Gabbana boutiques in the ME, London, Paris, Munich. I doubt those fleeing Syria, Afghanistan and other locations can afford these designs.

I look at it as a way to ease those reluctant Europeans into those hijabs, you know, since things don’t seem to be going too well for them in their home countries.

          true dat.

I just wish that I could find quality, fashionable clothes that are neither the size of a handkerchief nor a Dolce & Gabbana burka. The struggle is real!

There is an old-lady store right by my house–incredibly fashionable old-lady (and reasonably priced) but still, I should not be shopping there for at least another 25 years. If my husband says to me one more time oh, just check it out! I’m going to deck him.

I’m an 80’s kid. This is my favorite Bowie song.

Stop me before I comment on fashion again. Apparently I am RACIST, a hater of intersex AND Asian women, and a hater of the poor, oppressed tall and skinny women of the world because I commented that Louis Vuitton’s choice to feature Jaden Smith, a 17-year-old gender-conforming non-Asian boy as the face of its WOMEN’S collection indicated to me that women perhaps are no longer LV’s target market. I am such a bigot.
