It will be hitting Long Island on Saturday. I guess I’ll be trapped in for a while. You too Denise. Be prepared.
‘Storm of a lifetime’: Fierce blizzard unlike any seen for 20 YEARS is hurtling towards East Coast to blanket entire region with as much as two feet of snow

    • 49erDweet says:

      You’re welcome, btw.

    • elliesmom says:

The predictions where we are in RI are an inch or two or a foot or two depending on which forecast you look at. It gives me great confidence in the ability of meteorologists to predict what the climate will be like in 40 years. Since the storm is tracking further east than originally predicted, I’m going with closer to the inch or two. I might be wrong, but at least I won’t be spending my time the next few days worrying about it.

      • DeniseVB says:

I know, watching forecasters predict anything is priceless. Judging by what the weather was 100 years ago, I’m convinced it’s cyclic. I remember when we were doomed to the Ice Age back in the 70’s. Since then, man has overbuilt near the shores and waterways, cleared forests and generally allowed to ratf**k the environment for profit. No wonder severe weather creates more casualties. Even tornadoes used to only hit trailer parks, now they’re taking out gated communities.

        • Myiq2xu says:

We could build tornado resistant homes by changing the design and the building materials we use in places that are prone to tornadoes. But pretty much anything you build along a coast gonna get washed away sooner or later. Anything you build on the side of a hill will end up in the valley eventually. Building wood houses in fire country is just asking God to have a BBQ.

      • blowme0bama says:

Heh… that’s my (perhaps disingenuous) response to climate warmmongers: “they can’t tell you tomorrow’s temperature within 5 degrees; how the hell they going to tell you it will be 1.5 degree warmer in 50 years? – THINK!”.

    • DeniseVB says:

I think the UK is using the Euro models. Just enough to clear bread off the shelves and emptying the liquor stores in the DC area.

    I ❤ Ace:

The writer of the above-linked piece uses the quote to explain Trumpism, which I guess is a sort of nationalism plus temperamental conservatism without much actual conservative thought or specific policies attached to it. That is, it's conservative-sounding impulses (occasionally) that frequently conflict with the actual settled conservative policy consensus.

I don't think Trump knows enough about conservatism to even know there is a consensus among the thought leaders on a whole range of topics.

This makes him simultaneously infuriating, embarrassing, and exhilarating. It's embarrassing he didn't even bother to pick up three or four easy-reader books that would have sketched the main parameters of conservative thought, and it's infuriating he repudiates it all so breezily.

But, for anyone who think the conservative thought class has itself gotten too hidebound and dogmatic, it's exhilarating to see it all shaken up and so many things considered Beyond Question suddenly subject to question.

By the way, I don't say that the things Beyond Question should be discarded. Most of them are probably considered Beyond Question for a good reason. *

I just don't know if the greater mass of the party has ever really engaged in thinking about these things. Maybe people need a new round of debate and explaining — even if this seems like repetitive work to those who've already thought all this through.

On the greater point, I think the piece is right. "Conservatives" aren't all actually conservative. I'm considered a sort of "hard rightwing conservative firebrand" or something, but in fact I'm really a pissed off liberal who's angry that self-claimed "liberals" claim a string of propositions, most of which I agree with, and then proceeds to violate all of these claims without any compunctions at all, in order to gain political power and pay off political constituents.

So I'm not sure that there's really a "conservative line of thought" that really animates the right.

I've also thought, for a long time, that the left is pretty coherent in goals, if not in philosophy. They do not have consistent philosophical reasons for their demands, but all of their demands are perfectly consistent in this sense: All of their demands boil down to using government power to take money or freedom from those outside the coalition in order to redistribute those goods to those within the coalition.

It's like a gang of thieves: They all might have different philosophical justifications for their thievery, but they all agree that at the end of the day you're getting fucking robbed.

What we call the "conservative movement" is simply a reaction to that. I don't want to use the word "reactionary" because it's considered a bad word but I think it's reactionary in the sense that the left attacks and steals, and then all the people they're running roughshod over have to band together defensively to oppose them.

And I don't know our movement has any actual agreed-to philosophy behind it except that we all agree we would like to stop being attacked and robbed by the left.

It could be that a dumb bunny, unschooled in actual conservative thought, might actually be an unexpectedly strong candidate precisely because the only "conservatism" he knows is the actual glue that holds the "movement" (if it is that) together: a simple opposition to being robbed and attacked by the left.

I’m really tired of the special snowflakes blaming their lot in life on the boomers because we had it so much easier and are unwilling to share. When Ellesdad and I were married in 1973, we were 22 years old. A year later we were expecting our first child. Young men were just being freed from being drafted into a war most of us didn’t support. There was no “all-volunteer army”. Folks with PhDs were driving taxicabs because there were no jobs. Mortgage interest rates were in the teens. We waited in gaslines on odd or even days to get a half tank of gas. Of course we have all of the money now. When we were 22, our parents had all of the money, too. Elliesdad spent his first summer with a brand new engineering degree welding rings in sweat shop. They get to start where we started. Today the sweatshop would at least be air-conditioned.

I am going to NH to campaign. I most likely will reduce the days. I just don’t think I could sit on phones from 9 to 7 for 7 days. Housing is a summer camp not a hotel. Sounds like fun and I lived in hostels when I was younger. Even if airfare is more if I fly on Saturday. I think it will be exciting. I fully support Trump but my reason for going is because it’s a unique experience. I will have to fly to Boston and then take a bus to Manchester. Buses are so cheap and I think I could handle the long ride, but it involves different services. Round trip to NYC is 31 then 30(rt) to Boston then 18 (rt) to Manchester. Timing transfers in February not worth it. Flying direct to Manchester easily 200 more. Pitt to Boston and then 18 round trip bus.

    • elliesmom says:

Manchester is only about an hour from Boston if the trip is non-stop.

      • mothy67, says:

It’s a commuter bus so I think it takes a little longer. Same amount of time as flying to Philly and transfering. I just want to keep it to a carry on. I can stop in CVS and pick up hygiene stuff. 4 nights I need three(tops) changes. Sweats to sleep in as it’s a cabin.
On primary day in 2008 I went to homes of registered Hillary supporters to provide transportation to elderly voters. I don’t drive so I went to the doors. A great experience. We called first. Some very old women were waiting for the first viable candidate. HRC won PA. I liked being a part of it. I like being a part of seeing the middle class strike back. Not a Bernie fan but it is refreshing to see them all lose their shit.
My fav is when I am called ill informed or racist. This Rick Wilson clown saying Trump supporters do not matter to humanity. America is the most generous nation on the planet. Conservitives are the big givers. I read the ACA. I could see the tremendous flaws. I am angry and I like Trump. I see no one else addressing the border. I quit watching FOX because it became attack Trump non-stop. Dana Perino was the dumbest person ever on Celebrity Jeopardy. She would half scream half cry everytime Trump came up.
I think America needs to shut down immigration legal and illegal for a pause.
I read the 9/11 Commission Report. It states the biggest threat is our unsecured borders. Response under bush and 0 decreased security. I am stupid.

The Illinois state legislature is completely corrupt. My brother’s best friend was a judge who had the highest ratings of any of the judges. He was “dumped” because he wouldn’t contribute to Michael Madigan’s campaign and when he ran as an independent, Madigan’s people plastered the news waves with lies about his morality and accused him of heinous behavior. We’ve known this man for 60 years. None of what they (MSM) printed or reported was true.
Madigan and his cronies are in it for power and money. And they are “showing” up the new governor at every turn. They are despicable. And the machine continues to mow down any opposition to Madigan et. al.
Blocking is just another way to flex their muscles. They are true assholes.

    • Underwhelmed says:

And if they think Trump won’t talk about this, they’re mad. And then what? What do they think average sane people are going to think about that? How do they think they’ll vote? For the party doing this shite, or the guy saying hell no, no more, shut the door?

Face it Hillary won in 2008. The DNC used race to hide the facts. I did not know until that fateful year that the Democratic Party in PA gives extra weight to Philly. Threats of riots if super delegates what bullshit. So many stories from cauuses of manipulation, intimidation. I’d be over joyed if she lost and thenbreleased the Cracken on o.

      • taw46 says:

I will never forget what the Dems did. Remember those two documentaries that were made, but never shown? Texas, with a primary and a caucus? Around 2000 complaints in Texas that the Dems never addressed? The other states with caucuses, that locked out Hillary supporters? Big mistake to go with Obama administration. She blew us off.

        • mothy67, says:

There were tens of thousands if not more trying to have our voices heard. We were shut down . Zero media coverage. Why I like Trump he is not reliant upon the whims of media bias. Every other fucking day the media tripped over themselves to announce his attendance. Never mentioned Dave Matthews and other bands opened for him. He behaved like a rock star visting Germany. Press not even fox saidvthere was free beer and the entire event was created.
For fucks sake the media is always telling a globalist putrid agenda. Germany is the greatest country to live in? WTF how many rapes have to happen? I just see insanity. Trump I see as someone that will put America first. They way I see it Merkel sacrificed young girls for her role on the big stage. Some young girl had a degenerate man enter her with no or little response. I see Hillary as an offensive word “the” offensive word. She will stand by and let a young girl be raped also young boys to fulfill a global agenda. I think they are playing God. What of a few thousand deaths per year by illigals or a few terrorists taking hundred’s of lives. They think mandating diversity works. I hate them all and like Trump because I believe my governments first job is to protect her citizens not playing an Ivy League experiment with the world. Think about it there are governments all over Europe treating massive rape as a glitch. Disgusting.

Jada Pinkerr Smith has never been a film draw. She was on Different World and did Matrix and Medagascar. Different World was after Cossby. She behaves like she matters. I like going to the mov i es to have fun. 12 Years a Slave might be important but I hate being preached to. I am the same way with gay films. The movie was so important. Shut up you whacked hollywierd liberals. Homophobes did not sit in a theater to watch gay cowboys. The delusional aspect of these people confounds me. Madonna looks like WHat ever happened to baby Jane. She is not looking normal. I get called sexist because she has freaky plastic surgury. Trust a liberal I have been told she looks fantastic but if she did not my male privledge created her.

And yesterday, Salon called Catholicism a dangerous “cult” to be wary of and that Rubio was a cult follower. Salon is out to get Hillary elected by trashing and devaluing everyone and everything they embrace – regardless of merit.
