Rubio takes early lead in Puerto Rico primary

Sen. Marco Rubio took an overwhelming early lead in Puerto Rico’s Republican presidential primary election on Sunday, with 20 delegates to the national convention at stake.

Early returns showed Rubio with 2,463 votes, followed by Trump with 421 votes and Ted Cruz with 276 votes. Party officials estimate more than 30,000 people voted Sunday in an island struggling through a dire economic crisis.

In addition officials say the votes that some 6,000 inmates cast on Friday won’t be available until Wednesday.

The U.S. territory’s three other super-delegates already have committed to Rubio.

If a candidate gets more than half the votes, he gets all the delegates. If no one gets half, the delegates are divided proportionally.

Go Marco! And take Kasich with you!

    Inmates can vote in PR?
No wonder they’re so fucked up.

MN and PR — yep, game over.

  2. 1539days says:

Man, what did Marco promise them in Spanish?

  3. DandyTIger says:

And people were discounting the Romney effect.

  4. 1539days says:

In fixed nomination news, Hillary Clinton has as many Superdelegates as Bernie Sanders has actual delegates.

  5. DeniseVB says:

Roosevelt Roads ? PR went bankrupt when we pulled out a base a few years ago. Hope we don’t bail them out. They’re idiots. Sigh.

    • taw46 says:

I remember all of that. Didn’t work out so well for them, did it? And the Wikipedia article lists all those activists from 1999 who helped start it: Jesse Jackson, Robert Kennedy Jr., Al Sharpton, U.S. Representative Luis Gutiérrez D-IL, Rigoberta Menchú and Edward James Olmos.

  9. taw46 says:

Chris Matthews has a wonderful show tonight in remembrance of Nancy Reagan. He has brought on people who were part of Reagan administration, as well as others. He told stories about the Nancy he knew, as he had many lunches and dinners with her. I must say, at times like this Chris really comes through, he respects the history.

If there’s any indication that Rubio will let anyone in the US, his 74% showing in Puerto Rico is it.

        Not in Trump’s America.

Actually, I’m thinking of potential statehood as an issue.

        • lizzy says:

They haven’t seemed that interested in statehood.

          • elliesmom says:

There are a lot of benefits to not being a state. One of the biggest is Puerto Ricans do not pay federal personal income taxes. They do pay commonwealth taxes, which are in some cases higher than what they would pay in federal taxes, but there’s no guarantee they’d go away completely if they became a state. Like a lot of people on the mainland might be interested in a VAT tax here, but only the true believer would vote for a VAT to replace the personal income tax unless the income tax was repealed first.

  12. Venus says:

Ted Cruz has Beck the lunatic and tomorrow will be campaigning in MS with Brian Fischer — the guy who Brian advocates arresting gays and lesbians and enacting the same laws in the US as Russia banning homosexuality.

Cruz is a scumbag and anyone who supports him is an asshole.

    • mothy67, says:

He’ll be destroyed by HRC in general.

    • mothy67, says:

That info needs to be spread far and wide.

    • Somebody says:

OMG, first I’m shocked someone would advocate arresting gays unless they’re muslim. Second, I can’t believe Cruz or any candidate would willingly take them out on the campaign trail with them. Is the media going to have a fit and demand Ted disavow? Look how they acted over David Duke’s supposed endorsement of Trump.

    • Dora says:

Here is another one of his pastor friends. This guy is really nuts!!!

Ted Cruz attended the National Religious Liberties Conference in Iowa in November. Infamous “Kill-the-gays” pastor Kevin Swanson introduced Cruz to the stage.

    • swanspirit says:

I hope, and wish Trump would pick up on this , and use it against him., because HRC or Sandbox will.

      • dm says:

One of the things I like about Ted is his belief that social issues like gay marriage should be decided by the states, not the feds. However, his association with the lunatic fringe will win him some support but not enough. Since he hasn’t really garnered the evangelical vote, maybe the strategy now is to go after the fringe segment of society. As I have said before, I like his resume and stance on many issues (not all), I abhor what his campaign has become.

    • piper says:

      Angie, (Venus)
Your comment about us Non-Trump supporters was beneath you and I question your need to denigrate us. Name calling was yuuuuuge during the Obama presidential run and presidency and SADLY, I’m seeing the same kind of behavior from the Trump supporters. Will you also follow the obamabots’ use of rationalization and justification when Trump shows his true colors and failure in keeping promises. On the campaign trail sound bites sound wonderful but are just words without actions.

The world is on fire and there is no one person willing and able to put out the flames.

      • Venus says:

Re-read, piper — I didn’t say anything about non-Trump; I said Cruz supporters. And I stand by that — he campaign with Beck and Fischer. Birds of a feather.

        • Myiq2xu says:

I gotta side with Piper on this one. Say whatever you want about Cruz, Beck and Fischer. But Cruz supporters are welcome here.

          • Venus says:

            Piper said non-Trump supporters.

          • Venus says:

Furthermore, I never said that anyone isn’t welcome on YOUR blog. If piper doesn’t like the fact that I’m pointing out that Cruz associates with the likes of Beck and Fisher, and takes it *personally* — that’s really her problem.

      • Venus says:

Non-Trump = Cruz supporters to you? I didn’t say that. I’m pointing out who Cruz associates himself with. How that personally affect you is not really my concern.

  13. 1539days says:

Here’s something to think about – was the fix in for Obama in 2012. Given Mitt Romney’s early strong performance and later weak behavior suggests that the big boys told him to take a dive and allow Obama a second term.

    • SHV says:

Fits the pattern of behavior of the Uni-Party over the past 20 years. The interaction of Congress/President has been a long running street theater production of “Screw the American People”. NAFTA, repeal of Glass-Steagall, Part D Medicare, FISA, Patriot Act, Obamacare, Obama’s Ex orders, etc., etc., etc.

      • lyn says:

Word. Romney is a member of the global traitor class, and his ego cannot bear to see Trump doing well. I despise the Republicans more than the Democrats now.
