The Era Of White Guilt Is Over

José Calderón

José Calderón

This is why I should never read editorials while sitting on the toilet:

AT A RECENT Celtics game, some hometown fans witnessed an impromptu preview of Trump Nation. It started when Knicks point guard José Calderón — who is from Spain — committed a foul, and the Celtics crowd reacted accordingly with some boos and heckles. Elvis Jocol Lara, a writer for El Mundo, the local Spanish-language newspaper, was sitting in the media section when he heard two fans nearby shout in reaction to Calderón’s name over the PA system: “Trump, Trump, Trump!” and “Build a wall, build a wall!”

In the age of Donald Trump, such sentiments are implicitly permitted to rise from bigots’ murky mental underbrush out into the open. What happened afterwards demonstrated an important lesson for immigrants: Complacency is no longer an option — not only for immigrants, but for all Americans who care about fundamental values.

Lara confronted the two fans and told them to be quiet. The two fans shouted back: “Go back to Mexico,” and “Make me some tacos.” Trump has given legitimacy to such ugly rhetoric. A recent analysis of data on Trump supporters found that most of them live in areas that rank high in Google searches for racial slurs and jokes. No, that doesn’t prove a direct correlation, but few can deny that some of Trump’s strongest support is driven by racial and ethnic hostility.

That racial hostility increasingly is out in the open now, laid bare. And that’s a Trump outcome that I welcome. It’s better to face that resentment and antagonism head on. You can’t target it, and hope to eradicate it, while it’s hidden. Trump has forced immigrant communities to confront their long-standing political meekness. How many times have we heard about the impending awakening of the mythical, jaded sleeping giant of US Latino voters? And yet we’ve never really arrived at the polls in staggering numbers. But now there’s some evidence the giant is waking up.

Back to Lara at the Garden: A few fans who were sitting nearby, mostly non-Hispanic whites, also stood up to call out the two Trump supporters for their disparaging comments. One was Nicholas Boretti, a 28-year-old South End resident. “I was just appalled,” Boretti said. When the situation escalated, and the Trump supporters continued to hurl insults at Lara and anyone who would confront them, he intervened. “I’m typically a pretty passive person, but I could see in Elvis’s face how hurt he was, what those words meant to him. That really bothered me, that was the catalyst for me. I stood up and asked them to stop it, I told them there were families and kids around.”

Lara took out his phone and snapped a picture of the hecklers. But the two young men continued with the racially charged comments and cursed at the other fans. Lara then flagged down a couple of security officers, who swiftly confronted one of fans. He was escorted away and his friend soon followed. Both were presumably ejected from the Garden.

When Lara got home he posted the image of the two “Trumpers” on Facebook, with a brief description of the incident. (The post has more than 7,000 likes and has been shared more than 4,000 times.) Lara and Boretti say people were congratulating them after the two fans got ejected. There was far more denouncing of the fans’ behavior than Lara expected.

I don’t know who those two young men were, but they were jerks. If they were Boston Celtic fans that’s not surprising. But NBA basketball is not exactly the favorite sport of racists. It is almost 75% black. If you were a white supremacist you wouldn’t want to basketball as proof of the superiority of the white race.

As you can see from the picture above, Jose Calderone is white. I mean really white. He’s so white he makes Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio look like farm laborers from Oaxaca. And he spent the first seven years of his career playing in Canada.

The author (Marcela Garcia) claims that Donald Trump has made bigotry socially acceptable again. But the story doesn’t back that up. The two jerkwads were called out by other whites and then ejected from the game by security. They were but two assholes in a crowd of over 18,000 people.

So what is the point of the article? Am I supposed to be ashamed of these two dickheads? Am I supposed to shun Donald Trump because they allegedly invoked his name? Are the very real concerns of millions of Trump supporters invalidated by two drunken louts?

I don’t think so. The Era of White Guilt is over. I want to live in a colorblind post-racial society, where people are not divided by the color of their skin. I am opposed to racism in all its forms.

The most insidious form of racism is a thing called “identity politics”.

They are trying to do to Trump and his supporters what they did to the Tea Party – scour every event to find one or two idiots and then make it seem as if those idiots are representative of the entire group.

In many cases the idiots are fakes.

is that how the Black Panthers escaped sentencing for their obvious intimidation and other behaviors in PA in 2008?

Been busy installing our brand new ooma telo phone thingy. It works. Will take around 3 weeks before it transfers our phone number over from the cable company. Then we can finally cut the cord.

It didn’t take long for Twitchy to round up HateTwitter for Todd Palin’s accident. PDS is still alive and living rent free in their heads……

    • elliesmom says:

There are posts on twitter at #feelthebern calling for Trump to be assassinated and his wife and daughter to be raped to death. I’m waiting for that new committee of theirs to ban the posters, but they’re still there spewing hate. Maybe Bernie could step in? Oh wait, it’s not his fault. It’s all Trump’s fault. He deserves it and his wife and daughter are asking to be raped. It must be what they’re wearing.

Trump breaks the 50% mark in national support. Um, ceiling, what ceiling.

    • votermom says:

But but but his negatives are sky high!
He’ll never win! And even if he does win he’ll just hand it to his buddy Hillary!

    • Somebody says:

That’s not possible Dandy, it must be a flawed poll. Only Little Marco can beat Hillary you shut up, Trump has a 35% ceiling tops……2/3rds of republicans will NEVER, EVER, vote for him…….just stop it, the poll is fake, Trump is a racist and so are you. Trump incites violence…..Trump is tearing the republican party apart…..John Kasich is a nice moderate, don’t you like John?? John can beat Hillary too, for reals.

***Just in case anybody has any doubt I was being sarcastic***

I can just hear Bill Kristol: “Half of the entire electorate is against him!!!”

      • Somebody says:

One of the pundits already stated the only reason Trump is winning is because he’s getting more votes.

        • Anthony says:

I saw that on Halperin’s show “The Circus” on Showtime. Plastered it all over Facebook.

I think the original comment was “Republicans are disciplined! They pay their dues and wait their turn! All Donald Trump has is a lot of votes!”

Halperin offered him another martini, with a sly smile lol

      • DeniseVB says:

Is that enough for Kristol to start a 3rd party? 😉

There are plenty of sane non-Trump-supporters. I appreciate John because he’s one of them, and won’t truck with all the hysteria.

    • leslie says:

possible, but there were arrests made. . . just not many.

    • DeniseVB says:

Don’t they make their “protesters” take a civil disobedience class? It’s really pretty simple. You have your free speech zone or marching route. Usually many police around, to protect you and prevent you from “crossing the line” (which is what they’re doing entering the Trump rallies). Once you cross the line, you will be arrested. End of your fun time protest experience. Though worse that will happen is that you sit in a hot paddy wagon or a holding area for hours, then they let you go. Unless your are a serious jerk like hit a cop or loot a store….oh wait….

This has not been enforced since Obama took office. Oh just let them blow off steam, that’s what you see now.

    • DeniseVB says:

Does any one of our betters understand what the meaning of “illegal” is ? Oh wait, that would be that racist, bigot and violent Trump 😉

  12. WMCB says:

No normal, sane person watching this video would characterize it as “OMG ASSAULTING A REPORTER!” Sorry, but the Trump-hate-deranged are fucking nuts.

The way the media is lying (ex: saying it was Trump supporters who were violent in Chicago when it was the Bernie/MoveOn people) I honestly don’t believe those 2 guys said any such thing.
It’s this reporters wet dream talking to create a narrative.
Just like the false reports of Tea Party people yelling racial epitaphs.

Here’s my take on the Breitbart wars:

    1) Do I think the site has gone downhill, become more sensationalist and click-baity since Andrew’s death? Yep.

    2) Do I think everyone over there is evil and hating Andrew’s memory? Nope – I just think there was only one Andrew (Just like there was only one Steve Jobs)

    3) All the digging up of Andrew’s corpse, declaring how well you knew his mind, propping him up like Weekend at Bernies, and opining on what he would and would not approve of today (which naturally matches your opinions EXACTLY) disgusts me.

    • Somebody says:

Totally agree, boy can you imagine how much fun Andrew would be having during this election??

  19. Somebody says:

Do any of you that tweet, tweet to the Trump campaign?

I just saw Carl Cameron on Shepherd Smith’s show, flashing around an arm band. This is supposedly an official Trump arm band. I somehow seriously doubt it, and if it was then why did the supposed Trump supporter give it to campaign Carl???

This smells like a set up, a desperate set up to further paint Trump as a Nazi. The campaign needs to get out ahead of this and fast. If in fact these are official Trump products, then all I have to say is WTF is wrong with them?? Bad, bad symbolism.

  20. lyn says:

Will Hillary have to disavow and disavow and disavow this?

We want Hillary Clinton to win,” Mr Quigg told The Telegraph. “She is telling everybody one thing, but she has a hidden agenda. She’s telling everybody what they want to hear so she can get elected, because she’s Bill Clinton’s wife, she’s close to the Bushes. [But] once she’s in the presidency, she’s going to come out and her true colours are going to show.

  21. Lulu says:

Kat-sick is campaigning with Mittens in Ohio. He looks like he chopping some pineapples for a fruit salad. Everyone is asking reporters who they should vote for to stop Trump! Some people in Ohio don’t want to vote for a loser and don’t want people to know they might vote for Trump. Everyone is very confused in Ohio (and can’t find their parked cars). This is what I just learned on a Cavuto interview. Oy!

    I’m outta here!

I’m so embarrassed! CA’s “high speed rail” authority is continuing plans to build the unneeded railroad in bits and pieces. Currently building between Fresno and the north edge of Madera. About 25 miles. Takes 26 minutes to drive. The bullet train might do it in 18. But you have to park your car, first. And get a ride, after. So how much time is being saved? For how many daily passengers? But…….it’s “progress”.
Won’t extend into Klown kountry for another ten years.

    • Myiq2xu says:

Once you arrive in Madera you have to ride a bus or rent a car.

      • 49erDweet says:

        Rotsa ruck on that!

      • 49erDweet says:

There’s probably 37 people in Madera who’ll commute by rail to Fresburg each day, and 12 who’ll commute the other way. Tops!

        • Myiq2xu says:

You could park a second car at the station in Madera to drive around town. But you better make sure it’s a beater with nothing worth stealing inside. Leave it unlocked, with no gas and bald tires and maybe they won’t steal it. Some homeless person will be camping in it occasionally.

    • helenk3 says:

as much as I like passenger railroading, this is the most stupid idea since the bridge to nowhere,

the state would be better served with a commuter service from Sacramento to San Jose along the same route that amtrack trains 11 and 14 use. already have the track and there is no service there now. There is already service between San Jose and San Francisco.

      • helenk3 says:

I so not understand why you can go from San Diego to Seattle along the coast but the commuter service in California has so many missing pieces between cities.
But then again I did not understand why metrolink in the LA area catered only to daylight office workers and forgot that they are so many people that work other shifts. They do not have a problem using the tax money for those people

      • Myiq2xu says:

“If you build it they will come” is bullshit. The original railroads were built to meet existing demand.

        • helenk3 says:

if you work 2nd or 3rd trick in the LA area you can not use the railroad. no trains to or from Riverside after 7PM same with some of the other lines.I am from the east coast and could use a commuter train to and from work no matter what shift i worked and I really thought that all commuter railroads were like that. Talk about culture shock.

      • 49erDweet says:

Absolutely! I love rail, too, but this is just Techie ego one-upmanship in full bloom. And speaking of “bloom,” that’s the name of the money guy behind the construction contract. Blum. He’s hubs to Senator Diane Feinstein, but that’s not important. Wink.

        • DeniseVB says:

In our area it takes as long to drive from my house to downtown Norfolk or to the Beach as it does for me to get to their planned light rail station connecting the two. So I would never use it.

          I’m a railfan too !

I voted earlier today. The place was jam-packed. It turns out any Cook County registered voter can vote early at any early voting site in the county. So along with all the local citizens, the Northwestern U students as well as people from all over the county, many were voting today.
The NU students are in the middle of finals for this quarter (or semester). They go home tomorrow or Thursday thank the goddesses. It may be sane in the downtown area for a week or so.

I was standing in line, directly in front of a couple of the NU students who used the word “like” so often, I nearly asked them if the school offered remedial conversational English. I suppose that would have been considered racist or sexist or ageist or something and they might have run out of there looking for a safe space while screaming about micro-aggression. Some of the students were wearing campaign buttons – but since they were for Democrat candidates, I suppose it was okay. /s

This was the final day of early voting and as such, the site was going to be open until 7:00 tonight. I was pretty surprised about that. I had looked on the internet and did not see that info. But that’s good for people who don’t want to go out after work tomorrow in the rainstorms we are predicted to have.
