Just when I am on the verge of losing all faith in humanity, baseball season starts. Yesterday Hunter Pence hit a grand salami in the 8th to nail down a victory over the Hated Dodgers.

This is an open thread.

Is it OK if I call ’em the Chavez Ravine Dodgers? I don’t like ’em, but grew up in LA.

  2. blowme0bama says:

Baseball is the most boring sport to watch on TV. Going TO the games is pretty cool, but for some reason it just doesn’t translate well over TV. Pro football, otoh is far better on TV than going to the game.

    • 49erDweet says:

      Yeah, but the NFL Commissioner has suddenly assumed an all-knowing moral mantle on social justice issues that’s gonna eventually spell their slide into becoming “also rans”. They’ll survive but not thrive. Football’s a game, not a throne. {{slams head on desk}}

    • Myiq2xu™ says:

Have you ever watched soccer? Fishing? Golf?

Watching baseball is a leisurely past-time. You relax and talk between pitches and plays. Or you surf the net. Those of us with ADD can DVR the games and just cut to the action.

    • mothy67 says:

I watchvon tv , but listen to the radio. TV guys are annoying.
      Hockey is the bestest.

      • leslie says:

I watch baseball on tv and listen to the radio, as well. But the announcers on the radio are now so full of themselves… I was driving one day last summer, and trying to listen to the game. The announcers talked about everything BUT the game for at least 10 minutes. I didn’t know if the game was over, postponed, called, or if they were still playing. Sooo frustrating. Hockey is great, but most of the time I can’t see the puck, so when a goal is scored, (Kinda like watching golf – I only know by the sound of the crowd.

    • blowme0bama says:

I think it has to do with the limited field of view. There’s a lot more going on than just the constant camera focus on the Pitcher. It used to be “a thing” to go to minor league games where I grew up. It’s pretty popular now here in Biloxi (Brewers farm team).

    • DeniseVB says:

I agree about football, the only seats we can usually afford are in the nosebleeds and the players are about an inch high from that view. We end up watching the jumbotron to see what’s going on on the field.

      • blowme0bama says:

Yeah, on TV, the players are much bigger than life.

College football, otoh, is equal to pro on TV, but FAR better at the game. You can’t capture that college energy on TV.

        • Myiq2xu™ says:

Watching football on TV, watching football live and playing football are three different things. Even a “friendly game” of touch football can get pretty physical. If you love the mechanics of the game and being able to see every play in detail, stay home and watch the game on TV.

Going to NFL or NCAA football games is a semi-religious experience. Nobody shows up, watches the game and leaves. It’s a major social event. Season ticket holders spend thousands of $$$ every year on tickets and tailgating. Some spend even more to travel to away games. You can have a great time and hardly see the game.

High School football is a whole ‘nuther universe, especially in Texas.

          • Myiq2xu™ says:

The SFGiants have successfully marketed watching games at AT&T Park as an “experience”. That’s why they draw crowds even when the team isn’t doing well.

Fans of the Hated Dodgers show up late and leave early, and stop going to games when the team is out of contention.

“Oh, yeah! Hunting, fishing, target shooting, archery, skeet, canoeing, downhill skiing, water skiing, swimming, diving, roller skating, surfing, sailing, cross country skiing, back packing, rock climbing . . ., how ’bout you?”
“Oh, uh, I like basketball and football.”
      City kid. 😦

      • blowme0bama says:

Heh… Pretty accurate. Love wingshooting, used to love the rock climbing, camping backpacking stuff, but just don’t have the energy for that any more.

White Sox at home opening day is today. The game is scheduled to start at 3:something. It’s been raining and snowing all day. They plan to play unless there is a flood or blizzard. Their record is 3-0. I think they should just quit now while they’re ahead.

    • blowme0bama says:

Absolutely true. After Fed, state income, local property taxes plus whatever addition “district” and utility taxes are added together, not including SALES tax, I’m pretty sure between 45 to 50 % of my income goes to pay my betters in government and for distribution to the presiding junta s friends, donors, and favored groups.

      • lyn says:

The landline telephone taxes are high too.

        • blowme0bama says:

Saw where FCC wants an 18% tax on cell bills to be implemented for “fair broadband” subsidies to “the poor”.

        • leslie says:

That’s for certain. I once called AT&T to ask about a lower phone plan. The woman in “customer service” actually laughed at me. (She was not a very good pr person) and said I had the lowest plan there is. (Not true) I told her that I knew of people who had lower phone plans and that I wanted to speak with her supervisor. I probably don’t use my landline more than 3 times/month and usually to receive local calls. They refused to lower my phone plan and said it was as high as it is due to the area taxes. I pay nearly $35/month for nothing. I keep it because cell phone reception is poor in my apartment. texting is fine and internet service is fine. But phone service/reception is not.

          • mothy67 says:

I still don’t understand how the arab spring took place. They said it was fueled by social media. So all these people making 5/week all have data plans and facebook guy just happened to be there. What a load of tosh.

          • lyn says:

We have a basic cell phone for emergencies, and that $12.50 a month. Our Centurylink landline with DSL costs $65 a month.

          • leslie says:

That’s what I used to have. My cell phone service is relatively low ($30). It’s lower than my landline. But my kids text and no matter what I’ve said, that is their preferred method of communication. So I’m pretty much forced to have my cell with me all the time . . . I hate it.

          • swanspirit says:

I use Magic Jack for my land line, $37.00 a year, works fine. Cell phone reception is poor in my house too, and I don’t want to go stand on the front porch to talk on the phone.

          • leslie says:

I’ll have to explore this Magic Jack. Thanks.

          • smile says:

Mothy, Cell phone service is very cheap outside of the USA. It is super cheap in Asia and I would imagine in Africa and S.America. Not only is it super cheap, they also get more benefits. For example, they don’t have to pay for incoming calls and they can make int’l calls and texts. So cheap that even beggars and homeless have cell phones.

          • mothy67 says:

            Many questions on that?
Why so cheap first among them.
5 dollars a week still does not leave room for a data plan and why was a facebook person on the ground.
It was a fabrication. That failed nkw we have ISIS.

      • mothy67 says:

The cell phone tax pisses me off. The free phones come from that.

        • blowme0bama says:

Yeah, and you probably saw where they want to increase that (and probably a tax on internet services as well) to 18% to provide subsidies for “poor people” to gain broadband access.

          • mothy67 says:

In PA they add 5 to liquor at the state stores then charge you tax on the bottle tax. Same with cigarettes. You pay tax on tax.

          • mothy67 says:

And yet the white guy who worked 20 years in a factory that is no more is held responsible for his bad life choices.

          • blowme0bama says:

Yeah, we’ve all had more of this shit than we can stomach. It’s about to come to an end – one way or another.

    • Jadzia says:

Absolutely! I meet so many people over here who think that America is the land of low taxes because they have a general idea of what the federal income tax is. Then I’m like, “Um, California’s got a state income tax of like 9% and then there’s sales tax and some cities have a city tax and if you work in NYC there’s the commuter tax even if you DON’T live there and that’s why I live in HIGH TAX WESTERN EUROPE and I pay less than I did in Los Angeles and would you like to hear about the self-employment tax?”

And then they back away slowly because they don’t want to poke the crazy.

Might I also add that obama wants to give social security to illegals but those who worked their entire lives got no COLA last year. My parents worked their asses off and have little retirement. My mom has a decent 401 and a small retirement, but my dad only has SS. Not because the were not responsible, but because they had 5 kids. We did okay without a tv or phone. No debt save a few grand in medical bills. African Americans are more likely to not have any resources and they get no COLA.
Earned income credit blows my mind..

    • 49erDweet says:

Mothy, did the national cost of living go up? I thought it was stagnant and am too tired to Google it.

      • leslie says:

Last evening there was a report on the news that there had been no cost of living increase for the past 2 years and so the USPS is lowering the cost of first class mail by 2 cents this year from .49 to .47 per stamp.

        • 49erDweet says:

Yeah. Not surprised. And of course that explains why no COLA. TY. My retirement has one of those clauses, too, but we’ve made it a rule to just live on 75% to give us our own hedge.

          • leslie says:

Great idea. When I retired last summer, I decided to save my SS and try to live on my small pension – Just to have some kind of cushion. Probably wise, since IL pension fund has been eaten away by legistators’ dispensing those funds for everything EXCEPT pensions.

It’s a new law respecting religious liberty, but mostly it’s about the provision requiring people to use the bathroom that corresponds to the sex on their birth certificate.

      • blowme0bama says:

Which I can’t understand why these people just HAVE to pee in the ladie’s room now rather than where they’ve been peeing all their life.

        • elliesmom says:

If they’re successfully passing as women, all they had to was to go in the stall and shut the store. This is political. Because nothing will never be enough.

          • 49erDweet says:

It’s not the peeing in the ladies room. It’s everybody LIKING that they pee there.

          • Lulu says:

Exactly. They don’t want “tolerance” but wholehearted approval. The “self obsessed” don’t understand that they are not the center of the universe and not only do people not think about them enough to “approve” of them or much of anything but really do not give a rat’s ass if they exist. This is a very difficult concept for them. Small children think this way because their brains have not developed beyond it. So much of the behavior of the extreme left is arrested development and they are stuck behaviorally. They demand to be infantilized and no one has the time, interest or thinks it is good for them. Give them a Binky. Maybe some pull-ups so they just crap their pants.

If I am at an amusement park with a 9 year old bet your ass she is going to learn to use a toilet while talking to me on the phone as I stand at the door scaring all parents away. I’ll probably be arrested for loitering.
Pediatricians are saying hormone therapy to block puberty is akin to child abuse. What will the results be longterm. A girl can be butch a boy can be fem. Why not let them at least get through puberty. Men that prey on children go to extremes. They risk everything to look at kiddie porn. Prison!!!! How is that not a threat? Dressing up in drag.
No,I am a GAY man if you have a penis or were born with a penis stay out of restrooms that are accessible to girls. Hypocritically, I feel the same way about w2m but not as adamant.

I totally agree. Doctors are saying that because it’s true! And you don’t need an M.D. to know that. The world has gone mad.
Also, I agree wit you not wanting a man in the bathroom with a little girl. The world is going mad trying to characterize people against this as being “haters” or whatever.

It is discomforting. I’ve already experienced it and was so dismayed. There, in the stall next to me was a person standing up and peeing into the toilet. PLUS did not flush and walked out without washing afterwards. There was pee on the floor and on the toilet seat, and since there were no paper towels – just a blow dryer – I had to wait to get toilet paper before I could touch the door handle to leave. I’m still creeped out by it.

That reminds me. I caused a stink a year so so ago because the local food bank was handing out all the local stuff to illegals. Said illegals would pull up in new pickup trucks, Escalades, etc and haul stuff out on flat buggies to load up. Locals who were short of funds at the end of the month or had a fire got zip. Anyway the big money dried up and the place is now empty and Catholic Charities has not much to give them, I see illegals stomping out of the building with empty hands, getting into new cars and pealing out in fury. A LOCAL charity is now administered by a Protestant church co-op who hand out grocery store gift cards after presenting ID, income proof, proof of local residence, and a police or fire department report of loss for emergencies or a medical bill. They will also pay for utilities but only directly to the utility. NO CASH handed out. Drunks, the crazed and junkies are asked to leave the premises with police assistance. The Baptists and Presbyterians do not screw around. It is a big hit because poor people get to pick out their own food instead of some leftover crap and they don’t have to compete with a mob at the food bank stripping shelves only on Monday mornings.

My kids really can’t do it, but I think I’ll be able to hire a nurse or someone to help.
