Saturday Open Thread

I just spent the past 5 hours cleaning and “un-packing” Mom’s house. My sister helped and brought 2 assistants. Mom’s trash bins are full, there is a 33 gal garbage can full of stuff to be shredded, and we hauled a truckload of stuff off to Goodwill. Her old nasty loveseat has been replaced with a nicer but used loveseat/recliner.

Now I’m gonna rest and recuperate, then go to Fresno to see Mom.

TWO protesters, and this is news? But the DNC debacle was not worth noting by the MSM after day 1?

Did you ask Mom before you got rid of her loveseat? If you put a recliner in my house without asking me if I wanted it, you’d be in a lot of trouble. Especially if I couldn’t get my loveseat back. It’s great you did some housekeeping for her. I hope you didn’t take something she really loved to Goodwill. I learned the hard way with my father-in-law.😉

That was lot of work – congrats on getting so much accomplished. Give your sister a big hug and thank those helpers. You all have done a wonderful thing for your Mom – once people get to a certain age keeping things in check become more difficult and most will not ask for help – heck they think things are fine. My mother was always a neat freak but even she, as she got into her 80s, had piles of stuff everywhere. I pared her belonging way down (we had a big old three story Victorian with full basement) to move her in with me but brought more than I should have as I wanted her to feel at home. My neighbors kindly tell me that my condo looked like a cozy B&B once I had Mom’s stuff placed. Positive thoughts being sent to CA.

    Hot Air:

So the hot new conspiracy theory floating around the interwebs this weekend, and one that Snopes was quick to jump in on in order to try and separate coincidental facts from conspiratorial conclusions, is that the Democratic Party ticket fix was in from 2008. Let me try to paint the timeline.

In 2008, when Hillary Clinton was in the process of getting kneecapped in the primaries to then-Senator Barack Obama, she had a national co-chair of her campaign – Debbie Wasserman Schultz, now exiled former chair of the Democratic National Committee. Once it became clear that Obama would indeed get the nomination, Wasserman-Schultz, along with the rest of the Democratic Party, save the birthers, who had their origins in the Hillary campaign, got on board the Obama train full-throated.

So we know the grand deal, or we at least think we know the grand deal. Obama needed reconciliation. He needed unity. The 2008 primary was brutal between the Obama and Clinton camps. So he offered her the Secretary of State position, a position she would eventually pilot like the captain of the Hindenburg. In return, Obama would support Hillary when it was her turn in 2016. But was there more to it? Did Hillary want more than just his endorsement? Was there the baseball equivalent of a player to be named later in the trade?

Hillary never stopped wanting to be president. She was just was going to have to wait for eight years. But how could she take the steps necessary and maneuver so she wouldn’t be faced with another loss in the primary in 2016? Well, the strategic thing would be to have a plant become the head of the DNC so that if a thumb on the scale had to take place, she’d at least own the thumb. That’s where Barack Obama and Debbie Wasserman-Schultz come in.

By 2011, when Hillary should have been thinking about growing security concerns in Benghazi that were coming in to her office, that were rejected every time, the DNC had a chairman who was doing just fine, having accepted the position at the request of President Obama in 2009. His name? Tim Kaine. You might have heard of him recently. He had no intention of stepping down, but the President called and changed his mind.

Virginia Senator James Webb was retiring as Senator, and Obama wanted to have Kaine run for that seat. Kaine originally declined, happy with the job he was doing, but the President can be very persuasive, and perhaps dangled a carrot down the road if he would take the assignment temporarily.

Donna Brazille was the interim chair of the DNC after Kaine stepped down, and was in line to become the permanent chair, until Barack Obama came out and recommended someone unexpected as chair – Hillary Clinton’s former campaign co-chair, Debbie Wasserman-Schultz. That move had to certainly make Hillary happy, didn’t it? But now we get back to the carrot dangled to Tim Kaine to get him to reconsider and run for a Senate seat he didn’t want, and to step down from a job he was happy to have and didn’t want to leave so soon. What could that carrot be? Could it possibly be something like taking the Senate seat for four years and then parachuting onto the national ticket as Hillary’s Veep? That’s the conspiracy theory.

Snopes notes that the timeline is basically correct, that all these events did take place. As for proving the backroom deal between Obama and Hillary, with the players in the trade being Kaine and Wasserman-Schultz, Snopes can’t prove or disprove it. But that’s the fun about the innertubes. Speculation can run rampant, especially on a weekend after a political convention that was manipulated to make sure that the Bernie Sanders people got screwed over every which way possible.

When you look back at this chain of events, post-DNC hacking scandal, it sure is a lot easier to understand why there was a thumb, a fist, hell, a side of beef, on the scale against Bernie Sanders and his supports in the 2016 primary cycle.

Bernie voters, you sad saps, you never had a chance. Now, we can reasonably suspect that the chance you didn’t have goes back eight years. We can also deduce that the Democratic Party is a top-down organization, not a grassroots organization. They claim to be, of course, but the power at the top has nothing to do with the will of the people in its base. It’s a club where only the opinions of a couple of members count.

I was surprised that DWS wasn’t fired after the 2014 election. Now I know why.

    • dm says:

There was definitely a deal in place between HRC and BO 2008…included campaign debt relief, a top spot in his administration, and his endorsement. These other “things” were just grease for the wheel…it’s all a conspiracy theory, so to speak. If any of the bernouts are still doubtful, then obviously they didn’t take a look at history – 2008. They would have been prepared had they bothered to research it.

      • DeniseVB says:

Why not Hillary on top of the ticket in 2008? Obama as VP? Double historic too. He’s still in his 50’s and would have been prime to run for President now. I probably still would have voted McCain/Palin because I absolutely adored Sarah.

        • Mt.Laurel says:

Because they realized they could push him in earlier than expected and he could do more damage faster using the race card to bash over peoples heads.

      • Constance says:

The Bernie Bros are the voters who just came of age this last 5 years and oldsters who want to be thought of as forever young. They have no idea what went on in 2008 they were 10 to 16 years old. They are very idealistic and they have been given good reason not to like Hillary. The Obots of 2008 are a different group and they are the ones who trashed Hillary in 2008 not the Republicans. I don’t see the Obots ever voting for Hillary either. Of course given Hillary’s job performance she totally trashed her own reputation. I really think if the Green Party and the Libertarians could come to some sort of agreement they could get more votes than Hillary. The Dems were stupid, they should have put Hillary up in 2008 with Obama as the VP then run Obama in 2016. Media like to talk about how divided the Republicans are I don’t see how they ever put the Dem party back together and if they do I don’t see the blue collar people ever fitting in with all the little pampered progressive twits.

          • DeniseVB says:

I peeked at wiki, appears to be natural causes, but I did see Marcia Fudge won her seat.

On August 19, 2008, while driving her car, Congresswoman Tubbs Jones suffered a cerebral hemorrhage due to a burst aneurysm in her brain. Police had noticed erratic driving and identified the unconscious Tubbs Jones after her vehicle left the roadway and came to a stop in a field.[10][11][12] She was taken to the intensive care unit of Huron Hospital, a satellite of the Cleveland Clinic, where she was put on life support. Due to hemorrhaging, she remained in unstable and critical condition.[13][14][15]

Tubbs Jones died August 20 at 6:12 p.m. EDT of complications from the brain hemorrhage.[2][3] A special election was ordered by Ohio Governor Ted Strickland for November 18, 2008, to elect a successor to serve out the remainder of her term.[16][17] Warrensville Heights Mayor Marcia Fudge, the Democratic nominee, won the election.[18]

    Interesting article —

[snip] The failure of the DNC is symptomatic of the intrinsic flaw of the Hillary campaign. She must defend the status quo. This has meant a status quo DNC. A candidate from eight years ago wheeled out the same tired rhetoric of eight years ago to win over an electorate that created Donald Trump to reject the legacy of the last eight years. Half of her own party voted to reject the last eight years with the breakout success of insurgent Bernie Sanders. If she could barely put down a revolt in her own party led by a 70-year-old Jewish socialist from Vermont even with hundreds of millions of dollars, name recognition, the support of a sitting President, and a party system actually rigged to nominate her, how does anybody expect her to stop the most remarkable political phenomenon in American history?

All the President’s men cannot resurrect the political zombie which should have been laid to rest in 2008. This election year will be the year of judgment. The media has controlled the discussion for decades and the Democratic political machine has gone unchallenged by an impotent Republican establishment. After six years of betrayal, the American people have found their voice in Donald Trump, the instrument of righteous popular retribution against a downright evil political class. And this year, at long last, Hillary Clinton’s time has come; and she is beyond salvation.

    • Venus says:

The key sentence ^^ above is:

It feels like Trump has all of the momentum. Everything in the news is about Trump; though they hate him, even the liberal elites can’t stop talking about him.
This election really isn’t about Hillary potentially being the first female president, or about Hillary potentially winning at all. This is about whether Donald Trump will win or lose. He is the protagonist of this narrative. Hillary is the antagonist. Some (insane) people will always want the antagonist to win. But it always just feels like the protagonist will win, because that’s almost always what protagonists do.

Scott Adams said a few weeks back — “A referendum on Trump means Trump wins because whenever an elections is a referendum on a candidate, that candidate wins.”

      • taw46 says:

I too would have liked to have heard the mother. My guess is she might have been able to elicit actual sympathy/empathy for the loss of her son as well as all the sons and daughters lost and not turned into her words into nothing more than an obnoxious hate filled and ignorant rant .

Mr Khan is the one who needs to read the constitution because he was way off base. But my guess he would not agree with most of it or the Mom would not have stood there looking frozen with fear like a deer in headlights.

I find the Trump women beautiful, well spoken, strong, well educated and they have had or do have impressive careers.
I do think it reflects badly on Trump that he is married three times and has children with three women, but I am also divorced twice and so I see how it can happen. I wouldn’t marry again if Warren Buffet decided he wanted to marry a chubby, old broad in his own age range and asked me, so I think Trump is pretty optimistic trying marriage for the third time.
